Excited that you are in the home stretch of the expanse. Those last three books are just so good. Also still super impressed by how nice those home made books are.
15:03 this appears to be a reprint as they modified the last panel of Sunderland’s feet to make it look like he was kicking and struggling as he was being suffocated by having Swamp Thing pressing his face into his vegetable mass. The original issue just had his feet dangling. I also find it rather apt that the artist had Sunderland constantly smoking so we see his breath would exhale out of his nostrils and mouth , The profile of Sunderland at 3:44 with his eyes narrowed and smoke coming out of his orifices is a stark contrast and bit of foreshadowing later on when we get a close up of him with his nose and mouth covered shut and his eyes bulging out as he struggled to breathe.
@@PungiFungi this is the original printing, I just double checked the copyright page and the cover price is right. I just pulled out the modern tpb and it looks like they removed the kicking which is weird, but when I check the Absolute Swamp Thing the kicking is still in there. Good call on the smoke!
@@anotherbooktubechannel oh, that was there originally, it appears they removed it in the Saga of the Swamp Thing Book 1 compilation. So it was the other way around. I first noticed when I saw the black and white reprint which retained it and thought...that was weird. But it did looked like it was added in later.
@@PungiFungi Yeah I'm a little surprised they took it out of the collected volume, I hadn't even noticed it until you mentioned it. Hate when publishers mess with originals!
I am playing catch-up on my BT viewing so only just got around to watching this... Dude, this is awesome! Stellar work, my friend. Loved seeing the whole process of how you went about making it. Those end papers look fantastic, as does the dust jacket. The best thing about this video though is seeing your own excitement for what you've made! I love that feeling, it's why I make art. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to with future projects! 😀👍
@@alex_unabridged thank you man!
Great Haul! I still need to pick up Darcy Coates. I want to read everything by Robert McCammon but Wolf's Hour definitely sounds very intriguing, sort of a horror/ action/WW2 hybrid. There is a movie Persepolis, have you seen it? I was very disappointed with Dolly by Susan Hill but have heard that The Woman In Black is excellent. I enjoyed the movie The Talented Mr Ripley. I look forward to presenting my Ed McBain collection one day.
I was not aware there was a Persepolis movie, that's interesting. I'm currently reading Talented Mr Ripley and I love it
Got this book because of the glowing reviews but feel baffled. I just don’t find it compelling or interesting. I’m 1/3 of the way through and have had to force myself to read every page. I find it really average and boring, so I started searching for different reviews to see if there is something I am missing. Thank you for helping me to articulate why this novel doesn’t work for me. I think I am going to stop reading it now, without fear that I am missing out.
This makes me very happy because this was exactly my intention: to give people permission to say "this book isn't for me" and know that the problem isn't with them.
I agree with your views here! Sometimes the movie is better than the book. And I’ll die on that hill 😂😂😂!
Absolutely!
I am already a big Kirby fan, so I’m a little bit favorable to anything he has done. But I enjoyed his interpretation of the 2001 movie and gave me a bigger appreciation of the movie. But I recommend the ten issues of the comic book series from the mid 70s it shows Kirby’s imagination in the science fiction genre
Yes I really do need to read that whole series. I wish they would reprint it I'm sure it's a rights nightmare
Thanks for posting, Nick! Need to hunt this one down! Huge fan of Kyle Baker, Charles Burns, Brian Bolland, and the rest. I agree, accents in dialog boxes are distracting, that and when a writer tries to write slang for teenage characters.
Yeah this was a fun, random find. Glad you liked it!
No book can be bad as this. Glad someone agrees with me
I didn't like the book much, either!
Agreed!! Although I did enjoy the book. The movie was better.
Strange that he used more black when he had to ink it and used less black when he could use a digital fill. Could Amazon print on demand have a different charge if you use more ink?
Absolutely adore the movie, never read the book. 😀Based on your review, I'll give the book a skip. The movie is just so gorgeous, nothing can compare.
I read it so you don't have to! Treat yourself to the movie again instead 🙂
@@anotherbooktubechannel Absolutely! You have made me want to re-watch that beautiful movie! 😃
I feel the same way. I’ve read it twice and on the second read, I came out kinda hating it! The movie is such a delight it’s hard to top it for sure.
