ELP were a band a stood up and took notice of in November 1976 when they showed the video for Fanfare on the OGWT when I was 15 years old and knew then that I was venturing into a world of magic.
man that footage from contact and night & day is stunning.
Mr. Massey is the master of Acid House
very interesting, thank you for posting
Good listen, thanks guys!
Living demigod! I didn't know Carl came up with the 5/4 pattern opening and ending The Eruption! Without that meter that movement would not have been as epic sounding as it was. Kudos! I consider Carl's solo in Tank to be one of the greatest solos ever! Why doesn't anybody else even acknowledge that solo?! Great interview. Too short!
תודה טים אתה כזה צנוע.. זמר נשמה מהטובים בעולם❤
Love Tim. He is so modest, but way to self deprecating.❤👏👏
By the way just wanted to say awesome interview my friend my only wish is that you would have quizzed him a little on other drummers of his ilk😮
Carl Palmer was my idol growing up in the early 70s. I'd seen ELP every time they came to St Louis in the 70s as well as numerous times in the decades to follow. To my buddy surprise he actually out drummed Aynsley Dunbar when Journey opened up for them I think it was 1976 or 77😮 my brother Ray and I lived and breathed Carl Palmer from the 1970s to even the present😊 so sorry to hear about his health problems he looks invincible😮😊
Magnificent video. So much valuable information!
I love Mike Moran . What a beautiful friend to our Freddie❤
Legend ❤❤ love smile
Very interesting, thanks for uploading this.
A great evening! But the Q&A was not included?
Hi there. Thanks for the kind words. Apologies for the absence of the Q&A from the evening in this video. We only planned for the Q&A to be a live element so the audio from the audience wasn't captured.
One of the greatest drummers to ever pick up sticks. Master. Legend.
A really great interview..insight to the working man's concerns of the time.Always loved ELP,NICE,KING CRIMSON..I must have seen ELP four times..and King Crimson multiple times..ELP was my to go band back in the day..a tour de force. The Brain Salad tour was phenomenal..quadrophonic sound system clear as a bell.Amazing show.Tocatta was an amazing piece of work alone .It blew a lot of fans minds having never heard these sounds before. As this very time Carl Palmer is recuperating from a heart surgery. He is doing well.Get well soon Carl..you are the best.!!!!!
Thank you for your kind words and insights Michael. They paint a valuable picture from the perspective of someone who was there to witness. Carl is truly remarkable. As were Keith and Greg. We wish Carl well too.
Looks like they left poor Lee in the dark !
Great job to hear Mr Moran speak about his experience. 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Only today discovering this. Loved the relaxed informative exchange, YES I like it! Was certain, tho', all these years had known Barcelona was to play when the '92 Olympics opened. So maybe that had never been discussed in Moran's presence. Evidence it must be true cause remember that's the back story to Freddie telling Montsy he was ill...'want be around for the event' due to the prognosis. Hmmmm
I love Tim, release the Smile.
Legend
Was he asked about the work with Lynsey de Paul?
He said it was to be about Freddie.
Roger sang on 'Time'? Or is Mike possibly getting confused with 'the great pretender'? Either way, Mikes relationship with the other members of Queen i think would be interesting to hear. John Deacon played on 'how can i go on' as well. Then Mike played on Brians 'Back to the light' album and the end of the track 'love token'.
Nice interview. The interviewer should have had his questions together better as he stumbled around. But Mike Moran is a joy to listen to.
Not sure i agree tobe honest. I think by Tony not having the questions written down it allowed for a more natural conversation, and i doubt if it wasn't like this some of the things Mike said wouldn't of been said imo.
