Ed Soph Stick Technique Lesson Part 3 of 3 - Traditional Grip - Modified Moeller
Part 3 of Ed Soph's video lesson on Stick Technique. Originally posted on the EVANS' Drumheads official channel @EvansDrumheadsOfficial but missing from there for several years. I asked Evans to re-publish it long ago but with no results. Fortunately, I had downloaded it when it was originally posted, so we can now share it again. 😉

HDD, SSD, and NVMe Transfer Speeds on the Mac Pro 5,1

A comparison of the different transfer rates available on the Apple Mac Pro 5,1 using USB, FireWire, SATA, and PCIe interfaces. The HDDs I used were backup drives with plenty of free space. The SSDs were brand new, APSF formatted, TRIM enabled, and completely empty. A few incorrect words here and there, but the results speak for themselves... 🤦♂️ 😉 1000 thanks to Greg Grant for letting me use ...

Very good examples! Thanks for making the video!
Thank you for watching, @glendicky!

What a wonderful project, fantastic that you brought these two spiritual figures together! :)
This is amazing! I hope you're both well :))x
Floater (1962) was written by composer Carla Bley. Paul Bley championed her music, as did Steve Swallow.
Ok. Came back with my high quality, openback headphones... Yes... Really, really good! Thank you! 😎👍
Thank you, Spencer!
I really do need to come back with my best headphones!
Great information, I still hear a vertical axis, the vocal doesn't sound front and center, more above.
I like to think that kind of flattens the sound into a straight line of sound front of you. It's very cool!
Thank you for your comment, Luciano.
Great informative video! I very much appreciate the time and effort that you put into your explanation and demonstration. I agree with you concerning the "Mix Engineer, Lifelike" preset, it's my favorite as well. Do have any advice or insight regarding gain matching? I have Ozone 11 inserted as the last plug-in before CanOpener. Ozone's Maximizer/Limiter is set to -0.6 db, but when I engage CanOpener, the level drops to about -2.2 db. (with Safe Gain selected). When Safe Gain is deselected, the level goes into the red to approx. 2.5 db. I realize I'll be turning CanOpener off when I get ready to bounce, but it would certainly help me to make better mixing decisions if there was some way to gain match. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom with us!
Thank you very much for your comment. Unfortunately, I do not use Ozone's Maximizer so I can't help you with that. Cheers!
Very fascinating!
thank you! 🙏
one example at 27:50; when you switch to off in the same woodwinds' phrase, the output goes instantly from -30dB to -35dB. 5 dB difference is too much to have an unbiased opinion. You may like to remake the video with a gain match plugin after the can opener.
great comment! I didn't notice it. I'll try a new test later on. Thank you!
Thank you for allowing time for us to listen with you and for calling "out" and "in" during the plugin demo.
thank you G.O. I'm glad to help out. I will try to get some time to produce some more videos.
The interesting thing would occur if you have a fast usb 3.2 card attached to multiple external ssd’s and then process streams in a Mac . But what application will use such streams?
Frans, for 4x SSDs it's best to use the bigger (and more costly) Allegro Pro with four controllers. Still, the speed for each USB will be around 750MB/sec, not more than that. This kind of speed can be OK for not too complex photo or audio work, but for video it would probably stutter. Logically, everything depends on the material, your workflow, etc.
Very interesting.
Hi, do you render all your mixed/mastered song with the can opener enabled on your master bus? Or you just turn it off when you render a song or project? Thank you!
thank you for your question! We can say that CanOpener Studio is a "device" to listen to your mixes on headphones, getting a more realistic soundstage, as you would do listening through loudspeakers. So, it's just a device to be placed at the very end of mixing/mastering plug-ins ONLY to tweak your headphones' limitations. When your work is completed, before bouncing your mix to the final master file, YOU SHOULD TURN OFF CanOpener Studio, so that its "tweak" does not influence the correct sound you have already created. In any case, let's remember that we should always check our mixes on a variety of sound systems, with speakers, and with headphones, in mono, and in stereo. Only in this way we can reach a "golden middle path" where our music sounds best in most possible situations. I hope this helps answer your question. Thank you again for asking! 😉
@@massimodemajo thank you so much for your reply. Happy new year!
Super video, I'm trialling it now
Thank you, Ashley! I'll be interested to know what you think. Cheers!
Have you tried Sienna Rooms by Acustica audio? It's very good. The basic version is free.
No, I haven't. I'll check it out. Thanks.
Using Lycom DT-130 card you can get ~ 2200 MB/sec write & 2800 MB/sec read transfer rates.
that's correct when you set the two NVMe units in RAID 0. Thank you for the comment!
Great vid, your passion for sound to sound right is clear and present. I will come back to this when I'm lost or confused.
Hi Paul, thank you for your nice comment! I'm glad you enjoyed it and understood my passion. Thank you also for subscribing. I don't post often, but I'll have some new content soon. Cheers!
Thank you for the video! Strangely enough, I have two pairs of headphones - Sony MDR V700 and Marshall Major black edition. On Sony, the Can Opener works perfectly. As soon as you switch it on, I hear the sound stage and can locate the instruments and the singers. But on Marshall the effect is opposite. I feel the space without Can Opener and get absolutely confused as soon as you switch it on. So I guess, it really depends on the headphones. Thanks for the video, it's been very helpful!
thank you for your comment! Interesting insight about using different headphones.
great!
Good approach from you. You could surely make another video for youtube junkies, saying: 'it makes headphone imaging sound similar to real space stereo imaging, this is my favorite preset, you can find a better explanation on my real video' : ) peace, good vibes and seaguls
thank you very much, dovas90. I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊

Probably feels better to play than it does to listen to
It depends on what you're accustomed to listening to. Just like abstract art: a painting by Pollock can be seen as random splashes of colour, or as a moving masterpiece. I can only suggest slowly working your way from where you are right now through more complex music. You'll see. Cheers.
Thank you! Sound great!!
