I was A Coy, 2RGJ, we took over 45 Commando up in West Belfast in November 1981, with part of Andytown, Turf Lodge with the Monagh bypass, Ballymurphy, New Barnsley etc as our TAOR, we heard about this RPG attack of course, now I can put a face and name to the attack, he is a brave guy, much respect to him, especially the calm matter of fact way he talks about it today.👏🏼 Glad he survived for his wife and baby!👏🏼🙏🏼 This was a nice piece, I certainly appreciated it, as we are veterans of a long, deadly but forgotten conflict, so thank you! 👍🏽🙏🏼 We lost 3 guys during our tour of West Belfast 1981-82, in the Crocus Street Ambush, Danny Holland, Nick Malakos and Tony Rapley, may all comrades, from whichever regiment or Corps, who didn't return from Ulster, including my friend Matt Maddocks RIP! 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Never forgotten! ❤ And to all the many wounded from the conflict, you are not forgotten either! 👏🏼🙏🏼 We need more vids like this as we are all getting on now! Actually the IRA leadership outside of prison initially refused to support the hunger strike because too much momentum had already been built up from the 1980 hunger strike and they believed they would not be able to win the public’s support again. The hunger strike was a decision of the IRA inside of long kesh and was not ordered from outside.

Belfast erupted with buses etc on fire everywhere and large scale rioting.I was a fourteen year old schoolboy, and somehow managed to walk four miles from school across town which was really hairy. I remember turning my school blazer inside out and taking my tie off so I wouldn't get jumped. It was terrifying. But really just another day in my childhood in Belfast.
