The short film Vanishing Act premiered on May 9, 2023, at the Robin Williams Theater in New York, as part of a Physicians Committee event, with an introduction by Mayor Eric Adams. It was subsequently shown at the American Film Institute in Washington, DC and at screenings in Chicago, Norfolk, and London, UK. It includes music videos from CarbonWorks, plus a comic interlude in the kitchen. 1. Samurai 2. Song for an Angel 3. God Save the King 4. By the Window 5. Un Piatto Semplice 6. Training that Works 7. Athena 8. Nemesis 9. Louder than Words 10. Tout Ira Bien Samurai. This high-speed rocker, with a New Wave-punk feel in 15/8 time, tells of a little girl who wakes up to find a band in her bedroom, and she is empowered to save her animal friends. Song for an Angel. This song was inspired by a chance encounter in the forest with a deer, who froze in place and tried to make herself invisible, looking very vulnerable and bringing to mind how transitory life can be. Martha Roebuck sang it in English for CarbonWorks’ latest album. In this video, Dolche sings it in Italian for CarbonWorks’ earlier album. God Save the King. This powerful video is about betrayal. It makes reference to Kristallnacht-the “night of broken glass” in 1938, when neighbor turned against neighbor in Berlin-leaving shop windows destroyed and many people dead. The video includes archival footage from Germany arming for war in the 1930s, broken up by images of people who have no idea what is to come. As time goes on, we see images of children recruited for a deadly, self-glorified, fascist machine. By the Window. The traditional Vietnamese song, By the Window, tells of a woman waiting for her man to return. Because Vietnamese music uses the same pentatonic scale found in blues and rock, CarbonWorks took the original, which Phi Khanh and Chau Nguyen play, and plugged 110 volts into it. Those familiar with the Verdun album will remember Dream of the Black Horse, which similarly mixed the original Vietnamese song, played faithfully to the original, with Western-style music. In 2009, our song was featured in a Vietnamese ceremony on the National Mall in Washington at the end of the Library of Congress’ commemoration of the struggles of the boat people-refugees who had to flee the incoming invasion as Americans pulled out. It is that final day that we see in this video. Phi Khanh and Chau Nguyen both had to leave Vietnam at the end of the war. Phi Khanh’s family ended up in Kansas City, where they played in bands before settling in California, where she is at the center of the music scene. Phi Khanh owns Bleu, a popular restaurant and nightclub (and you should taste their vegan pho!) Chau Nguyen is a master of Vietnamese instruments. Un Piatto Semplice. Dolche explains the fine art of making polenta. Training that Works. Some years back, Bob Gray stumbled across a brochure featuring “Training that Works” and came up with this wonderful song, reminiscent of Talking Heads’ The Good Thing. It was a staple part of the Pop Maru repertoire. Dave Plunkert, known especially for his striking New Yorker covers, created the video. Athena. Starting with bluesy saxophone, the song wends its way through quiet vocals by Lara Lotz in French with aural images of Athena, the capricious goddess of war and mathematics, who launches mortals into their seemingly meaningless lives of joy and tears. The final lyrics take an optimistic and even triumphant turn, with a tongue-in-cheek rewrite of the Beatitudes. Nemesis. The horseracing images are punctuated by Italian lyrics about Nemesis, who condemns a young Narcissus for his vanity. Louder than Words. The lyrics speak of perceiving the person within, even when the person is not a human being. It was inspired by a terrified little dog who was luckily rescued from a city street and the unexpected bond that resulted. The images include a wide variety of animals, starting with those in trouble and then showing others who are joyful. Notice the tear in the cow’s eye. Yes, cows cry, and in human hands they have reason to. The final scenes are with Koa, a beautiful friend who shows that pigs and children really can run, play, and snuggle on a couch, more or less. Tout Ira Bien. Many children’s songs put creepy images into young minds: “She cut off their tails with a carving knife,” “When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall,” “Jack and Jill went up the hill, and Jack suffered a traumatic brain injury.” Ditto for French songs: The innocent sounding Alouette, gentille alouette, describes to a lark how she will be plucked. This beautiful song provides images that children might actually like. It does not promise that things will be great forever. It simply says, for tonight, everything will be all right. It was recorded in French, sung by Dolche, as well as in English by Martha. Both are on CarbonWorks’ latest album.
Dr. Barnard, I can’t really put my feelings into words but you are a serious force and legend in health, nutrition, animal rights and music. Thank you for all that you do. In addition to loving the music, I really like the post you made that explains the songs and videos. Ps I went to one of the PCRM events and really enjoyed.
Very well done!
Thank you!!