I honestly couldn't imagine reading it again. Especially since the movie is right there!
@@anotherbooktubechannel I reread it for a book club I think so wanted to join in the conversation be used it had been a while since I read it. Safe to say I’ll never read it again 😆
Oh man totally forgot about the stuff that happens with Lan and Matt in this book. I had this ranked at 6th out of 15
That's pretty high up there, though if I recall your Favorite WoT Moments video you had Nynaeve's big moment at the top of your list so that makes sense
Thanks for the great review, Nick. Having just finished A Crown of Swords myself, I agree with your comments. I really didn't enjoy Mat's experience with Tylin, and especially the other women's reactions. Poor Mat. The lack of forward momentum bothered me a bit. I did find that a lot of side stories seemed unnecessary. I find it strange that so little happens throughout the book but then the climactic battles are often very quick and seem almost accidental, sudden, with little buildup -- except Dumai's Well. Though I've not yet made it to the slog, I can feel that this book is kind of sloggy. It's slog-adjacent. Anyway, enjoying your WoT reviews. Disappointed in myself that you've already caught up to me in your reread. I really got to speed it up (though the slog won't help). Now more than ever, it's time to get back to reading!
Thanks for sharing! I see what you mean about the climaxes sometimes feeling like they come out of nowhere. There's a lot of "quiet" in the series so when the violence happens, it is jarring
Mister Miracle started off good and got really bad later on.
Great video! I love your breakdown of this story. I always thought that Speedy's death was supposed to be ambiguous. Like, maybe it's suicide, maybe the other gang finally caught him, maybe it's Blanca's relatives/friends, maybe it was some unknown person he pissed off in the past...
It definitely could be any of those things! I just felt so strongly that in that moment of silence where he stares off towards the emergency room that he comes to a decision in that moment and makes a conscious choice to end the cycle that he's been perpetuating. Do you know if Jaime ever confirms it as suicide in later issues?
@@anotherbooktubechannel Not when they were doing the original run of the book. However, I know they've started L&R over in recent years and the characters are now middle aged. I'm not aware if they've addressed Speedy's Death in the newer issues.
@@anotherbooktubechannel Not in the original run of the book. However, they've revived L&R in recent years and the characters are now middle aged. I'm not aware if they're addressed Speedy's Death in the newer issues.
Thanks for posting. The Death of Speedy is one of the best stories in the series. Agreed, focusing more on characters instead of the sci-fi elements made the series more engrossing. Always enjoyed the artwork, reminded me of an adult version of Archie comics.
Yes definite Archie vibes
@@anotherbooktubechannel Just curious. Are you planning on reviewing Demon by Jason Shiga? Finished Vol. 1, and thought it was interesting.
@@novasite7795 I am unfamiliar with that series. I'll have to look into it
Really love his art. Can tell he has a lot of fun doing SC. Having said and appreciating that, imo it's an example of how 99% of artists should collab w/writers- otherwise they're mainly amusing themselves, the only exception of soloists being rare cases like Frank Miller. Eh, I just wish he would collab with Miller again more like... Great stuff but yeah
Great taste in underrated comics, and coverage of somehow Fletch and WoT... subbed!
I offer a very eclectic mix here lol thank you!
It was an amazing book it’s definitely worth going back for another read.
I grew up reading R.L. Stine except I didn't realize it until I was an adult. I used to get his Jovial Bob Stine humour books through Scholastic and it wasn't until I grew up that I realized he was also the Goosebumps guy.
Yes he started out in humor for Scholastic, I believe he wrote for a magazine called Bananas. I read somewhere that humor was his real passion but he kinda stumbled into horror because the response was so strong
@@anotherbooktubechannel I think he edited Bananas at some point. I would sometimes get second hand copies or Mad, Cracked and Bananas from cousins and my feeling at the time was that Mad was the best, Cracked was weak sauce and Bananas was for kids (I mean, littler kids than me.) But I loved How to be Funny and Don't Stand in the Soup.
It looks great! What a great idea. You will start off a trend of doing this, for sure.
Thank you! I would love to see other booktubers get into this hobby. It's so much fun
This series was on my pull list. I enjoyed the swerve. I like being surprised by the comics I read. Too many are boring and predictable.
