Color Me Happy Fiber Arts Studio
United States
Приєднався 25 тра 2023
We are a natural dye studio. Our mission is to bring joy to others with naturally dyed fiber and yarn, and to foster creativity, community, and connection to the natural world through this work. We believe that color and creativity are key influencers of our mental and physical health, and that making things with natural materials is one way to ground and connect us to the ecological systems around us in ways that make us both healthy and happy.
We are starting this channel to give back to the UA-cam community that has been an inspiration for our creativity. We started with short videos and are developing more content as we learn this new venue.
Join us for a monthly podcast where we talk about natural dyeing and how we are using our naturally-dyed yarns and fibers. We will also share shorter videos between these podcasts to show behind the scenes in our dye studio and garden, and adventures related to all things fiber arts!

Weld from start to finish ( #naturaldye )
Join us in this Adventures in the Dye Garden where we introduce you to one of the workhorse plants of the dye garden: Weld. We take you through the process from planting seeds to dyeing yarn.
Weld (Reseda luteola): Also known as dyer’s rocket or dyer’s weed, this biennial native of Europe and Western Asia has been used since at least 1,000 BC to color textiles a clear, bright, sunshiney yellow. We use this dye material all the time, to make not only yellows, but a variety of greens as well.
Growing weld is easy (perhaps too easy as it is considered an invasive plant!), but takes a while to mature for its full dye potential. In this video, we take you through an 18-month process in 12 minutes.
As always, we love to hear from you! What questions do you have about natural dyeing or working with naturally dyed fibers? Comment below with questions and suggestions!

How do solar dye kits work? Easy natural dyeing!
Переглядів 768 місяців тому
We make solar dye kits as a fun way to create your own hand-dyed skein of yarn. This is probably one of the easiest ways to step into the world of natural dyeing. We have premordanted the yarn (with alum), so that it is ready to use, and the kits include instructions and a link to a demonstration video (8 minutes, showing 3 different techniques). The owner of a local yarn store asked if we coul...

