Students of the Vermeer Quartet have urged them to share some of their “live” concert recordings from 1986-2007.
These include string quartets by Beethoven, Schubert, Bartók, Haydn, Berg, Dvořák, Carter, Wolf, Mendelssohn, Ginastera, Brahms, Ligeti, Mozart, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Kurtág, Bridge, Janáček, Debussy, Bruch, Hindemith, Shostakovich, Puccini, Britten, and Smetana. There are also many works with guest artists.
Not surprisingly, the audio fidelity of some of the CDs and cassettes is limited. And the microphone placement in many concert halls skewed the balance. Still, the Vermeer’s “essence” comes through clearly. Unlike digitally edited commercial CDs whose sonic qualities are artificially enhanced, what’s presented here is unvarnished and real.
Other recordings will be uploaded periodically.

Frank Bridge: Quartet #1 in E minor (1906)
Adagio; Allegro appassionato
Adagio molto (9:58)
Allegretto grazioso (18:45)
Allegro agitato (23:46)
The Vermeer learned this marvelous quartet in the late 1980s at the suggestion of Paul Cropper, the principal violist of the BBC Manchester Philharmonic and the uncle of Peter Cropper, the 1st violinist of the Lindsay Quartet. Paul had admired the Vermeer’s performances of quartets by Benjamin Britten, whose early teacher was Frank Bridge.
Composed in 1906 when Bridge was 27, this work was premiered three years later by the London String Quartet whose violist was Bridge himself. Much of it is brooding and turbulent, though the dark clouds part from time to time - for instance, during the gorgeous second themes of the 1st and 4th movements, and throughout the 3rd movement. (Marc fondly referred to this Allegretto grazioso as “English breakfast music.”)
For years, the Vermeer performed and taught at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in Connecticut. These summer concerts took place in a large, rustic shed that was open on the sides. Unknown to the Vermeer and most of the audience, a listener suffered an apparent heart attack during this Bridge quartet, and paramedics were called. The sound of the ambulance can be heard during the final hushed moments.

best recording of this criminally overlooked piece. thank you for posting

Indeed, a jewel, thanks for discovering and presenting it to the world! Beethoven's tremendous influence is obvious on Czerny's music, he truly was one of his greatest disciples. Unfortunately, his great musical heritage is unknown so far, yet we see that Czerny created his own world and need not rival other composers, only senseless comparison may kill the uniqueness of each.
Cuarteto enorme del gran schubert.
8:50 gets gradually eerie… 👻♒🐸
Great, great!
This recording is a gift, thank you so much!!
Bitte, melde Dich, mal.
What a gorgeous playing! Wonderful for contemplation as well. Thank you for posting this. I am a big fan of the Vermeer recordings. So sad I never watched a live performance of this group. All the best to Mr. Ashkenasi and Mr. Tacke, my violin teacher and my chamber music coach back in 2015-2016, respectively! Best. Tomaz.
The gay man needs to repent.

A truly wonderful performance of this great Smetana quartet! Passionate and sensitive.
Classical music often incorporates imagination and expression of nature. The harmonies meld with the sounds of nature, crafting a musical experience akin to a mystical natural landscape.
überragend

Great performance of a very effective piece. Peter Serkin grasps the motivic and rhythmic elements brilliantly.

Exquisite performance! I was always curious to listen to Mr. A performing alongside Mt. Z. Estupendo! Forever a fan of the “Vermeers” and Mr. Z. Bravo Tutti!
Incredible performance
Each instrument can be heard so clearly at all times.
Beautiful playing. I love Ashkenazy's sound. The only problem with this video is the sycnchronization. The audio track is a little behind the video.
Yeah makes it hard to watch but still a great listen
