Quicktip: Finding Your Devices On Your Network
how are the thermals?
Under normal usage (file transcoding, simple 3d modelling etc) I’ve not managed to push it past 80degC and the fan noise is very reasonable at full tilt too.
Loving your work guys… merry Christmas ❤
Thanks so much! Happy Christmas!
I wouldn’t have thought to use Q-SYS in such a way as that, I like it!
It'd be good to see a video on your virtual toolbox tool, i.e what's on your USB stick/ laptop in terms of software. NDI Tools, Companion, Sync-It videos etc.
Love this idea!
Damn!! That sucks! Good pointer!
PT6 looks too good to pass up. Is it battery power only?
It’s bananas for the money right? You can give it 7-24V on a 5.5mm barrel jack. Or 5V on a usb A connector. It’s really flexible!
Wish the MS-A1 kept the PCIE slot of the MS-01
Same! and those thunderbolt ports!
Rich - thanks for the excellent recap. I'm using the ubiquitious Korg NanoKontrol on a ICVFX job with Disguise, and I'd like to get all the button LEDs lit up. I can do this by sending MIDI control messages to the controller - but as far as I can see, there's no MIDI Control Channel layer in Disguise - there's only a MIDI note layer. Is this really not possible? Am I missing something here? Is there another way to send MIDI control messages? TIA
Hey @pphuvf I don't actually know of a way to sent out CC messages. Like you say there's only a midi note layer. Even if you go the expressions route there's only handles to be able to read from midi, not to send it back out. If you were willing to have a computer to sit inbetween then you could run TouchOSC Bridge (hexler.net/touchosc) and send OSC Messages out of Disguise and have them converted to midi? If it was bidirectional control I was looking for, I might abandon midi altogether and just go the OSC route. However I appreciate it's nice to have proper tactile buttons and faders sometimes. Hope that helps, even if its not the answer you were looking for! Put in a feature request to disguise. I can't promise they'll add it but they certainly won't if they don't know people want it!
Would like to know the temps and noise when the car is under load. Any follow up vids planned?
Temps I can definitely do! I think talking about noise levels might be a bit subjective without measurement kit but perhaps we could compare it to other well known bits of kit?
@@hiveschool You could compare hte noise to the CPU cooler by gently stoping one fan, then the other. Maybe the old cooler? Or a standard 120mm fan you have liying around?
I'm also putting one of these in my MS-01 - Just waiting for my cooler to arrive.
You won't regret it. I'm super pleased with mine.
Thanks for putting this review out there. I recently purchased 2 of the EF44 modules and they are amazing. What makes them more amazing than the quality of the build is the fact that you can script any of the controls using Lua script language. The devices can be used from a keyboard (yes - a typing keyboard) customized for a specific purpose/data entry to midi controller as shown here. An example is implementing a pan control on a mixer that doesn't have stereo but you can script the increase in one channel with the decrease on the other and vice-versa. Or using the buttons on the EF-44 as solo/mutes and programming them how you want them to work.
Love this! I haven't got into the Lua programming side of them yet myself but that sounds really interesting and useful!
What kind of KVM switches do you use?
We used the Adderlink Xdips. The only thing that I don't love about them is that they're HD. Otherwise they're rock solid and you can matrix aswell as KVM
I’ve used the Bome Box on a couple of gigs. I like the interface, and the ability to send MIDI over network. I had a moderately complex network setup with multiple VLANs, all down a single fiber run from FOH, and it worked flawlessly MOST of the time. There were a couple of times where the Bome network would lose connection to the servers, but it was very rare and usually got back in line quickly. That also never happened during a show.
Great insight @EviLLeoJ. We've had good experiences with them so far for sure!
Where did you purchase these from? I see them on Aliexpres and Alibaba but no where else.
We bought them direct from Ho-Link www.holinktech.com
Doing this without a neoprene mat of some kind on a table where the screws can fall through the cracks is totally unhinged xD Great work! Would love to see some performance charts and results!
I’ve been building computers most of my life, so it was a calculated risk. But agree that I could definitely follow best practices a bit closer 😂
Impressive. This is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I appreciate the, mostly unedited video. It was nice to see all the fiddly details of how you did this. I might put one together myself. 🙂
I really wasn’t sure if people would watch this as unedited as it is, so thank you for sticking with me and I hope it was useful!
Hello Rich! Nice intuitive build! Take care Your Tennessee friend! 👀👀.
Thanks for watching Dennis! Really hope you're keeping well!
Very cool effect there with the angled, dancing Stormzys!!
Is there a way to generate the deliverable from disguise? I'm looking to create some content but don't know where to start. Our show uses different shaped projection screens, not just rectangular.
Although there are some generative modules in Disguise, I wouldn't call it a content creation tool. I'd look into Adobe After Effects.
need one!
OOHHHH!! Expressions!! I can hardly wait!! I’ve used plenty of very basic expressions, but I know I’m barely scratching the surface.
