Are "tell" and "say" also transitive verbs?
A transitive verb is a verb that must take an object (noun) after it. There are two types of objects: direct and indirect. A direct object is a noun or noun phrase that receives the action of a verb. Some special transitive verbs can use indirect objects as well as direct objects. These verbs are called ditransitive verbs. “Tell” is a ditransitive verb. “Say” is not a ditransitive verb. It is just a regular transitive verb. So, we can say “I told him,” but we cannot say “I said him.”