Beautiful colors!!!
Stranded colorwork is my favorite!
How wonderful is this!!!
Thanks!
Michelle, I believe you were talking about me. I spoke to you at the Bloomington show. I talked to Linda originally.. )I believe it was Greencastle). she told me about your podcast.
Thanks for saying hi! And thanks for watching😊
Fishers! What!!!! I live in Broadripple and have been looking for you, but didn’t know your name! Yeah!!! I’ll look at your prior video and fall in love with dying! 💕 I’ve also been looking for a local group! I don’t get out much, now I have a reason!😊
Hi Neighbor! It will be great to meet you in person. We post our open studio and other events on our website. Hope to see you soon. And, dyeing is so much fun, especially with nature ;)
Please do a tutorial how to do petals and sprinkle ❤
Great idea! We will work on one. Thanks!
Dear Michelle, dear Linda, I love watching your podcasts with my knitting... and then the big surprise! ❤ Thank you so much for naming me with two designs. 🙏 I was really pleased.😄❤ You talk to each other in such a relaxed way, it's easy to understand for me as a German and it's great fun. I would love to knit something with your yarns, but it would be too much of a luxury to fly in extra wool from the USA. 😬 Best regards to you and till next Video, Dani from Nuremberg, Bavaria🤗🧶😘
Thanks, Dani! I am glad you enjoy the show. I love your patterns. I am thinking I should make another Kimono Cardigan for a gift. I wish international shipping could be more affordable 😘 Maybe the next time I am in Europe I could deliver it in person !!
@@ColorMeHappy.Fiberarts Oh, that would be great if we could see each other here... and with wool too! Fantastic. 🤩 Oh how lovely. The kimono as a gift!! Now you can knit it by heart. 😄
What is Linda wearing?
Hi! Thanks for the prompt! We forgot to mention that it is Tanis Lavalee’s Camaro sweater made from our MCN DK weight yarn. If you are on ravelry, you can see her specific project in this link: www.ravelry.com/projects/LindaBird/camaro
See you Saturday in Bloomington!!
So glad you can come!!🎉
Great keep the local wool coming.
@@LindaKarlinsky thanks! We plan to. We have another one at the mill now that is a blend of cormo and Suri alpaca. We cannot wait to see what that one is going to be like.🥰
I particularly like the Just Weave It cowl! ❤❤❤
Linda used some nice colors with this one!
Hello from Germany, it's so nice to see my design so far away. 🧶Congratulations for all the patience to have it translated from German, great!!! 👏Unfortunately I only have a few designs in English, Kimono Cardigan unfortunately not. The wool and colour are beautiful! 🥰And seeing your surroundings and the plants was exciting and beautiful. Best wishes and kisses to you, Dani from Nuremberg
Thanks for watching Dani. Love your designs! Will look for the English ones, but Google translate seemed to work too!
@@ColorMeHappy.Fiberarts 😍🌻❤️
I wish this episode would reach a larger audience. This is interesting and important to understand. Thank you ! ❤❤❤
@@mongrain8934 thank you so much! I’m glad you found this helpful🥰
🌞🌞🌞
Are there any dye plants that self seed? I'm a lazy gardener. 😅
Well, we are in the Indianapolis area and several of our coreopsis and some Japanese indigo appeared to self seed, but we don’t count on it. Goldenrod can be harvested many places. Although marigolds might self seed, they did not in our garden, but they are easy to grow and maintain!
Thank you for this episode. I was not aware of steam dying: very interesting. I love the Exact Opposite cowl, especially with a slow changing color yarn. ❤❤❤
@@mongrain8934 thanks! We use steaming when we hand paint the yarn or fiber. When we are doing a tonal color, we usually use an immersion method in a stockpot. The cowl was fun to knit!
I love Linda's knit bag and Michelle's exact opposite cowl! I started thinking about the microwave and whether it's truly off-brand, because in reality it uses far less energy than a regular streamer. So in that sense, it would be a more sustainable practice. Just a thought.
@@jeanhaley66 that is an excellent point!
theres something lovely about seeing a small buisness fiber mill. Like idk if I was a farmer I would feel happy having a real relationship to my miller.
We totally agree!
Wow that was a fabulous tour!
Thanks! They are a fun group to visit. We love visiting fiber people and learning how they do things.
Thanks Michelle, so fascinating to watch!
So glad you enjoyed it Lindy-Lou!
Beautiful projects! ❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Awesome, as usual. I loved the solar dye demonstration.
Thanks Debbie! That was fun to make, and now we will have blue ones!
Have you considered dyeing the fleece before spinning?
Yes! That is a fun way to put different colors together in your yarn. After scouring the wool and premordanting, I like to dye it in jars so I can make several different colors at the same time.
Happy yarn-aversary!
Thanks Diane!
Thank you for discussing the Pumila, I am just making this now and am so glad to hear your thoughts too. I did think I was losing my logical brain a little when trying to sort this one out:). There aren’t a lot of project notes in Ravelry, but someone did say to stick to the one-repeat chart and then note where the increases need to be, and/or print out the Japanese chart as well. Just at the beginning, we’ll see how it goes! It’s so lovely.
Enjoy the knitting! I do love the final result and would knit this pattern again - such a beautiful design.
Ooooh that copper verdigris is a favorite color of mine- thanks for sharing!
Your knitted projects are beautiful! Thank you for sharing the behind the scene process of analyses for natural hand dying. ❤❤❤
Thanks so much!! we love sharing what we are working on - in the dye studio and on our needles!
Hi Michelle, so enjoy learning about Color me Happy. Relaxing and learning in the evenings. 🥰 Lindy-Lou
Thanks Lindy-Lou! So glad you enjoyed watching!
That's gorgeous!
Thanks so much! Its fun and easy to do, too.
I am curious to learn a little more about the copper as pre (or post) mordant. Bautiful WIPs ! ❤❤❤
Thanks! This is great. Stay tuned for more. We have a series of copper tests coming up.
Cool!
Great video!!👍🏽
Glad you liked it!
Wow! That’s really cool
The clothes are so sexy
I'm knitting a Musselburgh right now. It's almost finished. I love the yarns you dyed - beautiful!
Thanks! I have several of these hats now, and I love them. They are so warm and comfortable and easy knitting! Enjoy the making!
Wow very cool! I love that coppery orange the most.
Thanks. I do love those oranges!!
I think I’m going to try the shawlette and fingerless mitts.❤ I’ve been to Hoof 2 Hanger and they’re very sweet.
Yes they are! Tag us when you do your projects. We would love to see them!
Wow! ❤❤❤ Beautiful colors. Did you use a mordant on the yarn ?
Thanks! We used alum (potassium alum sulfate). Although it may not really need one because of the tannins, we still use mordants for consistency.
I find that the mosaic portion of the Quintet Shawlette is a clever way to transition to the next color. That blue color could be Old Grover 😊. Keep us posted on your embroidery project: it gives me courage to try it someday. The magic of natural dye won't stop to amaze me!
So glad you are enjoying this! We just love learning new things about natural dyes. Almost every time we use them, we learn something new!
I appreciate the tours as well as your natural dyeing.
Thanks!
Lovely! Quelle belle créativité!❤❤❤
Merci beaucoup 😊!
Your beautiful ❤️
Howard Johnson's lol! I really like the peach, purple, green combo!
Working on my Terrazzo Slipover @petiteknit and there are a lot of opportunities for the Italian Bind off. It’s not that complicated once you get into a rhythm. Here’s my self-talk as I go along. Do you have ways you think about it as you go?!?! I am always looking for new ways to do these things.
Graceland in the 1970s! Love it!
Thank you for sharing your dying experiment and projects. Such beautiful colors ! The lace motif of the bandana is less apparent on the purple version, probably because the two different colors create a marled effect, but I like them both. I am presently knitting a dress based on the Mamaki pattern by Nicolor.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I have never knit a dress before. It seems like a daunting undertaking, but such a fun project!
Beautiful store!!!❤❤❤
Great video, you two are so knowledgeable!
Thanks for watching, and for your kind words. We love what we do!
I’d like to hear more about the sources of the yarn bases you used.
Hi. We started with yarns from Wool2Dye4. We work with local mills for some of our bases, and will have a locally grown and spun yarn soon. Stay tuned!
So much ''magic'' happens with the chemistry of the natural dyes. What a surprise to see how the walnuts turned out after 2 years! I was working on my Timepiece Cardigan by Ailbíona McLochlainn while watching your episode.
Ooh, I would love to make another cardigan and will put this on my favorites list. Love the lines, and those pockets!
So interesting !!! ❤❤❤
Thanks -- this was a fun adventure!
