Urban Ecology Symposium Session Two
The Urban Climate Adaptation Virtual Symposium, a showcase of climate adaptation strategies and partnerships in urban and suburban ecosystems with an emphasis on environmental justice needs and collaborations, was held on April 4, 2024.
The presenters for this session are:
Dr. Georgina Sanchez, a Research Scholar and Faculty Fellow with the Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State University. Georgina’s interdisciplinary approach to research bridges land and climate change science, hydrology, and geospatial analytics to address complex sustainability challenges.
Amanda Carlson, a post-doctoral researcher at the USGS Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center in Lakewood, Colorado. She is a landscape ecologist interested in understanding natural disturbances and interactions between the built and natural environment.
Kathryn Powlen, a Geographer with the Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center. She is a social scientist who studies human-environment interactions often aimed at understanding drivers of land use decisions, water insecurity, and vulnerability to hazards.
Dr. Anne Jefferson, the Robert F. and Genevieve B. Patrick Chair of Watershed Science and Planning in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont. Jefferson is also the Director of the Lake Champlain Sea Grant program and the Vermont Water Resources and Lake Studies Center, Vermont director of the Northeastern States Research Cooperative, and the chair of the Board of Directors for the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc.
Meredith Martin, an assistant professor in the Forestry & Environmental Resources Department at NC State University. She has a PhD and a Masters of Forest Science degree from the Yale School of the Environment. Prior to joining NC State, she was a postdoctoral researcher with The Nature Conservancy focused on tropical restoration.
Stacia Ryder, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Utah State University. She received her PhD in Sociology in 2019 from Colorado State University and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Geography at the University of Exeter from 2019-2023.

California Geological Survey response to landsliding during 2023 - 2024 winter storm season
Переглядів 4421 день тому
From mid November 2023 until late March 2024, sixteen atmospheric river events impacted California, resulting in water year-to-date precipitation accumulations varying from more than 200 to 300% above average across selected areas of the state. Similar to the 2022 - 2023 winter storm season, California experienced historic flooding and multi-modal landslide activity that damaged transportation ...

Of all the volcanic hazards associated with Mount Rainier, large lahars pose the greatest risk to communities downstream of the volcano-more than 90,000 people live in areas that could be impacted by a future large lahar. Most lahars have been associated with eruptions except for the ~1507 A.D. landslide-initiated Electron Mudflow, for which no evidence of an associated eruption has been found....

Lucinda Cole and I retired to the Pitchfork Ranch in southwest New Mexico two decades ago. We’ve overseen 17 government grants to install grade-control structures in 31 side-drainages and the ranches’ 9-mile reach of the 48-mile-long Burro Ciénaga riparian watercourse, 1.5-miles perennial ciénaga. We’ve propagated over 1,000 trees, installed more than 1,000 grade-control structures of various t...

Submarine slope failures associated - 1964 M9.2 Great Alaska Quake in fjords of southcentral Alaska
Переглядів 66Місяць тому
The March 27, 1964, Mw 9.2 Great Alaska Earthquake produced strong ground motions across coastal southcentral Alaska. In the fjords of Prince William Sound (PWS), which overlie the 1964 epicenter and rupture area, intense shaking generated widespread destabilization and failure of submerged fjord sediments. Some of these slope failures in turn generated devastating tsunamis that impacted severa...
Why the trilogy matters: Hydrology, Geomorphology & Ecology
Переглядів 54Місяць тому
It is only in recent years that the restoration profession has begun to recognize the trilogy that links hydrology, geomorphology and ecology. Understanding the fundamental nature of this trilogy is essential to the effective restoration of all streams and wetlands. All three factors must be respected if any project is to be successfully planned, implemented, and the results assessed. This talk...
Think Like a Watershed, Act like a River

After around 150 years of Powell’s watershed map, we are getting there….. Think like watershed with interdependence and connectivity of the uplands-middle lands and lowlands and act like a river being the connector of these interactions from the top to the bottom and vice versa. In this presentation we are going to explore some lessons learned of three bi-national watersheds shared between Mexi...

This project is located in the Juniper Tank Pasture on the Ash Creek Livestock Association.   The objective of this project is to decrease top soil erosion coupled with decreasing excess sedimentation into the San Carlos River, the primary waterbody into which the project watershed drains.  Historically gullies have formed along the hillsides causing deep soil loss.  The implementation of check...
Lessons learned using stream morphology and simple erosion control structures
Переглядів 29Місяць тому
The use of simple erosion control structures, one-rock-dams, rock sills, trincheras, etc have gained great popularity in recent years. Ease of construction, relative cost and effectiveness are driving increased and widespread use. While generally effective, failure rates can be high if hydrology, hydraulics and basic channel morphology are not incorporated into the design of the structures. The...
Hydrological Restoration of Degraded Grasslands in Arid and Semi-Arid Communities
Переглядів 42Місяць тому
We live in the Anthropocene. The entire surface of the earth has been impacted by human activity and our land management decisions. In this context, most of the grasslands in arid and semiarid regions are experiencing severe and continuing degradation. This work describes the changes European culture has made to the landscape of northern Mexico and the Southwest United States and how this has d...
