The story of the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 "Disco Volante" flying saucer.
The story of the Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 "Disco Volante" flying saucer.
The flying saucer might not seem like a very flattering nickname for a car. But if you just take the Italian name, it looks completely different. In the case of the extraordinary Alfa Romeo Disco Volante, it is actually an honorary title.
Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 “Disco Volante” is the full name for this charismatic car. But as it is with nicknames, they are used more often than all the official names.
The story of the flying saucer begins in 1952. Alfa development manager Orazio Satta Puliga and designer Carlo Chiti were commissioned to develop a racing car for the sports car class, using the Alfa Romeo 1900 as the basis for the new car. Together with Carrozzeria Touring they created one of the most exciting and wildest models in the history of the Italian brand.

Sadly, this gorgeous 1955 Lincoln Indianapolis was only a pawn America was crazy for concept cars in the 1950s. There were fins, bubble canopies, turbine engines, wild space-age shapes, and acres of chrome, and that’s just from General Motors. On the other side of the Atlantic, the Italians were putting out futuristic concepts as well, and some independent coachbuilders put American platforms u...

All wrong
Too fast mate it is not a horse race. Caterham pronounced Kay---ter--ham a small town in Surrey close to the Kent border.
Interested in the car but not interested in worthless AI commentary.
The woman on the thumbnail is in wrong place man💀
Trust me...I saw this car in 1962 and the pronunciation (back then) was Die DEE uh...not Did-e-uh
I still have both my GTX s 440 car and a J Code car.
very well said,, thank you ,, i was 24 in 79 my wife was expecting our first daughter ,, in canada this car was $24000 plus 8 percent tax ,,wow ,, i remember we drove into the parking lot the cs had the grills in white protective tape so nice but we did drive a 75 dove grey mark iv red velour int i purchased new i was 20
They were modest for what was in the 1970's
Owned a ‘76 tricked-out notchback and a ‘77 fastback. 2 of the absolute BEST cars I’ve ever owned…and I’ve owned a LOT of cars over the last 4 decades!
Man, i see in some video that this car are unreliable, because how advanced it was. And unfortunately, a lot of modern car also suffers the same faith as every Vector supercar 🥲
Man, both Onyx and Oxia were Peugeot's only true supercar, and both were just a concept :/
“The COUNT-ache”
Move along. Karma farmer. Took a full two minutes before they even showed a photo of an Econoline. Nothing interesting to see here... although I had never before heard about the weight under the truck "bead". I wonder if it's like the one under the truck bed?
To those reading my comment in 2100, has that concept worked?
I think it’s all been said but…. Slow down, take care in the pronunciations and it would be a very informative video. BTW the pictures do not align with the history once you start talking about the Caterham era. Most of the pictures are historic prototypes.
the shape of the future...it looked to be a better wedge shape than the 1st generation Lotus Esprit in the 70s...
24 (vingt quatre) heures DU MANS or, simply... Le Mans... never Lumans... But yes, the 917K is one of the greatest undying icons of motorsport
This commentary is giving me CTE
Best mustang ever ❤️
The AI is appalling
So little effort. Script was heavily padded. Terrible text to speech narration with bad editing.
Trust me...I saw this car in 1962 and the pronunciation (back then) was Die DEE uh...not Did-e-uh
I love my white collector series, all original w/ 32,000 mi
If this car would have come to life we would have Nuka cola for sure haha. Damn i love the look of this car
That was all over the place😮
Please slow.down. i had to wtach this an 0.75 speed. Also there is an ER in CatERham.
Thumb down for the pathetic AI voice.
It's got Two carborRATors also!🤣
Dear god. ‘Alpha Roe-me-oh’. PAAAAHHHH-leeeeeze make a minimal commitment to self respect.
🎉SS609558992002W789899🎉
why do i even bother............ it's pronounced Romayo
Hello, AI Narrator, Cars cannot accelerate sideways.
Wow an actual human speaker instead of a robot! Thank you.
I just want to see how the people catcher works.
It probably didn't!!!
@@Marc816 Maybe, I think the front end needs to be a little lower to work in all cases. If you were facing the car it would hit you in the shins and maybe drag you under it but if your back was too it I think it might work.
This car was probably the first and only car he designed. It is remarkably innovative, with lots of features never considered before. Volvo usually gets credit for inventing seats belts.
I want one!
OMG ... that monstrosity is absolutely hideous ! What's Wrong with some people ?
The inventor of it, Father Alfred Juliano, had good intentions, but he knew nothing about automotive design.
... Yet , in some ways it's very intriguing
I'd have liked more focus on the car and less on visual production tricks...
A I voice ? To fast repeating information poorly given information
They were utter shit. Bad materials, poor assembly and started rusting on the lot. A dark day of automotive history
I had one and didn't experience any of those issues. I lived in the Rust Belt and had no issue with rust in my Mustang II.
They rusted out so fast
AI would think this car was great...
Garbage
one of the worst cars ever made
STOP cawling a Lotus SIX uh Lotus Seven. AND What the frig is wrong wit yuhs? You ah uh hypah nooyawkuh. Yoo KNOW yoose can't drive one uh deese in Brooklyn~!
I have always loved this car, ever since I saw one as a kid, thought it was the coolest thing ever
Lets be honest this was a 1967 Mustang, and by that time there was nothing innovative about this Mustang. It was not powerful with 320hp. A stout Chevy 327 will put out more than that. With most big block performance cars of that time somewhere close to 400hp. Give one to Shelby and it would have be a different animal. Mustang was always an affordable car, and if you wanted to scare the neighbors you had to spend more. A 396 Camaro or if you knew the right dealer a 427 Camaro would make this Mustang piss its pants. Dodge would give you 320 BHP with a 318, and 425 BHP with a Hemi in the Charger. Step up to the Corvette and you got independent rear suspension and 435HP from a 427 in a fiberglass shell. A car that could hang in there with the Shelby Cobra's on the track, but just could not edge them out. However most people never got to see a real Cobra, as Shelby could not build them like the big factories could. As your just reading the Car and Driver report for your AI voice over, I suspect you were not there to see these cars, as some of us were. Trust me the legend of the Mustang was sales numbers not performance. That's not to say some guys took mustangs to the next level in the garage at home, because they did. Hot Mustangs did not exist, they did, but with added cams, intakes and headers. Heck plaining heads or head swaps to up compression made some real monsters. If you put 400+ hp in a Mustang with the right gears it was quick as hell, but that was not how they came from the Ford Dealers most of the time.
Let’s be honest, it was highly underrated. Same with the 428, and 429. Hell the 351C 4V kicked just as much ass.
390 biggest fricken anchor ever 200 net hp all done by 4200 rpm Garbage
A former buddy had one of these. Same color too. I got an 81 vette, with a blown motor. I built the motor and while I was working on it hickey was always saying how bad he was going to beat me. I spanked that boy hard, then told him he better get his daddy to build him another motor. He tried to lie and say he won but his girlfriend Missy wouldn't let him. He wanted to go on the interstate and go from a 60mph rolling start. That didn't happen as he shotgunnend me going up the entrance ramp to the interstate. I was in front of him before we made it to the interstate. He said he would get me from a red light after that, ironically 2 days later I'm sitting at a red light and hickey pulls up beside me, I busted his ass again. After that he started stealing from me and I didn't want anything else to do with him. Hope you read this Scott.
