Alternative Routes to avoid Tumble Pine Forest on Route 47
Just outside Tumble, Carmarthenshire a pine forest exist, this where usually route 47 the cycle route runs. However, due to tree felling the route through this forest has been closed from about September 2024. According to the notice it could be closed for up to 6 months. Active Travel (Wales), has suggested a route which involves carrying your bike over a bridge up or down some steps which I really don't think is acceptable. Carmarthenshire have recommended the Active Travel route. I ride another alternative route which avoids having to carry your bike, but it does mean having to cycle further and long a busy road.

The title says it all really. I've had an accident and I'm out after a month of not riding to assess any damage to the bike and to see how my shoulder is. I also ride over to the start of route 47 by the pine forest at Tumble. At the time this video was recorded which is early October 2024 the route through the pine forest is shut. Starting from Pembrey Country Park, the video starts just outside the park. I cycle on the edge of Pembrey onto Kidwelly and aim to cycle to Ferryside. As you'll see the road is closed, so can I get there? On the way back I cycle through the marshlands which run between Kidwelly and Pembrey Country Park. This is near Pembrey airport. Hollyland Lark M2 USB C Receiver connected to DJI Osmo Action 3 -

This is my sort of review of the Hollyland Lark M2 USB C, but from a cycling vloggers point of view. I've bought the USB C version as this fits nicely into the side of the DJI Osmo Action 3. It also plugs into a phone quite nicely too. I firstly do an unboxing of the USB C Receiver version of this kit, and then move onto to real life cycling and see how the microphones work when cycling along. ...

