yeah I think maybe it was he knew he couldn't outrun the gun, and was hoping that a miracle could happen and he could just walk away and the shooter would let him go. The thought of THAT possibility would be the only explanation. Because if he knew the guy was gonna shoot him, he would have at least ran even if he knew it was hopeless