Why is this called "Vanishing Act"? Are you breaking up? Throwing in the towel?
Perhaps it is to reflect on our actions, which is causing the harsh mass extinction of vital native biodiversity.
WOW! but why aren't the friends and family etc. of the band in the comment section?
Not even The weight loss champion. Why not promote this on the PCRM channel?
Such authentic talent and compassionate musicians.
Thank you! Even with the wide variety of songs and images, I'm hoping that the theme of compassion comes through.

Superb track !
🙌🙌
What addictive jazz! You kind of fall into this and want more.
Thank you, Victoria!!
Amazing violin playing and composition made more powerful by suggestive and fascinating animation. In my mind, this piece turns the notion of “good night’s sleep” on its head, raising the specter of the disturbances of dreams, the unconscious, the heavy lifting done during our sleeping hours as our minds try to reframe and retake the day…thought provoking and beautifully crafted, both musically and visually.
Thank you, Bob! I'm still trying to sort out if it has a happy ending.
Good stuff 👍
Powerful! Amazing song and artwork!
Scorching fiddle by Allegra; typically great job by her. Artwork is disturbing, compelling. I love the way the rocks bounced when they struck the ground. A strong ray of hope at the end. I'd love to hear Dave and company explain this one.
Thank you, Billy!

Thank you to Allegra Havens, Jeff Phelps, Mike Stetina, Shea Roebuck, and Brian Stivale for their brilliant performances, to Johnny Terrell for his always amazing audio chemistry, and to Dave Plunkert, Jeremy Galante, and Raven Reyes for their stunning visual artistry. I'm not sure there is a happy ending on this one; let's view it as a call to action.
Call to action indeed!
We are taking everything from vital native biodiversity without the awareness that we are also directly taking from one another. Despite all our ecological destructions, nature still shows acceptance. Carbonworks creates music with humility and purpose.
I love it!
Thank you!!
1:18 Why did you guys make him like Atatürk? :DD

This is a cover of a song by Pop Maru, the early-80s DC band, which Bob Gray was part of, and which I think was never released by PM. When I was in high school in Maryland in the early '80s, I had a cassette of this song, which I listened to a thousand times in the years since. It was on a mix tape that I played at parties in college. I listened to this crazy song so much back then, I still have all the words memorized! Anyway, glad to hear it's finally out there (or still out there), and that it's got such an elaborate video. The whole album is amazingly good.
Steve, thanks for providing that great background. Neal and I formed Pop Maru along with Matt Shelley and Mike Willis. We never did release Training in those days, and we did not include it on our one album. I am humbled to know that you have gotten so much pleasure from it! I discovered the original 4 track master mixdown (that your cassette mix comes from) in my basement in 2019 and thought Neal could transfer it to digital. Once we heard it, we knew it would be great to re-record and treat it right. Thanks again!
Wow! And yes, you are right! Training that Works was a very early Pop Maru song, and when the album came out, this song was not on it! The same was true for Marie Osmole. I guess we thought these pop songs were a bit too light for that industrial-strength album. Well, we're making up for lost time! Glad you liked it!
👍🏼

Lyrics and credits Avec ton casque de guerrière With your helmet of a warrior Ta réticence Your reticence Et tous tes chiffres de pi And all your digits of pi Sans bruit, tu as peu réfléchi Without a sound, and barely a thought T’as jeté la clé dans le puits Down the well you threw the key On ignore tout du temps We knew nothing of time On ne sent pas la pluie We did not feel the rain Sans bruit, on n’a point réfléchi Without a sound, without a thought Ce n’est pas si drôle, cette comédie. It’s not so funny, this comedy Beati mites, beati Blessed are the meek Quoniam ipsi comprehendent ironiam For they shall understand irony Beati misericordes, beati Blessed are the merciful Quia ipsi misericordiam adhibuerunt For they have shown mercy Lara Lotz, vocals Allegra Havens, violin Shea Roebuck, bass Mike Stetina, drums Bobby Read, saxophone Neal Barnard, guitar Words and music by Neal Barnard. Under known and under appreciated.
The contrasts really are so stark, and heartbreaking. But we can be kind to other animals, if we want to <3 thank you so much.
Great song and video! Thanks Doc. Neil and CarbonWorks. 2.3K views and only 2 comments and 8 thumbs up ?

I like it Doc.
Until the animals are free, we will not be free
I'll have the hypnotic bass riff that runs through this piece repeating in my head, just as the expression on the horse's face at the end of the video is seared in my mind's eye. Very impactful.
