i think that edgy is the result of not taking a dark/gory history with the seriusness nedded (to serius or lack of seriusness), for example if you tell me "character x killed y with a machete then laught and licked the blood of the machete" (goofy, is like he does it any thursday and is an exageration) is not the same as "character x killed y with a machete, cleaned his machete, gave a pray and leaved" (the action actually matter) , context matters but if you are goin in a narrative and then add some exageration then another exageration you just overcooked your story is goin to end being cringe and edgy, if for example "character x killed y with a machete, cleaned his machete, sayd a one liner, then leaved" (this one depends on the one liner but it can be just on point to be treated as serius as case 2 or TOO serius/goofy to be like case 1) edit: english is not my first lenguage and im too tired to correct any incorrect text C:

It’s all about substance, which makes the word ‘edgy’ fit perfectly. There’s very little substance to the literal edge of something, but further in like with your examples of Berserk and Spawn, you can find some genuine substance, some reason for the edginess beyond just shock value.

The Punisher (MCU) is what would be a good example of dark, but not edgy. Frank has a reason to be violent and kill people because his enemies are either pieces of shit or wronged him in the past. Dark is writing with a purpose while edgy has no purpose, tries too hard to appear “mature”, or does it just because.

I personally think the base game for doom eternal is a good example of well executed edgy media. Sure, an unkillable space marine sent to hell that rips demons apart with his bare hands is a little bit dude to "hell yeah brother" his muteness, lore, storytelling, worldbuilding, and the other characters of the game make up for that. Plus the violence in the game makes sense for the story it's trying to tell, and it doesn't just throw dead babies and demon tits in your face.

Lucifer - the romantic comedy drama TV show about the Devil solving crimes alongside an LA detective - presented us with one of the most terrifying depictions of Hell I've seen, where you have to relive your worst guilt, forever. No fire or brimstone, just cold, endless corridors of trapped souls.

Calling this chapter lazy is very insulting to people who have been working on this chapter for almost 2 years. And coming from a guy who uses ai for their thumbnail, and sometimes for their artwork, heck, you even acknowledge the fact there were some heart and passion put into this chapter. I wouldn't be even surprised in the slightest that you will go on a rate saying you hate chapter 4 when it comes out.

okay so basically Dark is mental stuff and edgy is physical stuff, got it.

The biggest ways I tend to determine whether something is dark or edgy is the classic "why?" question. Say something incredibly messed up happens. Did it happen for a reason? Did it add depth to a character or help to further the plot or raise the stakes in an impactful way? Would the story be detracted from if that moment was removed? If the answers to those questions are a resounding no, then I consider it edgy. There's a big difference between something dark happening for a reason and something dark happening just for the sake of being dark in my opinion.

Stories can be dark and mature, ridiculously edgy and totally own it and sometimes even both at once and all be good, but the problem is when a story is just edgy but acts like it's dark and mature at which point it basically comes off as pretentious

Honestly, I like the idea of a horrific, visceral (i.e. gory hell with tortured humans everywhere) hell. Just... not in the way you showed off. Wayne Barlowe's artwork may be more tasteful in this regard, and while they do depict a visceral hell, it is not stuff like vagina apples and cement made from dead babies (though souls are used as a building material). As hell is generally accepted to be a place in several religions where the worst people go, what horrors might they encounter? How far can the human mind go in devising a fucked up fate for horrible people beyond death for all eternity?
