I'm confused and would appreciate the Archbishop explaining why the celebrant uses the orans posture during the recitation of the Our Father. The other times this posture is used during Mass is when the priest, as celebrant, offers prayers on behalf of the congregation, instead of prayer with it. During these prayers, the congregation participates through silent interiorization concluded by a vocal "Amen." However, this is not the case as the congregation joins with the celebrant in the recitation of the Our Father.

The “sign of peace” in mass is a total interruption of mass from a Godly thing to a human thing. It takes away from the focus of the mass. I call the “sign of peace” the “Catholic meet & greet”. There was a priest who went straight to the “Lamb of God” an there was no “sign of peace” by humans. We are there to worship God.

The prayer position in which both hands are placed one inside the other does not appear in the Bible. However, there are many passages that testify that people have always prayed with their hands raised. This is the most common and widespread prayer posture in the Bible. So why should we do anything else?

All this is inconsequential and relatively trivial -the minutae of liturgy and ritual deflect Christians from the really crucial need-of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and save souls.

As he mentions, do as is stated in the Roman Missal and add no more. If a Deacon raises their arms and in some cases makes the movements of a musical conductor even, it is to be ignored. Put your hands together in prayer as stated in the Roman Missal.

No requirement how you must hold your hands. No requirement how your feet need to be placed. No requirement how your elbows need to appear. This Priest is simply inserting his beliefs , from silence from actual church teaching. The sacraments are not so legalistic to worry that robotic behavior must be normalized.

Dear Father Bishop. I do not understand why the priest has to wipe his hands with some disinfectant before he distributes the Lord's Holy Body? I disagree with this practice, reason being: when the priest is distributing Holy Communion to the faithful, no infection or bacteria can come anywhere near the priest's hands, for he is holding the Bread of Life. This I truly firmly believe. What is your take, father Bishop?

As I Protestant I really appreciate how this message was communicated. The comments are filled with people who are full of hate, pride and ignorance just as are many Protestant church goers. Christ is not in them. The Archbishop made clear distinction between what is appropriate during corporate rites vs private prayer and worship. As someone investigating why one should convert, it is alarming that so many within the Church do not hold to its beliefs. It is also saddening that such are considered to be in communion with the Church while truly devout servants of Christ are outside of it as Protestants. Who then truly is in communion with Christ?

Why would anyone ponder upon the words of one person? The Reception of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ happens all around the world, and has been done for years. I'm sure that many OTHER trained, learned, informed people have examined it and I'm also sure that if people are doing something that is bad, it would have been stopped, or at least restricted. My Lord and My God is bigger than one person, who may not know what they are talking about, or may just want to discourage me from being closer to God.

Thank you, Archbishop! My guess is that the Missal is the same for the States as in Canada, and sometimes I think maybe I'm out of touch with hands clasped, but kept doing it based on what I saw the Deacon and Alter-boy doing. When my wife is with me on Sunday, we succumbed to the "everyone else is doing it this way", but just explained to her why we shouldn't...we can hold hands going across the parking lot!

These questions don't come up at TLM. The hand holding and forced hand shaking kept me outside of the church for over 30 years. A bunch of 12 to 15 year old brothers and sisters sitting next to each other forced to shake hands week after week as if they are pretending they are meeting someone new is too immeasurably stupid for words. A 14:year old boy who's not man enough yet to greet people in any normal way is not prepared mentally to have some wrinkled old man he's never seen before wants to hold his hand all the sudden. There is no place on earth this is normal or acceptable. Return to tradition where churches are full not empty.

The Orans position, with hands spread open in supplication, the priest does on our behalf. We, the lay faithful, are not expected to to assume the orans position. The only notable exception may be found in the rubrics of the Zaire Rite, the only known example of an inculturation of the Holy Mass in Ordinary Form.

When the lay people started lifting their hands with the priest there was an article in the Western Catholic Reporter addressing this. The answer was that when the priest lifts his hands, arms out - that is called the orans position and only the priest does it - the rest of the lay faithful should fold their hands in a prayerful position. I will smile at people at the sign of peace but I find it very distracting and there are parishioners still shaking hands at the 3rd recitation of "Lamb of God" 5:17

I'm in St. George's Parish of Post Falls, ID in the Diocese of Idaho. In the last 4-5 years we have had 3 different Parochial Vicars and 2 pastors. Our 1st pastor was a local man. He has retired. Our new pastor is from India. Our current Parochial Vicar happens to be his brother. He has applied for his green card and is looking to becoming a U.S. citizen. Our previous Parochial Vicar was also from India. He is now Pastor of St. Ann's in Bonner's Ferry, ID. This is a beautiful church in one of the prettiest towns you could hope to see. Our previous Parochial Vicar was from Tanzania, Africa. He is now in southern Idaho. BTW, he pronounced it Tan-zan-ya. He could see Mount Kilimanjaro from his home. All 3 have been very receptive to learning the American pronunciation of words. All 3 pronounced coheirs as co hairs. Trying to explain how to pronounce words with "ow" in them is a decided problem. Try snow and brown just for starters.

The rubrics in the Sacramentary, the forms and instructions from the Holy See for the governance of this most essential prayer that is for all of us, are meant as instructions for the presiding priest. There are not even any instructions that are specifically directed to the concelebrating priests, only for the presiding priest to inform him what sections are permissible for a concelebrate to say. That being the case, the rubrics never foresee instructions for, nor are they developed for the laity but only for the celebrant. To use the rubrics in the Sacramentary as a guide for what the laity should or shouldn’t do is, in my understanding, a misuse of a tool the Church provides. Cardinal Arinze’s advice to the Bishop was solid, but it was advice to him as a priest and about an instrument used for communal worship that is meant to guide his actions, not those of the laity.
