No, it doesn’t matter. You can add or remove as many stitches as you’d like to get different sizes :)

One of the reasons blanket yarn works so well for these is because it absorbs quite a bit of water, allowing the ‘balloon’ to keep a lot of water. I’m not sure if velvet yarn would work as well. I’ve never tried it though so I can’t be sure.

I’m sure it would still look great with just SC. You might lose a little big of that textured look, but it would still be cute and work great.
