Back on the 85mm (wide is not for me) - PhotoWalk #09 pt2
HEY, COOL - this was exactly 2 years ago to the day! Happened completely by accident. Wow 731 days go by quickly...
Just as the title suggests, I wasn't really comfortable enough shooting on the 28mm f2.8, so after the morning shoot you witnessed in the last episode, I quickly swapped back to the fantastic 85mm f1.8 SSC and order was restored to the galaxy. Aaaaaaaahhh... 🫣

Shooting Wide Angle (way out of my comfort zone) - PhotoWalk #09 pt1

Starting off day two of our city exploration adventure by shooting some early morning wide angle images. This is part 2 of the first day of exploring Stockholm, armed with the Canon FTb and a roll of Kodak Gold 200. In this episode I even try out some low light photography. With varying results. As you can clearly see if you watched it until the end. But still a very worthwhile watch, if you ask li'l ol' unbiased me... 😁 PART ONE - in case you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/aaU09tMxcYM/v-deo.html BIG...

A while ago (almost two years, in fact) me and Emma went away for a weekend. Not far away, but still... "away", per definition. I brought the Canon FTb-N QL and two lenses; the Canon FD 85mm f1.8 SSC and wider Tokina FD 28mm f2.8. The first one being presented and used in this episode, as well as in part two. But why are you reading this anyway, when you could be watching the video instead? Enj...

Agfa Isolette II: Photo Walk Ep. #4 - my first medium format experience

This may not be a "photo walk" episode per se, but it still falls under the category of me trying out vintage cameras. Being shot in early 2022 before I'd managed to gain some structure in my videos, it's a bit messy and inconsistent, but still worthy of being presented to the world. Mostly because I'm fascinated by the camera and its history. I hope you'll enjoy it regardless.

Hi. Nice video. I have the same Isolette as you, and my only trouble with it is that the viewfinder's so terrible. Could you tell us what type of external viewfinder you're using?
this guy thinks arms length is 1.0m
Haha, well.. the distance between the camera here to my face is approximately 80cm = just under one meter, which I believe are the words I used, no? Appreciate the comment though! Cheers 🍻
What a quiet city
I guess you could grab a rangefinder attachment and try dialling the distance in that way. 😂 Or treat it as a zone focusing camera.
Brunch! 😄
I like your images and I’m inspired by your location. Do what you need to do to support your channel. I’m here for it.
I had such a focusing problem with one of my Jsolettes myself. The focus mechanism on these cameras have 3 parallel threads. You might want to put the camera on a tripod, fix something translucent to the film plane and set a bright object (candle) at a defined distance, e.g. 1.0m or 1.5m. With an open shutter, you will be able to verify if your focus gear is actually properly set. If not (very likely), you can remove the retaining screws, and try the 2 other threads individually. Imagine, the lens focus could be off by 1/3 or 2/3 of a turn. Best of luck!
Regardless of whether you like your photos or not the images are very clean, almost digital in look. It means the quality your film photography is amazingly good. So keep up the good work. You should be feeling very encouraged. I prefer the longer video form but like you say; You Tube wont allow it so do what you have to. Duly subscribed man.
I love watching your stuff, you LEGEND! Your presentation is awesome. Really fun waching these videos, and following your journey. PS. Emma's death metal T-shirts are legit. I personally gravitate towards a 35mm-ish focal length, but have been loving the 85mm too. It is like a new thing for me.
Nice video. You are showing the problems I face today taking analog photos. I come back to the analog world after 25 years and, my god, what a difficult is to take a "decent" photo. I enjoy so much buying old cameras and lenses, repairing them and seen how they shine again, but most of my photos are horrible. If in any moment you are coming to Canary Islands and want to take analog photos in wonderful places, please tell me. Meantime I enjoy so much your videos. Cheers.
