Free Will Is A Myth But We Need It Anyway
How much free will do we really have? Can we choose not to be angry at the news? To not eat or drink? Can we “choose” how we feel about our boss? Or our spouse?
Show Notes
In this episode we’ll dive into the murky waters of free will-or the lack thereof-through the lens of popular culture, primatology, and psychology. Inspired by the haunting character of Rust Cohle from True Detective, we’ll try to answer whether or not human beings are simply “programmed” by our environments, genetics, and hormones (much like Rust suggests) or whether we have free will in a more biblical sense.
We also discuss the now-famous Sapolsky lectures about free will, and discuss the role of epigenetics, social conditioning, and evolutionary psychology in shaping our “choices.” Along the way, we’ll dissect fascinating studies on willpower and decision-making, from prison release boards deciding inmates' fates based on blood sugar levels, to how holding a warm coffee can influence your opinion of a stranger. Then we delve into how hormones like progesterone may subtly dictate mate preferences-perhaps explaining why some prefer “bad boys” while others go for the artistry David Bowie types.
The episode culminates with the big question: Are we “free agents” in our own lives? Or are we more like tourists in a theme park, picking which roller coaster we want to ride, but ultimately limited to what’s available within the park itself?

Love the references to the psychology studies here. However, I think this woman's psych issues go beyond the basics of human attraction. As stated, she was diagnosed with OCD - but I'd say it's more than that. High achievers also can be higher on the narcissistic spectrum, which could explain her obvious entitlement mindset here. I've known some very intelligent people (in the way of book smarts) who often seem to be very emotionally unintelligent or stunted. Just my personal observations.

Obviously I don't want to bore everyone, but I was one of those kids. Not a hypergenius, thank God. I went to college at 13 and I was asked join the chess club for the institute of Technology that was across from my community College (yes community College isn't Harvard but it's a start;) ) I had several challenges making friends, not because of my personality but because of lack of experiences. I would MUCH rather hang out with older people (and still do) I had to force myself NOT to graduate college before high school so that I was able to play varsity soccer on a very competitive team. My dad and uncle were both Mensa and after the first meeting they never went back lol. So not all geniuses CARE about their IQ. I'd say that's more an insecurity matched with IQ. I struggle with it simply because it's nice when you step out of your shell and slam that card down (as immature as that is) Addiction/Depression is 100%. Thankfully, I was raised a Christian and always kept my brain active , but my brother succumbed :( As a result I now work at an adolescent rehab making garbage pay so that I can help young kids NOT fall into that trap and to help them see their goals/talents. So geniuses don't all make good money. I also know that I personally struggle with insecurities like crazy. When you know all the things you DONT know it's crippling. Making a decision is almost impossible when you are faced with problems that have nuance. I'm constantly trying to find a partner to make choices from my analysis. The WebMD example made me laugh because it's another thing "geniuses" can do. They absorb data like crazy and see all the potential issues. Hence, you become a sort of hypochondriac. You also REALLY annoy medical professionals because they don't want to hear your advice. I married a nurse and she left. Don't ever challenge a medical professional lol. Ok. I'll shut up. Once again my brain is overactive and I felt I'd share. Edit: The women care more about CONFIDENCE and that's why they go for humor. The irony is that many funny people are covering their insecurities with humor. However, the ability to laugh at situations make you look like you are super confident and "above" the situation :)
