“Goin’ Home Goin’ Home, By the Waterside I Will Rest My Bones, Listen to the River Sing Sweet Songs”
Grateful
We still have 40 miles of river to go, but we will not be paddling today. We skim along the water from Separation Canyon to Pierce Ferry Landing as the waters grow wider and calmer.
Thanks to Scott for putting this adventure together and for bringing us together once again, as a Tramily.
Thanks to Kurtis, Kyle and Ann for the photos and video clips that filled in where I missed.
Thanks to The Colorado Crew, The Boston Bobbers and my G&T WingWoman and her talented husband for being a rollicking group of Merry Pranksters. Cheers!
Thanks to Heather, Tony, Tom, Andy, Will, Jesse, Maddi and Amanda for keeping us safe, fed, comfortable and suspended in a bubble of child-like wonder. #outdoorsunlimited

BROKEDOWN PALACE
By Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia
Fare you well, my honey
Fare you well, my only true one
All the birds that were singing
Are flown, except you alone
Gonna leave this brokedown palace
On my hands and my knees, I will roll, roll, roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time, in my time, I will roll, roll, roll
In a bed, in a bed
By the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
River gonna take me, sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back home
It's a far gone lullaby sung many years ago
Mama, Mama, many worlds I've come since I first left home
Going home, going home
By the waterside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
Going to plant a weeping willow
On the bank's green edge it will grow, grow, grow
Singing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go, the river will roll, roll, roll
Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul

Killer Fang Rapid and a Lazy River Party Barge Between rapids, we took a hike to see a boulder etched with a commemorative marking. In June & July 1983 the river saw record flow of 97,000 cubic feet per second and this stone represents the high water mark of that event. This was the massive dam release that propelled a team of three river guides to make a speed record transit of the canyon. The...

The River gets wider and so do the blue skies above. It’s another hot day punctuated by a refreshing splash through Kolb Rapid, AKA 205 Mile Rapid. “205 will eat you alive” warn veteran river guides. Will treats us to a bedtime story and the bravest get a glimpse of some of the critters with whom we share our camp. Another dazzling night under this dark sky.

The day has arrived. We are putting on our game-faces and clutching talismans for fortune. We salute Vulcan’s Anvil as we paddle by and give Odin’s Eye a wink. Every wave, every hole, every hydraulic feature up until now have prepared us for this notorious white water section and we don’t know if it will be enough. This massive rapid is known to be the most difficult in the Canyon’s entire 280 ...

Another side canyon offers us a break from paddling with enticing pools and waterfalls to soothe us. We enjoy the swift flowing water back on the Colorado River. Nothing but riffles to negotiate today. S. A. M.’s thermometer pegs at 125 degrees F (52* C) then simply reads “HOT.” Yes, indeed…HOT. We cruise about 25 miles today.

It's our fourth day on the water, as we negotiate the thrilling rapids of The Middle Granite Gorge; Forester, Fossil, Spector, Bedrock and Deubendorff. Another big thanks to Kurtis for his rapids videos. They bring us right into the action. (Honestly, I was just looking at my paddle and the paddle in front of me for all of the white water.) After lunch, we had a "choose your adventure" opportun...

Once we paid our dues to the river, we were ready for a magical afternoon, starting at Elves Chasm and finishing with a haunted slot canyon. A lunch break at Big Dune Beach gives us a chance to admire stone sculpted by water.

Now I see the toilet. Open air excitement. The scenery on this trip was just beautiful after beautiful. I can see that a lot of planning and luck goes into a trip like this to be successful. It was pretty cool watching all your videos. Thank you for the documentation of the trip and the enjoyment that went along with it. John from MI

Well someone found some rocks shaped like a heart. I'm thinking the sun was pretty much relentless. The rapids were pretty good today. Beautiful view at 9:40. It's kind of sad to see the rafts being deflated. One last night under the stars. John from MI

That looked like a good set of rapids at 2:58. If you fall in, get your feet pointing downstream. Looks like the Ravens/Crows keep following you. Nice touch with the guitar playing. John from MI

So that's how you take showers on the trip! Did anyone need to be airlifted out on the trip? I can see many opportunities for trips and falls that could result in broken bones. I'm interested in the bathrooming on this trip. Did they bring portable toilets or have to pack out excrement? Or did you dig catholes? And what was the sleep setup like? Backpacking tents or cowboy camping? John from MI

Bet you wish you had your sit pad from the AT when you have to sit on those rocks. I'm way behind on your videos. I was on a camping trip and then life interrupts my viewing time. Looks like fun but it's a long time to be on a rafting trip. John from MI
