Telling you all about my summer internship
I had a wonderful summer in turning at a blindness training center. I discussed my adventures traveling from small town Indiana to a very large city. I talk about my experience seeing the ocean for the first time, and I discussed the freedom of having an experiencing a disability culture.

    I completely understand where you’re coming from. As someone who has no functional vision I’ve faced the same discrimination from potential employers. The work place is not as open to people with disabilities as they claim to be. Especially to people who are blind.

    Great video. Your reading is easy to listen to. Not to be rude. How did you learn to read outloud so smoothly? My Braille reading is slow and choppy.

    I love the Eclipse Soundscapes app. I used the rumble map a lot when I first heard about it. It really is a way for the blind and visually impaired to know what’s going on when it happens. The audio descriptions are nice as well. I am glad to hear another video.

      Tactile drawings? I never even thought of doing that. That’s a neat way to show how it works though.

    Thank you for making these videos! I'm just now finding your channel. I was born with a genetic eye condition called Coloboma which has left me legally blind. I'm always very worried that our mailman or a neighbor or someone will open the gate we have surrounding our front yard and me not see that it's open, then let my dog out. So for now I'm stuck walking the perimeter of our front yard to check the gates to make sure they're both closed. We also have a huge problem with neighbors dogs being continuously loose and, unfortunately, outside of calling animal control there's really nothing we can do. Ours has gotten out once but luckily we walk him around the block and down the streets so much he knows how to get home. He's a 130lb Anatolian Shepherd so he looks very aggressive and his bark sounds that way too but he doesn't even jump and is extremely gentle. He's not a guide dog but he might as well be our child and I'm very worried about something happening to him all the time. My partner. And I put cameras up just a few days ago too. I have to ride an Uber to doctors appointments, pharmacy or anywhere I want to go. Outside of being just blind I also have a chronic pain condition so I can't really walk to bus stops or from where they drop off. I'm aware of government door to door transit that's generally free but I'd rather just pay her $15-20 for Uber to take just me straight to the door of my doctor's office or through the pharmacy drive through for the whole 2 times I leave home without my partner per month. Anyway, your videos are inspiring! I'm interested in healthcare field also and that's what drew me to your channel. I hope all is going well with that. I'll be listening to your other videos soon.

    Dear Gretchen, We are puppy raisers of guide dogs. ❤️ Listening to this interaction makes me very angry. So sorry this happened to you. Back in 2013, I worked with my Senator on the NEW Michigan Service Dog Law. I would like to suggest you contact Client Services where you got Beacon? 😉 They may be able to help give you information on how to deal with these issues.

    Hi. I just wanted to say that I think you are awesome and I love your channel. I feel like I can relate to you so much. I am totally blind myself, and I'm facing a lot of frustration and inaccessibility at school. Like you, I am feeling very discouraged and am wondering if I should continue. I don't expect what I am saying will make you feel better. I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.

      I am glad this video helped you. Leader dogs was the first school that started adding Owen M training to their classes. Right now because of Covid classes are canceled on campus but they are doing in-home training at least for guide dog clients. I believe they are still doing it for orientation and mobility client as well.

    Amazing testimony. Good luck to you and your dog. I look in this school to apply for a guide dog. I live in Hawaii so go be new experience for me. I find your video today and subscribed to your channel. God bless you and much blessings

      Thank you for watching. Having a guide dog is cool but kind of frightening because it is different from using a cane. I know Hawaii has a guide dog school. Since Hawaii is rabies free, (last I heard) the school gets their dogs from other islands. I believe that school is called Eye of the Pacific. Another school is called Guide Dogs of Hawaii. However, guide dogs of Hawaii provide other services as well, so I am not sure how long the wait time would be for a dog. I would certainly recommend Leader, but I don't know how the quarantine would work. I hope you get your dog. Good luck.

      Hi, I hope this was able to help you. I strongly recommend Leader and wish you the best of luck. I am currently getting my first guide dog Beacon, and there are a lot of ups and downs, but having the experience of finally being able to walk with my head up and shoulders back, this is freedom. Wish you the best of luck, and praying you get accepted.

    You know that there was actually a disabled person playing an able-bodied person on Rugrats? She was a total and she had a cane, and she was 14 and her name was Amy. Gretchen also I’ve got one Word of advice. I have been doing this UA-cam thing for a while, and if you don’t specify that you’re actually blind yourself someone on the other end is going to point that out to you. To them you are just a person. It might help you to have your disability in your channel name somewhere. I get half the flack that I used to because I change my name to include my disability and it. Also the only reason why Molly can get away with it is because she lives in an area where UA-camrs are a staple of life.

    One time my senior year of high school I had one of the multi sections and I was in the Walmart parking lot with my mom, and all of a sudden I heard a ping sound, and then I discovered that it was literally coming apart in my hand. Then I tried the graphite like the one you have afterwards, and within two months it did the very same thing at Best diner. Then I got one of those lightweight carbon fiber telescopes, and I have found them to be far better than the ones with the elastic. I didn’t like having to replace my cane every 3 to 6 months and are usually get anywhere from 2 to 4 years out of one of those telescopes.

  • @The_blindpizzaguy1300
    @The_blindpizzaguy1300 5 років тому

    I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with those multi section canes. When I was in middle and high school I used mine so much that within six months they broke. End it got to the point where it was actually becoming a liability for the orientation and mobility department so one day my senior year I walk in and I see this tube laying on the desk, and my teacher said it looks like you’ve got a new cane. I have never went back to the Multi section ones ever since I got that type.
