How to Buy an Experimental Airplane - Sling TSi
Переглядів 3,1 тис.Рік тому
Do you ever wonder what the process is like buying an Experimental Aircraft? In this video I discuss how we come upon the Sling TSi as the best aircraft for us and talk through what the purchasing process was like. Follow along in future videos to see the build process! If you had to do it over would you have gone with a 916is?
Congratulations 🎉🎊 job well done👏👏👏👏❤ 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
So awesome!! 🎉
Awesome progress!!
Nice build! Why not install the gps antennas on top of the glare shield, under the windscreen? Keeps the drag down and keeps the wires shorter.
We followed Garmin’s instructions for best mounting points. We also got feedback from other builders and Midwest Panel Builders that the airframe will sometimes shadow the antenna and cause signal loss at certain bank angles when they are installed inside. I think the drag from those small antennas is probably minimal.
That is a lot done in a year. Good Job!
I don't understand why anyone designs for sheet and rivet these days instead of composite. It must be so much easier to just make one piece. And carbon fiber can be plenty stiff in just a thin double curved shell with no stringers or frames. Also hard to beat for weight. But it seems Sling is moving to composites.
No more videos been 7 months??
Insurance is as good as the worst pilot of you have partners correct?
Hows it going now? Been a while since a video
Why haven’t you done a video in 2 months
Awesome. I want to tackle this on my own but too nervous. What state are you in?
In CA
Hi guys . Will start following you :) also building a TSI . Take note of that service letter from sling . The centre weights on the elevator can come out , but the weights in the elevator tips have to stay in .
Great progress. Painting the pedal bases black now is a great idea. Keep track of what you can't do due to back ordered items. I did this by putting blue painters tape like a book mark pointing to the page in the kai.
Yep waiting for back ordered parts takes a lot of time. My kits was missing 85 bo parts. Including the dimple die. Luckily I already had a couple that I ordered from aircraft spruce. FYI, it is way faster to just order missing parts from aircraft spruce. You can usually get the part in 2 to 3 days from aircraft spruce.
Looking good! Hold off on those skins, especially in the back, as long as you can. There will be wiring you forgot to run and antennas (antennae?) you need to mount and it is tough to get back there to do it with all the skins on. I am eating with that issue since I got a Quickbuild kit.
Thanks Ed! We’re excited to get the side skins on the center fuselage but not excited about losing easy access.
When you say everything, does that include seat coverings, wiring, plumbing, and avionics? I know with Van's RV-10 you get only the airframe and that's it. Very intrested in the differences.
Kit includes plumbing. We purchased the interior kit from Sling as well. Wiring and avionics is going to come from Midwest Panel Builders. They have a setup specifically for the Sling.
Thank you sir
Your pace is great. Of course if I were actually building I might feel differently but I am just at that feasibility moment.
Dude you are very good at keeping the videos tight now. TY. Which engine did you spec? The 215?
Rotax 915is
Having built a Vans RV6A, I'm really impressed with the wing jigs. Wish Van's had that kind of setup with their kits. Just watched 'Pilot Bambi' having a flight in the TSi with Sling's demo/test pilot, it's such an impressive aircraft!
Thanks for watching! Kit aircraft seem to be making big progress on ease of build. I think the RV-10 had final size holes added to their newest versions. Competition in good for everybody!
There is nothing about “how to buy an experimental plane“ on here 👎🏻
looking good. quick question, did you have to straighten/flute the ribs before installing or were they fine without doing so?
The ribs were formed and fluted out of the box. We made slight adjustments to just a few of the ribs if the didn’t line up perfectly, but they were 99% good.
@@experimentallychallenged3916 awesome. Thanks!
Cruising through! It's funny how fast these parts go, almost doesn't make it worth buying the quick build kit...
I watched the Kit Selection webinar in this year's EAA Homebuilder's Week. Paul Dye actually made that assertion. He said that kits are getting so good that the quick build almost isn't worth it. It's an interesting thought.
@@experimentallychallenged3916 Yup - the only thing you're really buying is time.
Hi! Really good work so far! How many hours do you work in a week?
We work 8 hour days Saturday and Sunday. And then a full 8 hour day every other Friday. 16-24 hours a week in general.
@@experimentallychallenged3916 which equals to 32 - 48 man hours since there are two people working. Plus the "economies of scale" from working together :) I just saw the last 5 months of my life in an 8-minute video
Did you consider alodining at all? Did the distributor have anything to say on the subject?