Unfortunately very true
Wow, RL Stine, what a blast from the past! My sister and I loved his Fear Street series and used to read those books one after another when we were in our teens. I can remember my younger brothers really loving Goodebumps as well. Wasn’t there a TV show called goosebumps based on the books too? I never knew he wrote these horror comics, how awesome. The illustrations, colors and layout look amazing. Cool to see the artistic differences between the different illustrators. Really enjoyed this review! :-)
There was indeed a Goosebumps TV show in the 90s that I LIVED on. Absolutely loved that show. Fun fact: a young Ryan Gosling stars in the episode Say Cheese and Die. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I was also obsessed with "From Below"!!! 🌊
I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as me!
I've only read My Heart is a Chainsaw, but your review aligns pretty closely with my thoughts about that first book. On paper, I should have easily loved reading it, and I admired Jones's ambition, but many of the shocking reveals felt unearned and I was never convinced of Jade as a character. I didn't dislike her, but she never felt genuine to me. And since the entire book is told from her perspective I had a hard time being swept away by the story.
Yeah I've got a review up of Chainsaw which says most of the same stuff. This book just doubles down on all that stuff I didn't like
They're not for Soy-Boys.
Excellent job with the video. I just started collecting Constantine comics and am hoping g to get my hands on a swamp thing #37 someday.
Thank you! Swamp Thing 37 was the first "key" comic I ever added to my collection
Great review. Read the whole series, loved it, but HATED the father. Just wanted him to get it in the end.
Great review. Read the whole series, loved it, but HATED the father. Just wanted him to get it in the end.
The father was definitely not very sympathetic. How many different ways can this guy mess up in only 3 issues? smh
I think what I liked the least was the conclusion to Dee’s plot. That just did not satisfy me, especially because she was at least somewhat right about what happened to Lulu.
10:24 You fail to recognize Blondie??? She and Dagwood are in picture three as victims of the Joker toxin, right there. Comic strip started in 1930, she and Dagwood married in 1933 and is STILL running.
Ooooh yeah it makes sense I didn't recognize it. I would always skip Blondie when I was a kid reading the funnies 😅
Congrats on 1k!! 🎉
Thank you!
I had to re-read the last half of the book, like 3 times and I still don’t get it… it’s like a rushed fever dream…there’s no real point, I liked the inner monologues but the chaos and is it supernatural? Is it another human killer? I got lost and checked out, couldn’t connect to THIS book! I loved the first two
Glad I'm not the only one!
garbage
I wasn’t aware of this comic (and I love this creative duo). Thanks for talking about it! Also great binding and that picture window is perfect!
Thank you! Yeah it's an interesting, underrated project by them, overshadowed by the heavy hitters for sure
Last year i played the re mastered Crash and Spyro games and they were amazing. I actually event spent the time to 100% all three of the spyro games. One of my favorite games from when I was a kid. Looking forward to our chat we will make it happen at some point lol. Now that you've hit 1k that appearance fee is nothing
I never played the Spyro games with the exception of this demo version that came with (I believe) Crash Bandicoot Warped. I did have fun with that demo lol But I did what you did, played the remastered Crash games and 100%'ed them all. It was NOT EASY getting all the gems in Crashes 1 and 2.
And that's why i love it!
Awesome! Great to hear all the responses. You really were a natural on our live chat. 😀It was great to learn more about your passions and interests. You have great taste in music. I need to read House Of Leaves, just concerned about the time investment.
Thanks Cliff!
Well done. Nice to get to know you better.
Thank you!
Wonderful video! 🙂
Thank you!
Still a good month even with the slump! I am still super jealous of the book binding. I think its super cool. Book 7 of the expanse is when the series moved in the another gear for me.
I just finished Perspolis Rising and holy cow you're not kidding. What a ballsy direction to take the story! It was excellent.
Excellent
I read this book when I was in high school. I loved it. Don't know how I would feel about it now. Back in that day McCammon was one of my favorite authors.
McCammon is great, I've been discovering his works now and have been consistently impressed
Sounds interesting. I can listen to it with my Everand subscription so I added it to my list.
Nice, enjoy!
Thank you 🥰
