VHF & GMRS Antenna for Home
In our first attempt to install a GMRS base station antenna we failed terribly. After regrouping and reevaluation we now have a working dual band, Ed Fong GMRS / VHF base station antenna with acceptable SWR levels.

What is the brand/model of your dual band VHF GMRS radio? I didn’t think that combination was permitted. I did unlock my HTs, just in case, like many others do. But I don’t want to remove a resistor on my mobile.

It’s made by Rugged Radios and it’s a commercial VHF & UHF mobile radio. I use VHF for the FD I belong to and UHF for my work. Both are licensed frequencies. Then I also use it for GMRS.

I'm curious Paul. I have the same Astatic SWR meter. I noticed that when you set the mark with the dial, you went all the way to the power mark at the end of the scale. In the instructions it states to go to the SWR mark which is at the midpoint at 12 o'clock. Which one of us is wrong. The instructions aren't clear. Thanks for the video.

    • @paulethier3416

I’m not sure. You are correct the instructions were a bit unclear so I watch a UA-cam video on how to use it and that’s how they use it in the video that I watched. So I could have been doing it wrong. I had a new radio with a new antenna and a new SWR meter and the SWR level was acceptable so I never gave it a second thought.

I had one of those antennas for a long time. My swr started climbing after awhile. What I found was that the wire inside of the pvc started settling down. I used a small wooden dowel and a few pieces of electrical tape to keep the wire straight. Installed it back into the pipe and no more issues. I eventually gave it to a newly licensed ham radio operator, to help him get going.

My way was to use a piece of strong fishline attached at the top of the antenna and fed through a tiny hole I drilled through the top cap. Once the cap was back on, I tensioned the line and sealed the hole and line with a bit of epoxy. P.S. A tip to keep away any potential moisture damage which can occur with some antennas, (I learned the hard way) assemble in a dry-air environment, and drop a couple of fresh desiccant packs into the pipe before closing it all up and sealing any gaps.

Great antenna. Looks like better coax too. With mine (DBJ-1 and 60' of KMR400) I get 1.00 SWR at 462.55 and 1.03 at 467.5500. On VHF, this antenna has a steep drop. SWR of 1.74 on 154.5 but 5.01 on 157.5. You can use this for 2M ham too but it's not ideal (2.28 SWR on 146.52). At the end of the day, Height is Might. Good luck.

This video is pretty much convinced me to not bother. I got a free radio and have been looking up UA-cam videos to see how to install it but it seems like the reality is that nobody really uses this anymore. Since Waze gives better traffic advice and alerts, unless we are in a HTF scenario, I really don’t see the point in installing CB at all.

Cb is okay in some applications, but on foot with walkie talkies, gmrs and even frs beats CB simply because CB walkie talkies use more batteries for similair applications, and the batteries die much faster. And frs/gmrs radios are way more compact and easier to lug around.

    • @paulethier3416

  • @amels4620
    @amels4620 7 днів тому

Uhhh you made a wrong assessment on uhf frequencies. Vhf is mainly line of sight (with exception being during good propagation). Under similar conditions, uhf will always exceed vhf as it can penetrate directly thru mountainous or hilly terrain or even city buildings depending upon air cracks in infrastructure. I would say it would be best to travel with gmrs, murs, and a tweeked cb radio; and if shi$ were to hit the proverbial fan and suddenly warp over to some Walking Dead scenario you would be in good shape. Especially if you have all the different antenna setups, including random wire, extra power cables and fuses, and most certainly batteries to power each device.

Lots of good advice in the comments here. Things to look out for: Ground plane issues eliminating things from the equation to see if it gets any better. Moving it away from the other antenna Coax length/quality. Along with the connectors as well The route of the coax could be too close to conductors.

Chinese never advertise the correct lumens on any part. It's probably 500

Yes and the cell phone replaces everything else.

I agree but in our area cell phone has a lot of dead areas. A two-way radio fills in a lot of gaps.

Just bought a 24 TRD Offroad Premium in same color as yours. Super happy with it and fell better since hearing about all of the engine issues the newer turbo motors are having. Plan on keeping it for a long time.

Me too, I just couldn’t do turbos and hybrids just yet. Plus these 5th Gen’s are bulletproof.

Ours does not have a comfort mode but I put the fan on auto and it ramps up and down as needed to maintain temp. Its probably the same feature with a different name. Thanks for commenting.

If you have the stock bulbs in there you can buy Led bulbs some really good ones that you can get a decent price on they make bulbs for your headlights everything everything your truck has they make LED bu Bulbs LastFit they actually make fog light bulb they’re calling to switch back where you couldn’t drive with your fog lights clear can you turn them off and switch them back on and it turned Amber and color but it does it make your actual lens look Amber like you’re doing now so I think you might be able to get a cheaper fog light bulb from last fit just don’t get the switch back LED just get the clear LED bulb because you already have the amber colored lenses and watch some videos on UA-cam about them they’re really nice they make really like really bright bulbs they come with the fans I think they have a two-year warranty like everybody with Toyotas most of them lasfit is a company a lot of people use
