We are determined to Put More Food in the Ground - every day! Even in the heat of the summer, we are planting seeds, seedlings and plants every day with the hope of having a good harvest in the future. Here is an update on what we are doing in Central Florida this time of year.
Bee update adding bee patties and a frame

Pineapple Plantation in the Works

We love to eat fresh pineapple. When we cut up a fresh pineapple at home, we save the top, plant it in a pot until it takes root, and then transplant it in the ground to grow more fruit for us in the future. Today we are transplanting into a new bed at the farm. Can't wait to get those yummy pineapples from our own homestead!

Keep out the 'Possums

'Possums or Raccoons have tried to get into our chicken pens recently. We have placed hardware cloth to keep them from digging under the sides. Also, we found an inexpensive way to clean the chicken waterers in the pen.
Sweet Potatoes are on the way

The Birds and the Bees

Living the Dream

We are considering how blessed we are and how many simple pleasures we enjoy at our homestead. Many of these are things that we take for granted unless we stop to take notice. Perhaps it is good for us to pause to consider what we have been given or the fruits of our labors that we get to enjoy.

    Hello Kevin and Carol, I saw your comment on another video you said you were from central Florida. So I had to sub to your channel since I was born in Lake Wales maybe you aren’t to far from there? We live in Kentucky and maybe you might like to join us on our live on Sunday and we can get to know each other. Your garden looks awesome. I’m hoping to get one out next year but this year just didn’t work out for us. Have a great day, Lisa

      Thanks for watching our video and responding. We actually are right outside of Lake Wales - so right in your old neighborhood, so to speak. Thank you for your kind comments on our garden. We have worked extra hard in the past two weeks to make improvements and are getting things set up for fall planting as soon as we can get more things in the ground in August. We will check out your channel tonight and see if we can set aside time on Sunday to get to know you better.

    Can I grow a plant indoors?

    • @hideawayhomestead3477
      @hideawayhomestead3477 4 місяці тому

      My first thought was "yes" but I double-checked with a search. The Internet agrees with me on this one. I think it would be a good experiment to try in the house as long as you have a large enough space that the spikes wouldn't poke you every time you walked by. It takes at least 2 years to grow a fruit, but it makes a nice green plant and a conversation piece, for sure.

    Ohmygosh, I can't believe I found you again! I used to be Cornflower Blue until a year ago. My phone stopped working, and I could no longer access my info and got locked out of my UA-cam (and everything else 😢). Anyway, long story short, I had to start a new account here on UA-cam. I got mongoose, mongoose are not nocturnal around here, they were going up the ramp right through the automatic chicken door right into the coop to steal eggs, I had to lock chickens up in the coop and run. I don't bother anymore with those plastic waterers, my time is too valuable to be messing around with those things, I have stainless steel automatic animal waterers and peck feeders, I designed and built a easy clean attachment for the water bowl in the run, I clean it in less than 30 seconds. I also designed a full rain harvesting system for my coop with solar pumping system, all water and power is 100% fully sustainable...that's how much I hate watering the chickens 😂

    Another central floridian here, my bees are due in at the end of next week! What do you fuel your smoker with? It seemed to stay lit really well

    • @hideawayhomestead3477
      @hideawayhomestead3477 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for commenting. I have tried several fuels through the years for my smoker. I learned that the goal is "cool smoke" or the bees will become angry or damaged. This time I used hay in the smoker. I have bought pellets before but those were not my favorites. I have also used newspaper or pine needles with good success. I suggest that you experiment several times before you need to use the smoker to get the hang of it. When I first started, it would not stay lit for long enough so I just had to keep trying until I found the good balance with fuel to make smoke - sort of like learning to use a clutch with a standard transmission. You just get to know how it works and then you can follow that process in the future with success. Let us know how you do with your new hives.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, a lot of the problem is the fencing. We think that other causes are that we are not here to care for them twice a day and they don't get enough pasture area to graze on. Hopefully, we can keep them in grass now that two of the larger ones are gone. Sorry that you were sick this month. I hope you are better now. Carol is improving every day and sounds worse than she feels. Take care.

    • @hideawayhomestead3477
      @hideawayhomestead3477 8 місяців тому

      Thank you for your kind comments. We are in Central Florida. The soil in our area is almost all sand so we constantly need to amend it to help our plants to grow. We like to use organic materials whenever possible. We use rabbit manure and chicken manure. We added potting soil this year as well as composted leaves. We added organic fertilizer to some beds. An experienced gardener from our church said that you just have to build your soil in this area because depending on the natural conditions just won't get much food for your table. It is a constant battle because the water just washes the nutrients down into the soil, but over time we have found that we can gradually improve the conditions.

    Moringa trees do very well in are sandy soil. After getting established, they need very little water here. The leaves have a nutty flavor and a supposed to be the "Miracle Tree". I use it in powder form for my arthritis. I have found that chickens love it also!! I often chop and drop the tree I have about two to three times a year to keep the tree low. I have a constant supply of leaves for the chickens. Likewise, I run the branches through my chipper for a nitrogen source for the garden. The whole tree is a valuable resource. It would go really well with the Pigeon pea. If I can remember. I will save some seed pods for you guys on the next cycle. Property looks great !! Thanks for sharing 😍

In some ways, we wish we could keep him but he has a new owner that will take great care of him and can be with him every day instead of the part-time care that we could give. We love the goats, too. They have such fun personalities. But Tootsie is on the naughty list this week because she has figured out how to jump the gate and now escapes regularly. Today will be "re-build a higher gate day!"

    I could use a greenhouse !!! My garden has produced so well under this drought. Then we had the bad wind and rain come last week. The storm laid over so many plants and broke a lot of the tomatoes. The rain of course brought on the blight and powdery mildew.It has been a frustrating couple weeks. A greenhouse is the perfect-controlled environment for Florida, for sure. One thing I would like to mention. Is air flow. I installed a box fan in my 10x12 DIY greenhouse. A couple of years back, and I was amazed with how much more fruit I had on all my plants. The pollination rate doubled, if not tripled. I think a lot of people forget about this process when they use greenhouses. Looking great !!! Thanks for sharing.
