Midway Dance Orchestra - Sobbin' Blues - 1923.
this is early fifties, CIA MKUltra band. Bob Matthews is Fats, Flora and Sylvia play piano at same time. Some guy comes in to see 'Fats' and yells out 'yer not Fats..your Matthews' It's all total improv, Im in the room, this guy gets shot down with a pistol, I leave out the back door. just one more MKUltra ripoff, we are never paid for this stuff.
Definitely my favorite Sugar Babies side. The brilliant multi-instrumentalism of Philip d'Arcy on harmonica and violin, Mike Mosiello's trumpet playing throughout the entire number, the commanding choruses by Arthur Fields -- and, not to mention Fred Hall's silly yet simultaneously innovative scat singing. Absolutely the definitive version of this song.
This band cut a string of these novelty records from 1926 to 1931 and I'm impressed by all of them. The Roaring 20s at it's height. The vocalist was Tom Stacks (1899-1936) on most of them.
Hi Martin, Norman Thoms is a relative and his work is hard to find so this is a real gem. Do you happen to have any more information about this song/band?
WOW !!! LOVE IT !! GREAT Graphics too !!
WONDERFUL !!! Thank you for sharing All these Fabulous songs and great photographs ! I Definitely was born in the wrong decade.
My Grandfather Charlie Butterfield on trombone. Still looking for live action.
This was 'Texas' piano playing. When he got to NYC, he changed/learned. I/we can't imagine what listening to the different styles of piano playing in NYC had ton these guys. A Pete Wending ior Frank Signorelli sounds a hell lot different from 1922 to 1929. These guys listened to a JP Johnson. A Lee Sims. A Fats Waller. TONS of different styles! ALL 'progressive'! WE(in 2022) forget that. 'They' did not want to be/sound dated! While WE want to re-live these times...WE NEVER lived these times. THEY did! As much as WE would have loved to hear Seger play this song in 1995(before he died) He couldn't, even if he wanted to. 1925 was 1925. and 1926 was 1926. Sorry to say....
So HOT set's your ears on fire!
So-o good!
Okeh # 41337. Nice tune. Girls sure looked nice in 1929. Just a different era and the fashions were different.
Another hot ,hilarious Harry Reser arrangement. Includes my Grandpa Bob Effros on trumpet 🎺,kazoo and sound affects with other well knowns. Thank you Martin.
He was 18 years old at this time.

0:07 MIKE MOSIELLO!!! :^D 🎺 IK
This was credited at the Red Hot Jazz website as Fats Waller and his Orchestra, which sounds right. There were no horns in his rhythm group.
Super good sound, but I'd rather watch the record playing than see anything else.
It sounds like Fats and Hank were having a competition here.
known as a "cutting contest" I believe.

I didn't know Lee Morse had her own version of this song.
Yes, Bless you Sister until the mean Nun cracks ya right in the knuckles of your writing hand with her metal-edged ruler! Or perhaps the time the "Dear Nun" hits you right in the face with the eraser full of chalk dust! TRUE STORY
The Band is good.
What a sound…what a band…Hal Kemp’s story needs to be told by Hollywood in an old-style technicolor musical. He gave so very much in his all too short life.
Love this, and love playing it at .75x, idk just sounds so nice
arranged by Frank Skinner
Joe Venuti & Eddie Lang (1:40)!!!!! :^D 🎺 LP
Nice trumpet solo at 1:01! Great picture of the band, too! Thank you for sharing!!! :^D 🎺 LP
I've seen a record under "Joe Curran's Band" which is a pseudonym usually associated with Hal Kemp. The record says vocal refrain. Wonder if that version is available anywhere. Jack Purvis really sounds great here.
This might strike the modern listener as very sophisticated - and it is - today! But in 1931 it was really just the last development of an already outmoded mood in popular music. The public had had it with pep. In 1932 and '33 people might have wished for the economic depression to go away, but the depression in music was just what they craved. Crooning and soothing, nearly rhythm-less ballad tempos took over the air. Even the ubiquitous saxophone was cut back to a minimum, except for the ever-so-delicate simperings of Guy Lombardo's section. Snooks and his band were one of many who had their last record date that year, never to be heard from again.
Who is the hot fiddler?
either George Sonics or Eddie Brodsky
@@harlsmith2521 Great name for a musician: Eddie Sonics! I'm guessing Eddie Brodsky was Irving Brodsky's brother?? Anyway, a violin should be added to the personnel above.
This is such a fun song
Looks Like A Soundtrack From Old Toons As Woodpeecker
Aw. There's Brother Duncan. And he's lookin' smart too. Look at that cat stridin' over. He looks like he's tryin' to get somethin' from me......... at 1:48. I believe that this is the earliest documented use of the word " stride ", in reference to to this swinging style of piano playing.
Yeahp they called it rag time not stride
In this context, I think he means walking over, rather than to do with the piano playing, unless he meant the feel of the piano playing evoked the feel of him walking over quickly .
If you slow it down a bit, you can hear that Fats says "Look at that cat stridin' over *there*..." and what he's doing over there is playing stride. I think that supports your contention that Fats was using the word stride to describe the piano playing, rather than walking over, which Hank wasn't doing anyway. My 2¢ worth!
@@bigdick3228I read an interview of one of the stride pianists where he asked what they referred to the music as. The pianist stated that they simply called it jazz, not really a special term. It would make sense considering there weren't very many other forms of jazz at the time (except for "Jungle Music" which was pretty much late 1920s Ellington style, and Creole Jazz)
Super excellent with very good interesting photos
Very appropriate pictures! Thank you!
I found this 78 when I was about 10. I'm turning 50 in two months and I still have it. Just played it for the first time in years.
Great side, love Les Reis (underrated vocalist). :^D 🎺
This song was written by Fred Rose in 1924, published by Melrose Bros of Chicago and only recently (January, 2020) fell into the public domain. Fred Rose went on to Nashville, joined with Roy Acuff and formed his own publishing company that was instrumental in making Nashville the country music capital of America. For more information, read Chicago's Music Industry.
LOVE Mike Mosiello, actually one of the best! :^D 🎺
This Is Symphonic !
Nice one..Venuti always adds some spice.. Like Cliff Edwards version also
