I'm not sure of the year, but many moons ago I jumped out of a plane. The quality of this video is terrible as it was recorded by my phone from VCR. The tragic twist is that this plane, the crew, and a different group of skydivers were killed when this plane crashed about a month later.

      Yes, the Peabody Essex Museum owns many historic buildings that were open for touring prior to Covid, but they have not reopened- I am hopeful they will. PEM did add a self guided walking tour of the Brown Street courtyard which is wonderful.

    loved the part of the parker brothers games and about the jail! so interesting! Finally I know what the small tombstones really mean! I am a historian so thanks for a very interesting video full of info! I have one question though, they say it is crazy to visit during mid or end of Oct, you think visiting around Oct 20th is that packed? what about visiting after Halloween? is it still cool and with some momentum? we are planning to visit from Mexico City.

    • @SalemwithBeth
      @SalemwithBeth 2 роки тому

      Visitors who think Halloween is too busy now visit earlier in the month of October, so pretty much every weekend is congested. It depends on what you are looking for. October is fun with weekend festivals, events, and lots of people watching! If you want to avoid the huge crowds come on a weekday in the fall (will still be busy but not like the weekends) or come in the summer which is beautiful! You can add a sail on our harbor and see the beautiful gardens in bloom.

    Hi just found your channel. Great job I really enjoyed. Doing some deep ancestral research of late & am stunned how far back my family goes in this Country and have some familial connections to the area. It’s fantastic to be able to see it. I actually found a record wherein my ancestors marriage was officiated by none other than Cotton Mather. I know right? Arghhh...😰. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful & obviously very smart & intuitive Afghan Hound. ☮️🌹🌟🌞🌝

    Beautiful video as always and great story! Thank you also for clearing up the "land grab" theory. However, there is one small tidbit that many do not know. Giles did plead "not guilty." However, what he does not follow it with was "by God and my country," which was required. So, as I understand it to be, they were waiting for him to say that last part of that sentence which Giles refused to do, even when those rocks were piled on him.

    • @SalemwithBeth
      @SalemwithBeth 2 роки тому

      YES! You are correct on that. What I understand is he also said he was innocent under arrest, but because he never completed his plea in the meeting house they could not proceed. There are lots of nuances about these times that would make for a very long (but very interesting) tour if I could include them all!

    Hi Beth, Love your videos! I'm from Swampscott , your close by neighbor. Just Subbed you after watching your great Salem videos. Just caught off guard on this one when you said that Gen. Grant was at Gettysburg?? Are you sure about that? I don't believe he was there at all. It was Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine that held Little round top. And as you said Gen. Meade was defiantly there at Gettysburg as well.

    • @SalemwithBeth
      @SalemwithBeth 3 роки тому

      Hello! You are likely right I had some wrong info in there...I was doing these travel videos just as a way to document my vacations for a while. I didn't become a tour guide until years later so now I'm an obsessive fact checker! Gettysburg was one of the most powerful places I've visited. I imagine not just what it was like for the soldiers, but also for the little town that basically became a mass grave. So very sad that our deadliest war with the largest death toll was brother vs. brother. Thank you for correcting this info for anyone else who may take a look!

    Thank you for sharing the tour! I plan on visiting Salem next month and am very excited for the trip. Can I ask how the parking situation is for tourists?

    • @SalemwithBeth
      @SalemwithBeth 2 роки тому

      Parking situation can be the scariest thing about Salem. If you travel during October, I suggest getting to Salem by 9 am and grabbing a spot somewhere (No, I'm not kidding). There are many great breakfast places and coffee shops to hang out or take a morning tour so you can plan what you want to go back and spend more time at. Parking can be pricey which is unfortuante. There is very little free parking on side streets as most are resident only so I wouldn't spend too much time trying to hunt for something that doesn't exist. Parking around the Salem Common as of now is still free, but limited. If you can grab a space there- score!

      Salem tries to be as safe as possible, but as of now restrictions are voluntary although some business still ask for masks. It is a personal decision but if you are in a huge crowd of strangers I personally think it is a good idea.

    We were prepared for cool and wet weather and had surprisingly good weather and the flowers were just starting to bloom so it worked for us. My biggest tip would be to not take a narrated bus tour as the traffic can be tough and it will take way too much time. The metro is incredibly easy to get around on and almost every site you want to see will list what metro stop you get off at...

    @elisasahhar YES, I had jet lag... We did an overnight flight and got in about 9 a.m. I would be up almost every night and tired throughout the day, but I survived! You don't have to speak French- I did a beginner course and they appreciated I tried, but most would answer in English anyhow. Parisians were alot like Bostonians (where I'm from)- they are not rude, they are just busy and may not have the time to stop and answer your question so don't take it personal! You will have a great time!

  • @elisasahhar
    @elisasahhar 13 років тому

    Hi again! My trip to Paris is next Wednesday and I have a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind. :) 1. What time in the morning did you arrive to Paris? Did you experience a lot of jet lag? 2. Did you have to speak a lot of French? I've been practicing, but I'm really not that great at it still. 3. Were the Parisians nice? Thank you!!! So excited to go!! I'll definitely take a video and post it as well.

    • @SalemwithBeth
      @SalemwithBeth 2 роки тому

      How did I just find this...so sorry and way too late! But YES on jet lag- push through it and try to get on their schedule. Melatonin helps just before bed. I took very limited French lessons prior. They mostly speak English, but did seem to appreciate that I tried to learn their language instead of taking it for granted they would speak English. Every Parisian I interacted with was nice, but they don't walk around smiling and laughing nor do they ask you if you need help if you don't ask so I can see the rep for being 'cold', though I didn't find them that way.

    @elisasahhar We went to a concert at Notre Dame- your sister will have an amazing experience! The ride to the top of the Eiffle is a bit scary, but when you get to the top its so heavily caged you feel very secure and get a great view of the city. If you can get back to see the twinkle lights at night give it a try- they only stay on a short time now to save electricity but so pretty
