    My wife and I were there. We were season ticket holders and I played NEOASA (northeast oklahoma amateur soccer assoc.) first division. Too bad people do not think Tulsa could support a major league franchise. The support was here!

    I was working concessions at Skelly Stadium during the time the NASL was active, got to see a lot of free games. I was so disappointed when the league disbanded.

    That's my grandfather. The man in the white shirt at the beginning is my father. He introduced me to soccer, and now I play with him always in my mind. I was at his side when he was very sick. He was a great manager. Love you grandpa lemon.

    Of course, MLS has a business plan that now demands construction of soccer specific stadiums. Tulsa very nearly got a league owned team to play at Skelly Stadium (now Chapman Stadium) in MLS for 1996, but the pro soccer people and the TU people got into a squabble about converting the field to grass... TU agreed to convert to grass ONLY if the soccer people would pay for it ($1mil at the time). They didn't come up with the money, and TU installed spartanturf instead.

    Thanks for your comments. Our new NPSL team has introduced a former Roughneck at almost all of our home games. We had over 3200 attendance for our opening day game. Last week attendance for our NPSL game against Liverpool Warriors of Dallas drew over 3,700.

    Don't know if Fattaman will reply soon... but, it really is hilarious in hindsight. 6 pts for a win, up to 3 pts for each goal scored, no ties, "shootouts" rather than PK's... 35 yard line offsides, most teams played on astroturf, aging international stars, American and Canadian players in supporting roles, most teams used North Americans as goalkeepers because it meant they didn't have to have another clumsy American on the field, lol... great memories... glad

    @rays130226 Your arguments don't make any sense. Gen adidas isn't much and the NASL didn't need designated players rules since there was no cap, and the players were paid enough already. The same can't be said of the MLS. Also, the MLS isn't beating the NHL, not even close. I'm an MLS fan don't get me wrong, but the quality of soccer compared to the old NASL is not even close. The old NASL was one the best leagues in the world back in the day. The MLS isn't even top twenty.

    • @sirkat344
      @sirkat344 3 роки тому

      I agree about quality of play. Played as it SHOULD be. Today, all it is , is Am. Football light. Hell, they pull guys down w/o even trying for the ball. In my day, that'd be a red card post haste.

    Howard Balson always called Skelly Stadium "the House of Horrors," more times than not in disgust. He later served as the English language public address announcer for the Chicago Fire when they played home matches at Soldier Field. His usual broadcast partner for Sting games on radio was Kenny Stern, the son of the franchise owner. As for Roy Leonard, he was the perfect cure for insomnia. Yep, that dull.

    I have a VCR tape of this broadcast! The entire broadcast from the TV Truck that was sitting at the bottom of the Skelly Stadium Press box. You can listen to Jim Carvellas and Shamus Mallon? sp ? during the commercial breaks as they were inserting the commercials in NY. Cameras are doing zooms and pans during the break. Had a friend in the truck. Don't know if anyone would ever be interested but if they are, they can email me at joe.riddle@cox.net

    @vidlivs Actually, the NASL's glory years came right after one of the "Big 3 in NY" retired and Chinaglia didn't retire until after 1983 when the end was nigh anyway. There's so much more to the demise of the NASL than that.
