First off the title pic is not a hamster, that's a gerbil. Sorry to disappoint but hamsters do NOT make good pets for small children. Contrary to what you might have been told at the pet store, hamsters do not make good starter pets for kids under 10. This is partly because unlike humans, hamsters are nocturnal, which means if your kid wants to play with them during daylight hours, they get woken up and that can lead to aggression. The best small furry I would recommend for kids first pets would be fancy rats. Rats lifespan is slightly longer than that of a hamster, up to four years, and rats can easily be tamed and trained to perform tricks. Rats must be kept in pairs, and if they are handled correctly, rats are very reluctant to bite. Also rats are more active during daylight hours. Rats are also incredibly clean and only usually 'go' in one corner of their cage. Avoid mice because mice are naturally incontinent, which means they're not super kids pets either. Fancy rats are also nothing like their wild counterparts, they do not carry or spread disease.

Received a black GSD as a gift. With DNA testing, the dog proved to be purebred. According to size averages, my dog is longer, bigger, and heavier. Watching her weight is MY job; but, she does love exercise, training, and wrestling. Well-socialized, my dog is well-behaved and just 2.5 years old. -We've got time. . . /grins

My neighbors have a small dog that barks constantly. They don’t even try to make it stop. It seems that they think it’s cute. We’ve tried everything. It doesn’t matter if your outside or not as soon as it gets outside it barks and doesn’t stop.

I have a 3 year old male, he is wonderful, but he is very protective of family and rather than having to train him to defend or guard I've needed to train him to accept my command that I saw the "threat" and have decided all is well. These are not dogs for new or first time owners or those fearful of dogs because they will test you a bit now and then.

I have a black male GSD. I got him at 8 weeks and he just turned 18 months. He is a beautiful dog and gets compliments whenever we are on a walk or go to the pet store. He is 26' high and weighs 92 pounds. He is my 3rd GSD but my first black one. He is very loving and protective. He is also very energetic and oh so intelligent. GSD's are hands down the best dog on the planet.