Great insight into what is undeservadly a song not given the credit and noted significance it deserves imo. I think in some quarters its given a 'novlety song' tag, probably because there is a 'high camp' factor to the song (Freddie himself said the merging of him and Monserrat was ridiculous really), and whilst its not competing with the great art of The Beatles 'A Day In The Life' or Lenno's 'Imagine', or Bo Rap, it is a first of its type of song, the first merg of contrasting musical style singers and genres. It was some years later that U2/Spice Girls etc collobarated with Pavorotti. As Freddie said in an interview in 89, he'd like to see someone else have a go at this! And when he says that, you can't forget it's not just a male singer singing such a song, its the singer writing it and co-producing it as well! The song really is an incredible and triumphant success in song writing and representing the pop/rock world along with the opera musical sphere. Not an easy thing to do with nothing to compare against, and also especially that in 1987 when Opera/high arts i'm sure would of had a stiff reputation which a pop/rock audience would of laughed at, and the opera/high arts world would of pitied the formulaic simple song writing of the pop/rock music world. Did the Opera section of Virgin records refuse to put it in the opera section (i'm sure i read this at the time or visited a shop where it was catergoried in the 'pop' section), I think the record buying public took to this song because its good song, its also a fun song depending how you listen to it, Queen fans took to it because they were used to Freddie going off on one and not keeping to what he'd done previously. But full credit needs to be given to the recording of the song. 3 people involved , David Richards (producer/engineer) then Freddie and Mike (tho Roger Taylor has laid claim to a tiny part in it. What this is i'd love to know!). Recording this song would of been like nothing Freddie had done before (with the exception of piano ballads Freddie had never recorded a triumphant sounding song without drums before). Dave Richards wouldn't of produced anything like it. So Mike Moran would be the one constructing the music track. And as he says here, he didn't play chords he did each instrument one string/blow at a time. Thats a lot of tracks! But to authentically create an orchestra as convincing as he did at the time (and even now) is just incredible imo. And this is further proven by the actually played/recorded orchestarted version released some years later which just doesn't sound grand enough like the original. Mike Moran take a bow, an incredible acheivement which Freddie couldn't of done without you. To think the initial writing of this song would of been just piano and vocal. Here's hoping for a release of such a version.
This was so interesting! What a fab panel and insightful discussion. Thanks to everyone involved.
Love this
Phil always a Gent...so interesting to hear those insights
An important aspect to the lack of live performing due the Wuhan Virus is that most musicians are loosing the fine touch and condition at executing their instruments because virtuosity is the product of constant practice and responsible live performing which is not the same as just practicing at home playing for yourself which can be boring or unenthusiastic. Live & constant performing is the best way to motivate you to continue to improve your creative power and artistry. Virtual or on line appearances only seem to be a "better than nothing" way to obtain some income without the enhancement and satisfactory pleasure of the response of a live audience. May a real end to the plague come soon or else the quality of music will decay into a plain 'choon tata choon' kind of primitive noise. 😖
GO Hooky🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A Queen tour crate (a yellow one - I forget the code) went on eBay about 5 years ago. It disappeared after a day. I wish I could have won that!
A quick point folks, there was a small error in the second paper, which we would like to mention. As most people will know Brian May is Queen's guitarist (song writer, vocalist, etc...), not drummer, as stated in the presentation. The presenter knew immediately about the slip of the tongue but when things are live, you just have to carry on, ('carry on, as if nothing really matters') ;-D That said, we feel this is an interesting paper, which has already and will continue to promote debate about the meaning of Bohemian Rhapsody.
We would like to thank everyone who took part in and supported this conference and all who watched, or will will watch, and encourage you to look further into the phenomenon of Queen. You may also like to check out 'Smile' and Tim Staffell who also went on to create excellent music www.timstaffell.com, also Phil Hilborne's brilliant guitar related activities www.philhilborne.co.uk, and Brian May's and Simon Bradley's super interesting book 'The Red Special'. Also Arts Council England and CADG for supporting the conference.
For me, it's looks like the passion or the "fire" is no more there for Jimmy. I maybe wrong but not that much. To have this talent is exceptionnel but if you do not practice anymore...it will sound like this...
Shunya on violin worked really well. Nice video, an intriguing glimpse into the world of Toolshed. Great job all!
Bravo 👍👏👏

Glad you enjoyed it
Great contribution, Phil Hilborne- honoured to have shared a stage with you! 😆
Many thanks Paul. 👍🎸
Thank you for your conference. I watched both parts & found it informative, interesting, and lovely to hear.
Glad you enjoyed it!
as a decades long fan, I am excited for this conference.
The first academic paper is brilliant, given that the research was more of an audio-wise perspective. Now the second presentation is something some fans can skip, and there's one discrepancy on Freddie's personality. He was no bisexual. He didn't "come out" back then and personally I think it's better to say he was a queer person. Third presentation focuses more on the different facets of the Bo Rhap film, which was okay.
Very happy already listening to the academic part 1! So interesting!
Very happy in Music City Nashville,TN about this show!
I'd like to thank Tony and Ewa for this great conference. It was all very interesting and I really enjoyed and be honoured to give my small contributions. Best Wishes, Ferdy.
Many thanks Ferdy! It was a great contribution. Thanks to you and your fellow collectors for sharing your valuable insights.