Perhaps you could start adding some links to these kinds of videos. Maybe even get some referral cash!
@EviLLeoJ we definitely should be doing this. Our focus has been to make the emphasis on sharing knowledge first and foremost but in order for the channel to have a bright future we'll have to start to add in ways to make money from it too. I'm sure viewers would appreciate some suggestions on where to get kit from if they feel like it would help their setup too!
Great video Rich! Many thanks... Dicky.👍
Thanks Dicky, hope you’re well!
Always appreciate you sharing your vast knowledge and experience in these very digestible chunks. 👍🏼
My pleasure!
Such an informative video. I was looking at my Nvidea RTX card the other day and didn’t have a clue what to do with it
Thanks
Thank you very much for answering my question!
Of course!
Wish I could have been on live. I definitely would have asked some questions! I’ll just have to watch it and hope I can gain some new knowledge! Regardless, thank you SO MUCH for the channel and sharing knowledge!
We're going to try and do a livestream once a month going forwards. Hope to see you on the next one!
Decimator, Stream Deck, Leatherman, Video Assist, laptop, mouse, sharpies, hi viz, AJ, allen keys. Bag of tricks such as adapters, cheapy HDMI splitter for HDCP stripping. Prob the thing I used the most is my moleskin notebook for jotting down everyone's names and sketching out schematics! I also would prefer full-sized SDI ports on the Video Assist, but it has been handy to have the adapters in my bag when I've needed them for other things (eg capture cards). Just had a Theatrixx HDMIDA shit its pants and I'm now using my cheap DA off Ebay which was 2% of the price!
Great list there! I definitely should have included my leatherman. Gets used almost every day.
Hard not to agree with this list! I also bring an unmanaged 5-port switch, just in case. It has come in handy. What’s the AJ? I’m sure I’ll palm my head as soon as you reply.

What are the bits of kit you always take to every show?
Cool stuff. Not a lot of notch content on UA-cam. Too bad that the corporate industry I work in never has the interest nor the budget for such things 😢
wow , amazing to see our product here ...thanks
Really impressed with it @MichaelZhang-x2q
I like the 1/4" insert on the side. That's a nice little touch.
Yeah that’s a nice detail!
Curious if that company manufactures for other brands, too. After being burned a few times with inexpensive generic HDMI-fiber converters but also unable to afford Lightware fiber hardware, I recently found a happy medium with Camplex HDMI-fiber converters. I’ve purchased two variants for a total of 7 or 8 sets and have had great success with them. Two weeks ago I was doing a one-off in Jakarta and was surprised to see one of the locals using an identical converter minus the Camplex branding. Meaning that what I previously assumed was an OEM Camplex product might in fact just be a preexisting generic that they’ve sourced to put their logo onto. 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, I've seen that there are often multiple brands sharing a platform when it comes to the cheaper end of the market. My understanding from my discussions with Ho-Link is that they're building these units themselves. We're pretty excited to find a product that seems like it's performing every bit as well as the big names for considerably less investment.
Love the production value of this! Keep up the great work!
Means a lot coming from you! Thank you! 🙏

Hey @danielhsu157 So I didn't appreciate when we were running a comp that there's no easy way to send private messages on youtube. Lesson learned. Maybe you could send me a PM on our new Hive School Discord and we can work out getting your sticker pack over to you. discord.com/invite/5W53PS4WdV
Thank you bro for selflessly sharing your knowledge with us. The amount of time editing and testing them to make it useful.
Hey, really liked the video🙌! I was Wondering if you'd ever be interested in expanding your reach? I could whip up some super catchy short clips from your content, perfect for grabbing attention. They'd be subtle additions but make a big difference. Let me know if that's cool, or if you just wanna chat video content!
I love that your A7X projects can be seen in the recent files list at the start of the video! Shows that Notch is worth learning!
It really is!
Gunslinger def one of my fav A7X songs.
Thank you for this. Drives me crazy that you have to select the next section arrow button for the fade to take effect. Why does it not automatically crossfade when play through sections???
I hear you, but I think that's probably a question for the Disguise devs!
Thank you for creating this channel, there is really not much out there in regards to Notch and Disguise and knowing its somewhat of a niche i really appreciate you guys taking the time and effort to teach!
Our pleasure!
Would absolutely love to see a blog!
Can't wait to see more things coming out from you who are actually touring and coming up with real life tips and tricks to benefit the disguise community
Ha so great to see Richie out here sharing wisdom. My question is, can you get the d3 osc connection to broadcast to the main AND backup?
Glad you enjoyed it! The quick and dirty way is to set your module to a .255 ip address. That will boradcast the message to the whole subnet. The more considered way to do it is to set up multiple modules. One for main and one for backup. Then you can set more than one action per button press. So for example you could have a stop message for main and stop message for backup both fire off the same button.
Fair price point, wish I had more notice to make accommodations from Las Vegas
