    I dont understand why C1 makes the diode reversed biased.. if you turn on SCR, then isn't it that the diode should conduct immediately?

      because the capacitor holds its charge and the polarity is still as shown at 3:53. There you can see, that the negative side of capacitor is connected to the anode of D3=reverse biased
