Приєднався 14 кві 2023
Hello, and welcome to Why You Should Play! Why You Should Play is a podcast series dedicated to enthusiastic evangelism as a counter to toxic divisive discourse.
WYSP isn't about highlighting obvious critical and commercial smash hits. It's about games that flew under the radar - the ones you may have dismissed or disregarded due to the genre, developer, publisher or even geographical region. From aRPGs to Visual Novels, the United States to Japan, Indie to AAA - each guest and I will do detailed dives into why these are games where you must dispense with your preconceived notions - and the reasons why you should play them.

As we fast approach PlayStation's 30th Anniversary, it was time to reunite with my friend, the awesome @realradec. Together, we gush about Puppeteer: one of the most uniquely imaginative pieces of the publisher's history - from the sadly now defunct Japan Studio. We discuss how it perfectly marries Japanese folklore and British sensibilities, while also elevating the traditional 2D platformer g...
Why You Should Play: Episode 13 - Transistor
Переглядів 1768 місяців тому
As we approach its 10th anniversary, my guest and I discuss the aspects of Transistor that have made it age like a fine wine: it's gorgeous character and environmental art design - as well as its dynamic, versatile and supremely satisfying combat - all contained within a world that has suffered an apocalyptic event but never succumbs to the usual drab and dour trappings of many others in the ge...

It was my immense honor, privilege, and blessing to be joined by MrMattyPlays to gush about the often far too maligned brilliance of Knights Of The Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. We discuss how it complements its predecessor in the locations it visits and even revisits, the themes it grappl...

It's been an eventful year in the games industry. From the many great releases to some that were not so great, all amidst a slew of layoffs, closures, leaks and hacks. Taking a step back: I wanted to do something in the spirit of the podcast. This video serves to highlight a collection of games which released this past year that my friends and I felt needed more attention in the only way we kne...

Why You Should Play: Episode 9 - Signalis
Переглядів 90Рік тому
For the season of horror, I decided to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of the release of the mesmerizing modern masterpiece of survival horror that is Signalis. My guests and I discuss why this game is so much more than just an amazing amalgamation of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, how it not only pulls from the best of those two revered franchises but stands on its own to be something truly t...
Why You Should Play: Episode 8 - The Messenger
Переглядів 94Рік тому
In another celebration of the release of Sabotage Studios' Sea Of Stars, we went back to their debut effort: The Messenger. My guest and I discuss how this complete package of a game - the gameplay, the art, the music, the writing - and, yes, even the story - produce something I consider one of the best gaming experiences I've had in the past few years. Furthermore, this sensational debut effor...
Why You Should Play: Episode 7 - The Last Guardian (feat. Dustin Furman of Last Stand Media)
Переглядів 208Рік тому
I decided it was mandatory that I do the other bookend game of the Ueda / Team Ico trilogy and - for this somewhat divisive but extraordinary work of interactive art - I was blessed enough to have on one of its biggest fans. Dustin Furman (Executive Producer of Last Stand Media) joins me to discuss why The Last Guardian - like its astonishing and iconic creation Trico - can be somewhat frustrat...
Why You Should Play: Episode 6 - Ico (feat. RealRadec)
Переглядів 64Рік тому
On this episode: I brought on the mercurial talent known as @realradec to discuss Ico, the first game from Team Ico led by auteur Fumito Ueda. We discuss how the limits of the PS2 hardware and its minimalist art style did not stop Ico from being ahead of its time to influence many of today's prominent developers due to its brilliant design of a single interconnected 3D space that still holds up...
Why You Should Play: Episode 5 - Chrono Trigger
Переглядів 86Рік тому
With the release of Sabotage Studios' Sea Of Stars looming, it was appropriate to look back upon what inspired it: Chrono Trigger. To have a discussion about such a pinnacle of JRPGs it required multiple guests, so I brought on 2 of the co-hosts of the wonderful @backlogbrainrot podcast to talk about why this game is so beloved, why it was so revolutionary, and - no - it really doesn't need a r...
Why You Should Play: Episode 4 - Vanquish (feat. Ben Smith of Last Stand Media)
Переглядів 43Рік тому
For this episode full of delicious cheese and cigarettes I was honored to be joined by Ben Smith, Associate Editor of Last Stand Media. We gush about why Vanquish is an over-the-top high-octane - but mostly overlooked - sparkling gem of a third-person shooter. It serves as a reminder of the times when video games didn't overstay their welcome, why PlatinumGames is so revered, and why Shinji Mik...

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would get so much enjoyment out of a pair of games involving a immature idiotic sociopath of a protagonist wielding a variety of ripoff lightsabers who performs a myriad of whacky side jobs, all oftentimes involving varying degrees of horny. Also you should do all of this while utilizing motion controls (did I mention this game is horny?) Thankfully I ha...

There are no "dog dads" and "dog mums". There are only PET OWNERS. Don't try to substitute having actual children with something incredibly shallow and ridiculous when compared. Cool vid aside from that part.

My thoughts on ICO being remade are conflicted. I worry that if it is remade it will be forced to have huge swaths of additional content to both justify the effort and entice gamers who are already familiar with the title. And new content isn’t bad, it just depends on how it’s implemented. If I cannot access the original ICO experience within the remake, it will feel empty. If the castle is unnaturally lengthened in the standard playthrough, it will alter the view of the game’s structure and it may unbalance the entire experience. For this reason, it may have to function like The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe Edition, where after experiencing the original game as intended, new content is unlockable via a clearly distinguished access path at the start of a second playthrough (no need to add HUD elements, this could be as simple as interacting with a faintly glowing, broken totem that wasn’t there before). In short, I think all additions they want to make should remain in the New Game Plus. If they are to add anything at all. I also think making ICO into an art film requires a different narrative, the reason ICO remains effective is because you are the one holding Yorda’s hand through the controller. If you just watch two people run through beautiful environments for 45 minutes, you’ll feel none of that same impact. A film would have to focus less on puzzles and combat, and more on silent interactions between the characters. It needs to focus on aspects that can only be shown by a predetermined visual medium, just as the game focuses on aspects that can only be felt in an interactive medium.
Greatly appreciate your thoughts, and thanks so much for listening!
Another great episode, keep it up !
Couldn't agree more. I'd rather play 10 games that through their artistry and design choices left some kind of impression on me... Than play 1000 more polished games; so polished in fact they become 'frictionless experiences' which often translates to 'design by committee'. It really did feel like interacting with a living breathing animal at times, and while some sections were unnecessarily annoying and betrayed the artificial pre-programmed Trico was designed to follow... I have no doubt that what we saw with Trico is but a pioneering glimpses of the types of experiences the incoming revolution in game AI will serve up.
Great conversation! Throwin my hat in the ring, keep me in mind if you ever plan on discussing ghost of Tsushima or halo 😉
I watched someone play No More Heroes… that counts right?
Great podcast!
I probably won't ever play these games because of the switch... But furi, bought that!

Sean should try The Pathless