Great video, yet again. I like the frequent uploads, even if shorter. I like longer form videos a lot too, but I often have to find moments in my day where I have about 10 or 15 minutes to kill to watch content and for that your shorter videos are great. As someone who shoots thousands of frames a month for work, I think what helps met get great images when I work and not always when I "street shoot", is that I have a goal/ purpose/brief/concept when I set out, but when I shoot for leisure, the images often lack direction. Maybe finding a more narrow theme can help, because you certainly can compose, so it is just working a bit more with the end on mind. My lecturer used to say it is the difference between taking photos vs making photos. Love the content, keep it coming!!
Wow, that's great feedback, thanks man!! I 100% understand what you mean. For me personally, it doesn't get any better than when Jason ( @grainydaysss ) posts one of his mastodon 1hr+ videos. I'd much rather watch them than almost any movie. But then there's the matter of finding the time... That's a very good point about narrowing down and creating some sort of direction or purpose for each shoot. I've heard others used the same expression too; "making photos", but I guess I never really understood the difference. Now I do! Cheers! Always a pleasure reading your comments, a well needed boost. I'll definitely try to keep posting somewhat regularly, although I've fallen a tad behind lately.. there may be a short gap after next weeks episode, but there will definitely be more. Just gotta finish editing them 😁
When I doubt, I take some pictures with my phone, different angles. Then TRIPOD all the time, then landscape or portrait orientation. Result doesnt matter, only the process.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment! Very good input, I'm definitely trying that next time. I don't love (carrying around) tripods, but may try that too.. also, very good point about what's important. I tend to forget that when I get my photos back; I rarely love my work, but I always have a good time shooting. Cheers!
@@qvarfoto my photographs are my teenagers, they have their own life. Later after years I can love them, but Im not really satisfied straight after shooting.
The ICA Smart Supermarket shots and nightshots truly are fun to look at. Well done.
Thanks man, really glad you liked them. I definitely need to practice night shooting more, but this time of year we don't get a lot of darkness around here so will have to wait until fall I suppose.
I AM smart. I needed that. It warrants it's own comment.
You're most welcome, always happy to spread some brain-love. Or something.
FIRST IN THE COMMENTS!!!! LET IT BE KNOWN! I CAN DIE SATISFIED!! ! I will edit my comment as I keep watching.
Hahahaha, this made me chuckle! 😄 First indeed.
Great video, as always! Every city seems to have its round building...here in South Africa Cape Town, Johannesburg + Bloemfontein...each has one! Maybe I need to shoot ours on this side with my 85mm! 7:57 is my fav shot. That 85mm... yum yum... been using mine a bit. Real fun lens. Looking forward to next week.
Ah thanks so much man! 🙏 Yeah now that you mention it, a lot of cities do seem to have their round buildings... hey, crazy idea time: we should do a photo book collab project where we shoot round buildings in random cities on film - covering our respective hemispheres or whatever? or something like that 🤯 Regardless I'd love to see photos of the ones you mentioned in SA at some point. Cheers buddy!
Zenits have this way of getting under your skin. I use EM's and a couple of 12XP's (with the inbuilt light meters) and love them.
Yes I have to agree. I can't really explain it, the ET is probably the less interesting camera in my collection, but every time I open the camera cabinet it's like it's calling to me.. I need to try it out one more time with a different lens I think. Cheers!
Definitely give the 44m-4 a go, I’ve been happy with it. IQ is actually pretty nice and reasonably sharp with some good lighting.
