I love this episode, particularly because, although it wasn’t really funny, it was kind of humorous to me how, when Burke and Urko were trapped together, Urko would very easily lose his top ha ha

Say what you want about this series, but "7 year old" me was in front of the television watching this series during its initial run and as giddy as could be! To this very day, some 50 years later (well, almost... but close enough to count), I **STILL** have my full set of trading cards, and many of the Mego action figures (dolls? I mean, they ARE 8" tall and fully articulate), and the series on DVD. While I don't have the "Ape City" playset anymore, I do have pictures of me getting it from Santa. So.... NYAH! 😉😁 Anyway... while you might consider this episode a "step down" from the pilot, it DOES have a stellar cast of actors. Aside from the main cast of Roddy McDowall, James Naughton and Ron Harper, some very well known character actors were in this episode, including William Smith, John Hoyt, and the Beastmaster himself, Marc Singer. This series, while "short", did a lot to expand on the Planet of the Apes legacy. Now, MINOR spoiler: If you pay close attention, you'll see that this series takes place outside of the original movie's timeline. But of course, time isn't exactly straight forward, either.... most people "see time as linear. Cause to effect. But what it REALLY is, is a big ball of, wibbley wobbley, timey wimey..... stuff." Yes, that was a Dr. Who reference, and if you look at pretty much every "time travel" movie and/or TV show.... this "theory" is proven. Doesn't matter if it's Planet of the Apes, Dr. Who, Back to the Future, or anything else you can name. The series was "formulaic", in that it followed the same kind of storytelling popular at the time. Go somewhere, someone gets captured, escapes, deals with whatever the plot was, and moves on. Because it was expensive to film, it didn't last very long. But "us kids" (at the time) literally ATE (APE?) that series UP! We bought the toys, the trading cards, the playsets.... if it was branded as Planet of the Apes.... we bugged our parental unit(s) to get it for us. The problem was, like Battlestar Galactica a few years later, making the series wasn't "profitable enough", no matter how many toys and advertisements it sold. Also, and while this isn't stated as "canon", I believe that "Dr. Zaius" isn't a name, but a title. Each generation has a "Chief Defender of the Faith" bearing that title/name. It's their job to "know the truth", but also to "protect simian society" from making the same mistakes that humans did. One last thing: I HIGHLY appreciate that, not only are you doing these episode reviews (though I'd love to see your actual reactions to each episode)... I dearly appreciate you giving a link to be able to download each episode! While I own the series on DVD (as well as all 5 movies AND the documentary "Behind the Planet of the Apes"), you posting those links saves me a boatload of time digitizing them all myself (for personal use only, of course).

Absolutely the best episode of the series. The bad news is from here on end most episodes are more pedestrian and typical of the one hour TV drama of the time. He's not in the credits but the unmistakable voice of Zeko is the great Norman Alden, a very prolific character actor of the 60's, 70's and 80's. He might be best recognized as the soda shop owner in the original Back To The Future and as the voice of Aquaman on The Superfriends. Since the music was mentioned, the main theme is credited to the great Lalo Schifrin who might be best remembered for the unforgettable theme to Mission: Impossible.

Maybe it’s because hindsight is 2020, but I don’t quite understand how the twist in Planet of the Apes was so big. Like, there’s nothing super alien about the planet, there are humans, there’s dolls that say “Mama”. It just doesn’t seem like something that would’ve been an unpredictable twist

It's a great episode, especially when the gorilla refuses to kill the three fugitives, because he gave his word. There is an anachronism (or parachronism, if you prefer) in the fixed telephone on the wall. Generally the complete subway is anachronistic and looks very seventies (1970s, that is). Another plot hole is the fact that Urko is immobilized so long by the electric shock. Given the fact that the light is battery fed, probably attached to some solar panel of some sort, it much have a low voltage / wattage. Urko should feel nothing more than licking at a 9V battery... :)

This is probably the best episode of the series. The character dynamics between Urko & Burke are great, two enemies working together to survive which is a troupe that's been used alot over the years but Ape's was one of the first shows to do it. I highly recommend you read Tales of the Forbidden Zone it's collection of short stories which delve into the OG movies, the TV show, & cartoon series. One of the stories in that book is a follow up to The Trap it tells how Urko comes to terms with what happened in the Subway station...HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

It'll be very interesting to see where they go with this, me personally I think we will see the nuclear war that's preluded to the OG series. I think ultimately this is what's gonna happen by the third film. Hope Wes Ball continues to be involved with this franchise I loved the Joseph Campbell heroes journey that he brought to the franchise.
