Montana Pheasant Tail Nymph - Stillwater and Reservoir Nymphs - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Here we have a great pattern to be used on Stillwater and Reservoirs.
Black and Green has always been a fantastic colour combination to use, and many great patterns over the years have been tied around this. The Montana Nymph is one of those, so this Pheasant Tail Nymph has been loosely based on that pattern.
A great nymph to be fished as part of a washing line, or straight lined.
I hope you enjoy, and get a few tied up in the box.
Material List:
Hook: Barbless Wet Fly (10/12)
Tail: Black Pheasant Tail (Chuck n Duck)
Rib: Green Wire (0.2mm)
Body: Black Pheasant Tail (Chuck n Duck)
Thorax: Lime Ice Dubbing (Chuck n Duck)
Thorax Cover: Black Pheasant Tail (Chuck n Duck)

Foam Post Duo Klinkhammer - Dry Flies - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Рік тому
My take on a Klinkhammer pattern developed more for to use in the Duo method. With a hi-viz foam post, sighting the fly on the river is made much more easy. It also helps aid the fly in floating when fishing faster sections of the river. Finally a mono tag is tied at the rear of the fly to easily attach a length of tippet to fish a nymph bellow. I tie these in a range of colours including; blac...

Euro Jig Streamer - Streamer and Lure - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Переглядів 454Рік тому
My take on a Euro Jig Streamer. This pattern has all the keys components to make it super effective when out on the water. This can also be tied on a size 10 or 8 and used for Stillwater and Reservoir fishing. When used as a Euro Jig Streamer you can drop it into likely looking drifts and holes to tempt any resident trout. Takes can be savage and they are a great pattern to carry year round, be...
Pink Tag Frenchie Pheasant Tail Nymph - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Переглядів 296Рік тому
We’re back! So it may have been a while since my last upload, but here we are, back behind the vice making a tutorial for a Pink Tag Frenchie. This pattern is an absolute magnet for targeting Grayling during the Autumn and Winter months. Tied in a 12 with a 4mm tungsten bead make it a great point fly, or smaller options for a dropper fly. Don’t forget to experiment with the tail options and the...
Small Stream Tributary Wild Brown Trout - Fishing With John Murphy
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
Welcome to the first of my fly fishing videos. After being inspired by a number of good friends to get this done, here it is! Filmed on my IPhone 14 Pro and DJI Mini 2. I still have plenty to learn, but I had good fun creating this. Hopefully you enjoy watching. Small stream fishing for small wild brown trout is something I find highly addictive. The ability to outwit a small wild fish doesn’t ...

Hi-Viz Griffiths’s Gnat - Dry Flies - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
Here is my little spin on the famous Griffith’s Gnat Dry Fly. A must for any angler, this pattern produces fish time and time again. When fish are feeding on small Gnats they can’t resist these. The Hi-Viz post helps track the fly on the water, whist the thread rib offers a little more durability. I find having a hackle a little longer allows the fly to skate on the surface with a more natural ...
Orange Tag CDC Nymph (Hare & Squirrel) - Jig Nymph - Fly Tying With John Murphy
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
The perfect jig nymph to bring a trout or two into the net. This fairly simple patterns has all that’s needed to attract trout. A bright tag, movement from the CDC and a natural blend of dubbing with a little flash thanks to the UV blend. Personally I fish these in 14’s and 16’s the majority of the time. However a 12 with 4mm Tungsten can help in a high river. Give them a tie, get a few in your...
Black and Olive Bugger XXL Jig Streamer - Streamer - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Переглядів 211Рік тому
This is my go to streamer pattern for catching trout within the river systems. It has everything you could need from a streamer; weight, movement and flash. If you only carry a single streamer in your fly box then I strongly advise that this is the one. Fished upstream and stripped back down, swung down and across or dropped into deep pockets and jigged back will all result in savage takes. Tie...
Opal Tag CDC Emerger - Emerger- Fly Tying with John Murphy

My personal favourite when it comes to fishing an emerger on the rivers. The Opal Tag Emerger. Over the years I’ve changed the dressing to the one I’m sharing with you now. I’ve changed the dubbing blends, along with a variety of different tags. This is the variety that I personally have had the most success with and hopefully you will too. Tied in 14-18 Material List: Hook: Dry Fly (14-18) Thr...
The March Brown Spider - Spider/Soft Hackle - Fly Tying with John Murphy
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
In this video we look at the tying of the March Brown Spider. A patterns that’s definitely accounted for a few fish over the years. A fantastic pattern that can be used year round becoming even more effective early season as the Trout start to feed on the hatching March Brown Nymphs. The Spider helps to imitate the nymph as it makes it’s way to the surface to hatch out. I would strongly urge yo...

Could you use 8lb mono equally well?

    • @John.RobertFlyFishing
      @John.RobertFlyFishing 2 місяці тому

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes 8lb would be fine. I used 10lb as it’s just slightly stiffer when adding and removing your section of tippet for the nymph.

Crickey, a lot of materials and a complicated tie, but a great idea and it gives me some really good options for other flies such as a suspended FAB

Wondering what weight nymph do you find your 4mm foam post will hold up.Do you find the foam floats better than polypropylene posts.Cheers

Sorry for the delay in responding. Typically I use lighter nymphs under the due method. So around the 3 - 3.5mm is comfortable. If I need to go any heavier then I will use an indicator. 👍🏻

Great fly, really good quality video which isn’t always present in these videos. One suggestion would be to try to suppress the tool noise after each step. Perhaps use a padded mat or towel. It makes listening much easier especially if you’re wearing a headset!! 👍

I personally would opt for more of a baitfish style pattern for use in the sea. Also check that the hook you use is saltwater proof as it will cause corrosion of the hook 👍🏻