Hey, just found my dad's camera in the attic. Also, for me the focus wasgoing crazy when I pressed the shutter as well, and some googling revealed the post below with this information: "the problem lies with the mirror lift-arm. It rotates forward to lift the mirror, and backwards to let it sit down. When the shutter is wound, it tends to jump forward when it shouldn't." "I wound and clicked the shutter several times and tried to observe what was going on inside. The funny thing is that sometimes the mirror lifts up from its resting position by about 1-2mm when winding! It shouldn't be doing that, and should stay at the downward 45 degree angle until the shutter is clicked and it flips up... That leads to believe that the tension required to flip the mirror is sometimes too great for the mechanism that holds it in place." "...the Mirror lift is a piece of transparent plastic which has degraded significantly." OP apparently fixed this issue with the degraded arm (doesn't mention how), and the camera is functioning for him now. www.thephotoforum.com/threads/troubleshooting-zenit-et.241810/
Yours is much more entertaining than Willem Verbeeck's! Love the wildlife shot 😂 I love to see that you also seem to talk to yourself as you work and shoot. I always apologise to clients beforehand, saying - you will see me talking, but it is to myself. Also - try shooting playgrounds at night...Too eerie. Keep these videos coming. You are punching way above your subscriber count. Just a matter of time.... 🎉
Heyyy man! So sorry for the late reply, been insanely busy and equally exhausted this last fortnight and then some. Really glad I automated the upload process, haha! 😂 Wow that's amazingly high praise, I'm truly humbled. Thank you! Yeah maybe, I never really thought about the talking to myself bits to be honest. Maybe I do. Waiiit - is that why clients are looking at me weird when I'm working and never call me again?? Thanks so much for taking the time, I always appreciate your comments!

TUVM! 🤩
So... which camera did you end up watching the episode through? Let us know 👇😁
😅 R5 with vintage 85mm F1.8 FD.
You 'fency' yourself a punny guy 😂. (Gosh, this attempt at humor is terrible. Puns bring out the worst in me.) 135mm is great. I love mine, and with an Ae-1... lovely. I think is should do more urban stuff with it. You got some really nice shots in this walk and it is giving me some ideas for my own area here. The 135 really does keep things together... but paradoxically is also great for creating seperation. By the way... tell us about the white guitar.... almost looks like a Solar mixed with a Strandberg. Ok... ending the long winded comment. ... Your channel is going to sky rocket. The humor and presentation is awesome.
Hahaa oh that's comedic gold! 😂 They don't call me the pun-isher for nothing, but I may have met my match! 🔥 Cool. so you have the same setup then? AE1 with 135mm? That's awesome. Yeah I'm a real sucker for tight lenses in general, although really trying to appreciate wider angles (or -hrm- learning how to use them) but struggle to make compositions that look half decent. Oh well spotted. Actually it's my own design and build. I used to work in a guitar shop about a decade ago, and a regular had his own guitar workshop. He was also teaching guitar making, so I booked time with him and built that white thing from scratch, with his help (and machinery). Took me a year and a half. Loved every minute of it. It plays amazingly well, sounds great and weighs almost nothing. Hit me up if you're ever visiting Stockholm and you can have a go at it 😃 Again, thanks so much mate, your comments here really means a lot! 🙏 Cheers
"This may or may not be properly exposed" 😂. I often think that. How you run for the composition at 2.40...so familiar! Shots at 7.40 are cool. And you are right. Modern cars are completely photo-unworthy.
Thanks a bunch mate, I love reading your comments - really helps me stay motivated! :) Glad you liked the photos too. At this point I was still pretty "new" to film photography (apart from growing up using them, of course). Slowly catching up, but really having a blast making these videos though. Also saw you recently uploaded another one of yours. Awesome! Gonna watch asap for sure :) Cheers!
😍
It is common on Agfa cameras for the front element threads to freeze up inside the (old dry grease) second element threads. This same bad focus thing happened on my Agfa Billy record 1. What happens is you ar e turning both front elements in the shutter housing instead of just the the first focusing element. I took off the front ring ( 3 tiny screws) unscrewed the two elements from the shutter housing then put some lighter fluid between the two elements. I used a rubber lens cup and flat piece of sticky rubber to unscrew the frozen focusing element. I then rd-collminated the focus at infinity and it focuses now. m.ua-cam.com/video/ATh7t1RJE1c/v-deo.html&pp=ygUUQWdmYSByZWNvcmQgMiByZXBhaXI%3D
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, mate! I really appreciate it. Fantastic help and great link you shared too, I'm definitely going to have a very thorough look at that and try my best to fix my copy. Thanks again! Cheers /Fred
If what you describe (the 2 focus elements stuck together) is qvarfoto's trouble, wouldn't he be finding that he just can't turn his focus ring the whole way? Eg if the elements stuck together with the focus at infinity (presumably how the camera would have been stored) the focus ring would run out of travel about half way round, long before it reached the 1m mark?
