On this episode of The It's Only Rock And Roll Podcast, we speak with drummer Pete Best, one of only three living men who can rightfully claim the designation “former-Beatle”. We discuss his two year role in the band's development, which took them from teenaged amateur rockers, to road-hardened seasoned musicians - culminating with the band signing with EMI Records, and his infamous firing from the group literally on the eve of their worldwide success. Pete also recounts The Casbah, the teenage live music club his mother started out of the basement of their family home which gave The Beatles their start.

Oh by the way I was 11 when I first heard Grand funk and I was hooked, oh the memories.
I was born in Detroit later moved to Florida in 68 and the first time getting into rock music ironically Grand funk was the first rock band I heard and bought my first album ever after that wooowie I found more awesome bands and concert's every weekend the 70s were the best years ever for music.
Lou Super voice and eyes👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️je l'écoute encore et encore aujourd'hui 👍❤️😘❤️
Great snippet!
Sorry Bo, you were not the draw Elvis was. Although I am almost certain there was a double racial standard when it came to pay and the entertainment industry. But Elvis was a once in a lifetime phenomenon.
Back in the 70s I saw Al with a small band in a bar in Atlanta's Underground. Rock & Roll
Go Bo. I stand with you!
Hi I'm French, born in 55. I remember this band. In some French rock journal, they had written an article about them back in the day, the title ( in French) was: Grand Funk, when Boeings take off 😅 I remember their song We're an American band. 👍
Just to meet up as old friends before it's too late.
$750.00 and Elvis got $5K? 50's in a nutshell!
Mel Schacher and Mark Farner's“Look, none of the guests are there. We'll sneak down from the back and get as close as we can.”About. The concert started at 8 PM.I think some people left early.Five hours is too long to sit in the old, dirty Olympia Stadium. In addition, there were a lot of young kids at the show. There was a curfew, so they had to leave the venue. Three acts, preceded Zeppelin: Lee Michaels, Grand Funk Railroad and the MC5. But no act topped Jimmy Page and the Zeppelin.
But I remember seeing videos of the band in VH1 back in Europe, Portugal
Bo just found out their was a racial problem?
In all of Pete's Post Beatle Anthology Interviews he seems to have accepted his place in Beatle history and is at peace with it.
God bless Bo
According to the pre-performance arrangements, Grand Funk Railroad had to perform and be off stage by ‘midnight’ at 0:00am. Unfortunately, by the time the stage crew had removed the MC5 equipment and the Grand Funk Railroad crew had set up their equipment, it was already 11:30pm. The audience may have wanted to hear more Grand Funk before the power went out, but I don't think it was a case of Zeppelin being blown off stage - I think the GFR members' comments were not directed at the band, just at their manager. If Grant pulled the plug, what has that got to do with Led Zeppelin as a group! In other words, it's not Zeppelin's fault, it's the management's fault, and I feel that these things were unfortunately used as a good sales strategy for GFR after this.
Look who's talking, used to respect Linda specially for her appreciation and love for music. Her work with Gram stands out imo, but she's changed so much now. She's now contradicting her past and is a norm for her to tear down any past legend or musician as if she was so much better. She has no respect for most if not all musician's from the past, well I lost all my respect for you.
Fascinating man!! Lou!!!
Maybe it had to do with that concert they played together at, from what i read in one of the Morrison biographies was that it was a big Simon & Garfunkel crowd with the Doors opening for them and the crowd wasnt into Jim's theatrics at all so maybe Jim just took out his frustration on Paul?
John Densmore is insecure over Jim Morrison.....those are the only stories people care about!!!! Densmore the lame DOOR
MY 10 YEAR OLD SON CAN PLAY THE DRUMS 100 TIMES BETTER AND MUCH MORE TECHNICAL THAN DENSMORE EVER DID.
Weird people try to down play Jim’s voice. He wasn’t a great singer in a traditional sense but at the same time the Doors wouldn’t have been as successful without his touch. The baritone was one of a kind. Perfect “rock” singer
"Racism" is a term that has undergone what I call "definition inflation" to an unfortunate degree
Ahhh the GOOD ole dayz...
My recollection is that Sullivan was notorious for only paying acts the low union scale wage even if they were well known acts. Sullivan's leverage was that acts were willing to accept low pay for the publicity they got by being on the Ed Sullivan Show.
gotta love Al Cooper
playing what;s 'appropriate'-----that's what it's all about
2 Greats!
Farner is just a bad ass rock legend! Imo he WAS Grand Funk!
Kinda hilarious tho.. and so typical Terry Knight, the king prince of bs!
I do recall a dispute between Fleetwood Mac and Blue Oyster Cult back in the 70s about who gets to use Saratoga Performing Arts Center for a concert. MAC won but BOC said Fk U and they ran THEIR concert at the Albany Saratoga Speedway a few miles down the rod. There were cars parked along side route 9 for miles because the speedway didnt have the lot size for that big an audience
Never did care much for Led. When Sabbeth and Grand Funk came along Led seemed for the black light poster incense burning bong suckers.....boreing AF
After all Lou's been through, especially his personal reawakening, I'm sad to hear him so bitter. I thought his faith had been getting the better of him. 😔❤️🔥
It's a shame to deny Grand Funk their spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Parker guitar 🎸. Right on!
Kind of sweet to hear Pete refer to Paul as “Macca”.
I met Allan in a butchers shop in Glasgow 1967, " Butterfly " is a great album
Flint, Michigan's very own, Grand Funk Railroad
Lol reminds me of my first concert. ACDC opening for styx poor styx
A lot of artists hate on Jim Morrison because he surpassed them in so many ways. He's a legend and they're just ordinary.
He didnt wear snake Skin pants they were Leather . And he had more then one pair.
I have to say that I was only recently reading that Sullivan was a champion of black people. And much as I love Bo over Elvis and most other people, which of the two was the obvious moneymaker? It was a business. And is Bo really saying he hadn't been aware of racism before? Come on.
Well he'll grand funk is much better than zeppelin hands down
Rest in peace, Legend.
I'm green...& I'm With Bo.. ‼️..🇦🇺🍻.. it's always the content of the character.. things have changed since the 50 tees..we hope!
To sum up Jim Morrison -- rock legend, Dionysus, sex symbol, poet, shaman, philosopher, wizard, genius, kind, gentle, insightful, knowledgeable, humble and interested in the etheric. But... he was also, a jerk, narcissist, sadist, imbecile, inconsiderate, sociopath, childish, self-destructive, lover of the dark and macabre. Jim Morrison was part Christ and part Satan. It depended on the phase of the Moon, I guess. Of course, we are all that way but Morrison was more so, in both extremes.
My first concert in Lake Charles ,La.1974
My dear friend Howie Casey , such a legend and lovely lovely guy , and I had a honnor to play and tour with him, in Portugal , we called " Wings over Algarve", love the man !!!!
Because they ended up being better than led Zeppelin so led Zeppelin's manager turned the power off on them
In another interview that I heard, M.Farner stated that Led Zeppelins manager, Peter Grant, had the power shut off and demanded that GFR exit the stage. M.F. also said that GFR was "upstaging" Led Zeppelin and GFR watched Led Zeppelins set in the crowd with the fans in a 1/2 empty arena.
I've seen everyone including Grand Funk and Led Zeppelin back in 1971 1972 and believe me Grand Funk was much better😮 they got us hippies back then going nuts😅 Led Zeppelin's Act was okay but highly overrated and the drum solo was absolutely boring😮 as a matter of fact nobody was better than Grand Funk and ELP to see live back in the early 1970s😊