Yes, we did a lot of research on this topic. Our consensus was that the 6061 aluminum alloy that is used for the Sling TSi is resistant to corrosion (commonly used aluminum boat construction) as it does not use copper in the alloy like the aluminum we're used to seeing on aircraft. Also, we live in a "high-desert" environment that has very low humidity and is not prone to much corrosion. We also asked TAF in Torrance, their recommendation was to not alodine and instead use corrion-x after construction was completed if we wanted to add additional corrosion protection.
I was wondering the same. I guess high desert has some advantages. Alodining looks like a PITA but where I live it is likely a must.
"how to buy AN experimental plane"
Is the 100 hours the combined time that the two of you have put into the kit so far?
That’s 100 hours combined. When we work together we don’t double count the hours.
Cheap labor in South Africa I guess.
Great progress… it goes really quick for a while. :)
In your experience where does the slowdown typically happen? It seems to me like fuselage or fuel tanks is common based on what I’ve seen in other build logs.
@@experimentallychallenged3916 I think it's a gradual hill that gets steeper as things get more complex. I'm a at stage now I look back on the empennage with fondness for how easy things were. The instructions tend to get a little out of order because the order seems to not matter, or it would make sense to do things differently, but that's not how the instructions are put together. I think the trick really is how faithful you are to the plans as published. I've done a number of modifications to my build which is adding to the complexity and there really are no plans for some of the things that I'm doing.
i don't know if you've already mentioned this but have you any experience building a plane?
No previous experience building. Just general owner maintenance on certified aircraft.
Thanks for the video. I’m also building at my house. The commute to work on the plane is great, but the space is tight (1 side of a two car garage) and that slows things down a lot. Still, being able to go out and work on the plane for 5 or 10 minutes when time permits and NOT needing to drive 20 minutes to the airport hangar and 20 minutes back makes it worth it.
I definitely agree with this. I think we’re going to get way more work done because of the close proximity.
So your adventure begins! Great video. I can understand that it's difficult to work and record videos together. But I'd like to say that please keep doing it. We love your videos and we would fortunate witness your journey.
Thanks for the encouraging words. I’ll do my best to keep good videos coming!
Now I'll see kit delivery video :D
Great video. Please keep posting videos of whole building process. People like me are eager to see it. Congratulations!!
If you need more Clecos, you can often get a good deal from eBay from other builders (planes and RVs (the trailers, not just the planes)). Rivnut puller - always set the clutch torque on the drill to less than you think you’ll need. They are a pain to drill out! Ask me how I know…. 😂
Your process to choose the Sling sounds a lot like mine. I’m glad your kit went direct to North America. Mine went via Hamburg (or was it Frankfurt)? I’m in Northern CA, too, and have been working on the QB kit for about a year.😊
Sweet, I'm in susanville too! looking forward to watching your journey.
You’ll have to stop by and take a look sometime. Maybe pull a few rivets!
As I’ve been breaking down my boxes I’ve kept (cut out) some of the logos and named pieces on the boxes for a little post-build project where I can make some framed pieces for the hangar of the stamped pieces.
Funny you say that. My son wants us to cut the logo section out of a box to hang on his wall.
Congrats on your delivery and the beginning of the adventure!
Thanks Aaron! I’ve enjoyed watching your flying videos. They give us some motivation to keep building!
You forgot to mention that MONSTER COMPRESSOR in the background. Geeze - what else is that used for? :) When's the kit arrive?
Haha! That’s my father-in-laws from when he did a lot of work on Jeeps. Kit arrived a few hours after this video was filmed. I’ll have another video up shortly with some footage of the delivery and first day of the build.
@@experimentallychallenged3916 very cool! buckle up - you're in for a ride.
I think I have the same compressor, and while I don't really need the output it's just quieter and runs much less often than the smaller one I had before. My neighbors appreciated it. :)
Very cool! Welcome to the fold. My build is over at firstrivet here on YT. Are you doing the quick build or the flat kit?
Hi! Thanks for the welcome. I'm following your build closely, thanks for the videos you do. I imagine it's going to be a balance between building and producing the video updates. Like you, we are building the flat kit. We also plan on using Midwest Panel Builders for the panel.
I'm looking forward to watching your build. I'm very interested in building a sling myself. It looks like you decided to forgo the build assist options, and I'm curious how you got to that decision. It's an appealing option for me as it saves a lot of money. That said, I've never built an airplane before and I'm not sure I trust myself to do it without assistance. Did that play into your decision?
Cost was a big factor. The extra $30k for the quick build option is not insignificant. Also, there was additional lead time for the quick built parts. So I felt like I would be better off building it all. We plan on doing the bulk of the maintenance ourselves, so there’s a benefit to knowing every rivet.
In the market to purchase in the next year or so....sling tsi too of my list so im glad I found you....definitely following!
Congratulations! I look forward to following your build.