The best "leaving your house" description I've ever heard. Should be a melodic death metal song lyric. How late it stays light in Scandinavia is so amazing to us down here in the deep south of Africa! High summer, suns sets at just before 8pm on the West Coast. I really like these images. The foreground trick with the leaves - yes, please and thank you! Depth, deepness, depthicity! The leaves/flower at 9:52 really displays that lens's ability to separate background. Can't wait for my 85mm F1.8 to arrive!
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, there absolutely should be, haha! I know I'd listen to it. Yeah man, especially with daylight savings hey. During midsummer it's light almost until midnight, and Stockholm is not even that far north - in the bottom third in fact. Further up they have 24 hr sunlight which is bonkers. Not a fan myself, as I prefer my evenings dark and warm, but still pretty cool. Thanks so much for watching and commenting man, it means the world hey! Looking forward to your next upload as well. Cheers! 🍻
I love these episodes! If anything, the pics are just "dreamy". Sharp focus is so.... 2023! My Helios 44M is a bit hit and miss wide open as well. A video every 7 days?! I wish. I'm on a 14 days schedule and just about making it... Your subs are gonna grow quickly with that frequency.... And finally - what are the chances? I am getting my Canon FD 85mm 1.8 tomorrrow! ... If the courier delivers on a Saturday... However, mine is the nFD (SSC implied, but not mentioned on the lens). Can't wait to try it out.
Hahaha, well said! 😂 But seriously, thanks so much man, I really, Really appreciate that!! Yes, well.. I've already completed and scheduled the weekly videos until early June, thinking that'd give me enough time to make 10 or so more.. but I'm already falling behind. Frequent uploads are tough, hey! Wow that's a weird coincidence about the 85, and very awesome! Hopefully you'll get great use of it. Looking forward to seeing a video about yours, which I'm guessing is in the pipeline? :) I absolutely love mine. Cheers mate!
The photo with the white artifiacting looks like it could be a light leak in the camera body
That was my initial thought as well, but I don't think I've ever seen light leaks with this much of a pattern and complete lack of color? It's more visible in last weeks video. But I'm certainly no expert in this particular area, so you may absolutely be right. I'll see about replacing the seals and hope for the best. Thanks for commenting!
@@qvarfoto did you check if it's your fingers? I have a Yashica Mat-124 G and my grubby phalanges often find themselves pushing into frame. From the video, it looks like your knuckle or finger may have just peeked in for that vintage 1980s dad-finger effect, present in many family photo albums on our shelves
07:24 "amafiggun the contrast..." - a master of the English language, this guy 😂
1st off - your channel deserves 1000x times the views youbare getting!! Your presentation and storytelling is great! My Zenit TL was so broken, I made a table lamp out of it. The Helios 44M lens I got with it is bokeh-lovrly, but unfortunately seldom sharp. It is only really sharp 2-4m from the subject. So I seldom use it. Great look though. It sucks to have gear 'fail' with film, cuz it is so expensive! I have recently had the biggest film fail... will be posting at some point. Can't wait for your next video! I have a Hanimex 135mm with thqt 2 aperture rings... it is cool for video running and gunning, but not for pics.
Wow thanks so much, that really means a lot!! Especially coming from an experienced fellow UA-cam creator like yourself 🙏 Haha that's certainly on usage scenario worth considering. My Zenit is probably not quite bad enough (yet) but I do have other bodies that would make great desktop accessories. Yeah I know, right! You can almost feel your bank account getting lighter for each shutter cycle.. and when things go wrong it's downright painful! Upside is that it can make for a great story, so eventhough I'm sorry to hear about your recent film fail, I'm really looking forward to seeing what happened in your video about it. Cheers buddy!
