Karmina Šilec is an artistic director of Carmina Slovenica and Choregie - new music theatre, conductor and stage director. With her concept “Choregie - vocal theatre or theatere of voices” she has brought freshness and originality to the world of vocal music and theatre. Each new project by Karmina Šilec is an expedition to the field of the unknown and the unexplored. Artistically it parallels different types of music and texts; by merging the old and the contemporary it creates new, exciting contexts in music theatre. Her projects are provocative, daring; her ideas break taboos, both those of the society and music.
As conductor and director she has projects with various companies, opera houses and ensembles worldwide. Her ensembles have performed on stages and festivals of the highest esteem, such as the Ruhrtriennale, Prototype Festival, Festival d'Automne á Paris, Holland festival, Moscow Easter Festival, Dresdner Musikfestspiele, Golden Mask, Melbourne Festival, Operadagen Rotterdam, Steierischer Herbst, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Davies Symphony Hall San Francisco, Teatro Colon and many others.
Karmina Šilec has received ITI - Music Theatre Now award in category Music beyond Opera, International Robert Edler Prize for her exceptional contribution to the world choir movement, Prešeren award; and together with her companies: theatre award Golden Mask and more than 20 other highest international awards.