Man, getting all cameras I've ever owned (professionally or in the process of becoming a pro)... is a neat project! I'm short a Panasonic G405 point and shoot I started with, I suppose my mom's Kodak Instamatic is something I can add, then a Canon Rebel/300... then I have my first digital, the Canon D60, but buying all the 5Ds 1 0 IV, might prove a bit expensive! LOL. I basically short the Canon Rebel, the Panasonic and Instamtic. The rest I have (old SLRs, TLR).... oh yes, and then my Mamiya 645 PRO TL's.... that'll be expensive to find again... and the 645M and 1000s and J645... gosh... I'm gonna need to win the lottery!
Wow, yeah that's a pretty solid bunch hey. Would love to see them featured on your channel at some point. Also that lottery idea sounds like a plan I may have to copy, haha. Honestly though I'm not sure why the concept is so appealing to me, but I guess I'm just a nostalgic person with a bit of a collectors gene hidden in there somewhere 😅
Oh, and I published a new video the other day. Would love for you to check it out if you're at all interested. Will be uploading weekly from now on. Finally! 🔥
@@qvarfoto already started watching, but got interrupted with work. Will have some time off the afternoo , plan to continue!
So... which photo was your favorite? The blurry one? 😅
How on earth that hasn’t happened to me I have no idea. Never even realised there were two aperture rings until now! Probably because the blades are oily as shit and I never use it.
1:42 forest fairy
Haha yup, that's where I found her in the first place.. 😂
Since it has sentimental value I would think it worth having a good CLA done.
Absolutely, and I've definitely thought about it. But CLA's are pretty costly here where I live, and I have other cameras that I use more often, thus perhaps being more deserving of a CLA currently.. but yes, this one may very well get one before too long. Thanks for watching! Cheers
I also don't know anything about screwing thongs up.
Haha, what?
Most older cameras are marked in feet, not meters.
Valid point, thanks for commenting, but that is not the case here. It clearly says "m" for meters on the dial. And I doubt a European camera made for the European market would have markings in feet - makes no sense. At least not to my knowledge. But I could be wrong I suppose. Either way, I appreciate your input. Cheers /Fredrik
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Sorry the Isolette is not in working order. There must be someone in Sweden who can fix it. I hope by now that has been done and you are enjoying beautiful, medium format photos. If not, what are you waiting for?
Hi, thanks for commenting and sorry for the late reply! Haha yes, good question; what am I waiting for... well, I tend to grab one of my 135 bodies these days, but I do intend to fix the Isolette before too long. Cheers /Fredrik
..if you have a slr-camera, you can adjust the range easily. For that, you loose the small screws in the range-ring (3 VERY little screws) and pull it off, after adjustingt on infinity. Then you open your Isoletts back, and glue with some tape a Hair tensed across the filmplatform. Fixing it now on a tripot, it's easyer. At last, you look through the SLR camera (on infinity) direclty into the objectiv from your Isolette to see the hair on the other side. Screw the isolette-objectiv untill the hair ist sharp.Your Camera is now adjusted on infinity. Apply back the rangering on infinity. Feddisch (means finished on german dialect..). Hi Rainer, apologies for the late reply - and thank you for that very thorough guide on how to fix the focusing issue. I will definitely try it. Much appreciated! Cheers /Fredrik
Technical issues aside the camera's rendering is very pleasing !
Thanks for commenting and yes, I agree. It's a great little camera for sure. Cheers!
THIS CHANNEL IS SO UNDERRATED
Wow, thank you - I really appreciate that! I've been quiet for a little bit, only to batch produce a few months worth of content to be able to keep up with consistency and what not. It may be a few weeks still, but there's a lot more steady uploads coming, starting later this year. Cheers! :)
Love your video haha, i have a afga optima sensor electronic, you should try one someday (0w0)
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I haven't uploaded in a while, but there are a lot more videos in the making. Haven't tried the Optima personally, but will definitely keep an eye out for it. If I find a good deal I'll absolutely get it and include it in a video for sure! Cheers!
Hallå där! I also got the Isolette II and everything is working mechanically. If you fix the focusing, it's a nice little traveling companion. I got an external rangefinder (Voigtländer) for the cold shoe to make focusing easier. Recommended! Also important to open the bellows gently to keep the film plane straight. It's tempting to push the button and have it pop out but that will make it suck out. Also, wind the film the last you do before pressing the shutter is another tip I've heard.
Nämen tjenare, Joakim! Those are some excellent tips, thank you for sharing. I've shot a few more rolls through the Isolette recently, and sadly it's even worse now. The shutter release locks up about half the time and the bellows only opens half way when loaded with film. When the camera is empty both that and the shutter works flawlessly. Very strange. But that makes a lot of sense what you said about opening it up gently to prevent a vacuum, I'll keep that in mind. More videos about it coming up, but I'm currently working on batch recording about three months worth of weekly uploads to give myself a fighting chance at consistency, but nearly done now so... before too long, hopefully. Cheers!
@@qvarfoto Weird with the shutter, sounds like it needs a CLA but then you might as well find a new good working copy for less than the service cost. That's how I got the Isolate II in the first place, my grandpa's Agfa 6x9 had focus and advance problems... found the Isolette for 200 SEK! : ) Lycka till med kameran eller ersättare!
@@joakimpersson9425 Yeah I agree, it's indeed strange. I've considered a CLA but figured I might give it a go myself before I drop it off somewhere. I'm a sucker for fiddling with fine mechanics so what's the worst that can happen, right? Haha! 😂 Getting another camera is an option, but this one holds special value to me so would prefer fixing it. Although 200 SEK is a lot of camera for the money, so well done! Will keep an eye out myself. Tack så mycket! :)
Dennis Workman has an excellent how to video on how to check and reset the focus on the Agfa isolette cameras.
Really? Wow that's great news, thanks for sharing! Gonna check that out right away. I actually gave my Isolette another chance a few weeks ago for the first time since the events in this video and just got the negatives back from the lab. Not gonna lie, I did have a few more issues.. I have a few videos before it in the pipeline, but will share later this year. Cheers
@@qvarfoto Best of luck with your camera, these old gems are definitely not point and shoot which is what attracted me to buying one, I look forward to seeing your next video using the old Agfa.
@@chrisbailey4759 Thanks, I might need it 😅 And yes I totally agree with you there! Glad to hear you want to see more. I have loads of material to edit together into episodes and post here, but I've struggled to find the time. I think I've come up with a good system now though, and hearing that someone wants too see them is a huge inspo kick. More will come, promise. Cheers!
Great video. My Isolette has similar focus issues and I've even taken the focus ring off and recalibrated it. It's great for landscape shots though, and outdoor portraits stopped down. 😅
Thanks Luke, I appreciate that! Interesting about recalibrating the focus ring, how'd you do that - do you need special equipment or just regular tools? Actually I took the camera out again last weekend for the first time since this video was shot. I uh... had some... issues again, haha! This time it was the shutter that locked up. Anyhoo, big cheers!
This video is probably my favourite. Despite the snow. Looking forward to seeing more.
Mine too! Cheers ;)
Tjänare. Hilsen fra Norge!. I am getting an Agfa Isolette and your honest sharing of your experiences was truly interesting. Great to see the camera in use.
Hallå nabo! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I really appreciate it. Hope you have better luck with your Isolette than I have so far. It's an amazing camera and having medium format in such a small package is pretty cool. Ha de!
I will pick up my Isolette II right at my local post office. It will be my first time with medium format as well. Just put one film through a borrowed isolette 1 and maaaaan... I screwed up. 😂 Didnt understand the winding machanism... Just got one foto out of it. Hope i dont have that focussing issues, even though i dont think its sooooo awful. It happens with such an old camera. I think were not just to that anymore... Looking forward to watch other video from you! Greetings from Cologne, Germany!
Ahh haha, yeah the winding mechanism sure messed me up as well before I figured it out. It took me an embarrassingly long time to understand what the little window on the back was for.. 😂 But that's awesome, I hope your experience with it will be none short of amazing, hey. And a huge thanks for watching and commenting, it means a lot! I've been drowning in work lately and haven't had the time to upload for a while, but I have every intention to keep posting regularly before too long. Your comment really helps with inspiration too, so Cheers!