Thanks for taking the time to explore alternative routes. I tried a different route today, follow Bethesda Road till it joins up with Station Road, the road from Cwm Mawr to Pontyberem, bear left towards Pontyberem until you see a Y junction on your left, turn left and follow the single track road and you will get to Route 47. You passed it in your vid at timestamp 12.50. It's a long, steep in places, climb from Station Rd to the cycletrack.
Thanks Buzz. And thanks for posting your alternative route details. I will check it out and so can other viewers.
Sorry to hear about your accident, pleased to see that you are recovering. Yes, that section of 47 being closed is annoying for walkers and cyclists but it is is worse for those that rely on Mobility Scooters and there are quite a few that use 47
Thanks buzz. Yeah I know the closing of the pine forest part is very frustrating. The alternative route really isn't fit for purpose. Expecting anyone to carry bikes up and down steps is ridiculous. And as you say anyone with health conditions and mobility scooters it's even worse. I've written to the council, the AM and active travel but haven't had much back.
@@CrossHandsRider letter to the MP perhaps ?
That's a good call actually. Although as this is a Welsh matter I don't know how much sway MPs have but I will drop the MP a message
Glad you are ok
Thanks. Was painful for a bit but nothing more serious thankfully
It's a pat!!!!!!
Where?
Does the C-type connection work well? The C-type connection hole on the Osmo Action 3 is so deep that I wonder if the connection will work well.
I have had some issues with random disconnections with the lark M2. So I think it depends what you are using the Usb c port for and how it's all mounted. If like me you have the Action 3 mounted on a bike, the vibrations can cause issues.
@CrossHandsRider thanks for reply
Great video thank you
Thankyou for watching. I'm happy that you enjoyed.
Where does the cycle path begin in Brynamman
Nearby Happy Corner Chinese there is a pub and a lane that leads to the rugby ground. At the far side of the ground the cycle path starts.
Thanks for dropping by
shame cycle route 47 is closed off outside Tumble since they are tree havesting
Yes it is frustrating. That's going on for up to 6 months so could be April before it opens.
@@CrossHandsRider I hope not, not only for me but for other people that use route 47 to get from Cross hands to Llanelli
@@buzz4175I've actually written to the AM, to the transport AM. Council came up with an alternative route but I don't think it's practical. Will be making a video of their route shortly to see what the pitfalls are.
@@CrossHandsRider I have been on the alternative route, there is no way that I could get my Ebike up and down the steps by Ty Newydd
@@buzz4175 Yes I agree. I've just cycled it myself for a video and it disadvantages people with health conditions and heavy bikes.
The Welsh government are not serious about anything!
I'm.aware of that. They talk like they do but in practice they do the opposite
Just like me, using a cool DJI Action 3 and Hollyland Lark M2
But have you suffered the same problems that I have?
What's d problem @@CrossHandsRider
Thanks for the video. I just bought watch today and went for running but it doesn‘t show the map . How did you make it to show the map?
When you say show the map are you talking about on the app on your phone? If you are you need to refresh it so it syncs back to your watch. After the sync the map should be on the app with your stats
Are you able to show any of the old railway that passed through CrossHands?
Thanks for the comment. I can definitely look into it for a future video.
@@CrossHandsRider I can't find any google images or maps.
@@earlofsandwich7884I had a quick look myself. Wikipedia has something about a line starting in Gorslas but I expect most signs of the railway are long gone
@@earlofsandwich7884I had a quick look myself. Wikipedia has something about a line starting in Gorslas but I expect most signs of the railway are long gone
The cycle path along route 47 follows the line. As a lot of cycle paths are built on old railway lines
Could be worth submitting video footage of close passes to Operation Snap
Yeah I have thought about it for the worst cases like in this case. I don't want to do it to drivers that do make an effort to move over but this particular one didn't move an inch.
Bit of an after thought, I have a couple of drones if you would like to add some drone shots to your channel you are welcome to one, small enough to fit in your pocket or bike bag
Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that, when I got somewhere very scenic where drones would really add to the atmosphere of the video.
@@CrossHandsRider let me and I shall meet up with you around Mynydd Mawr ))
let me know lol
thanks for the vid, that is one of my favourite circular routes 👍👍
I've only cycled to Paxton's twice. The last time was entirely on back lanes, this one was partly on them as you saw. The lanes are a bit of amaze in that area!
@@CrossHandsRider they are good though :))
Instead of going past the TV mast you could try going via Llyn Llech Owain, still a good climb though
@@buzz4175 I've cycled up that way as well. I've looped around, it's not as steep as the hill opposite the Gate
@@CrossHandsRider opposite the Gate is a hard climb
I have been on those roads a few times, wouldn't have managed it without the electric motor lol, the views are stunning. It's surprising how busy those single track roads get. Well done for managing pedal power only :))
Thanks @buzz. That hill was an absolute killer but like you say the views up there are stunning and yes I came across a few cars and vans coming down the lanes. The back lanes are still a lot safer than the main roads, and the lanes are probably easier on a cycle or bike than in a car as you don't have to worry so much about passing places.
Thats a nice ride I usually start in crosshands near the cinema, then down tumble route and onto the cycle path. Although last summer i did Kidwelly to burry port then llanelli for coffee and back. Its a super traffic free route. Hopefully be down that way in August.
Yeah it is a nice route. I started recording the video from Cynheidre but started cycling from Crosshands area. Another fork route I sometimes do is to fork off at Horeb to Five Roads and ride over to Trimsaran, down the hill, and make my way back via Pembrey country park, or via Pinged and onto Burryport that way.
Ooh i was there two weeks ago, but walked it with my friend doing the foot path loop back round Betws
First time I've been on this route. I haven't been on the foot path though.
I've taken exactly the same looping route but starting from Ammanford - I think it came to about 36 miles in total. Another little loop in that area worth checking out is to take Penygarn Road in Tycroes and stay on it all the way. Once you pass the houses the road becomes very rural and it comes out by Tafarn Y Deri in Llanedi. Carry on through Fforest to Pontardulais and then return to Ammanford via the route you rode from Garnswllt but in reverse. That big downhill you rode down is a bit of a lungbuster riding up but then after that you can almost freewheel back to Ammanford.
I know it's a lung buster as I rode back the same way I went. I will check out you're recommendations though. Always looking for extra routes.
I just back from Wales and 20MPH limit in high density urban area is good for me. Less queing on next traffic light. I stuck to limit. Same with narrow road villages 20MPH - perfect. But in some places - like outskirts of Prestaryn (Flat wide, Rhyl Coast road) 20MPH is a bit pointless. My car need 2nd gear to cruise at this speed... So it depends. Im not against 20MPH zones, but they need to be revisited.
I agree they need to be revisited. I think it's all down to where people are likely to come into contact with Cars, such as schools, parks and town centres. Some roads in this area go on for miles with hardly anyone about and it's 20mph for no real good reason apart from it meets some sort of artifical criteria. Thanks for popping by. I did mean to reply back, but forgot!
I don't think they carried out any research into the added danger the 20mph poses to 2 wheeled traffic. I ride a motorcycle and I would previously overtake cyclists at 30mph in the opposite lane giving them the whole left lane to themselves to move and avoid potholes and bad tarmac. Now at 20 we are much closer together travelling at the same speed and competing for the same piece of good tarmac. What seems a good thing for cyclists on paper has resulted in putting them in more danger.
I've been plenty of motorcyclists getting frustrated with the current speed. I've actually ended up cycling along side a few of them, they can't shake me off and I can't shake them. I can usually on the flat keep to 20mph, on the hills I obviously don't and down hill can easily do 30mph plus. I don't think any real investigations were done, apart from in a few small areas. It's the problem with a national roll out of a scheme. It should of been done on a case by case basis.
Seen not been!
I think its partly a cash grab but also a sort of nanny state and an effect of a party being in power too long. it smells a little of ego politics when Lee Waters and Drakeford have been involved.
It can’t be a cash grab when it costs more to process a fine than the fine itself. Plus, if people obey the law, then there’s no grabbing possible.
@@nuttycommuter3718 if you don't get public buy in its a lost cause. And it undermines areas that truly need 20mph. I'm finding cycling now that drivers are doing more risky stunts than they were before. Close passing is far more of an issue and that's not getting policed at all.
@@CrossHandsRider all valid points. I would rather ride on a 30mph road with people driving properly, than on a 20 with people close-passing and all the usual crap
I see you noticed the small stretch of road that reverts to 30mph just before you enter Ammanford . . . why is that hundred yards or so deemed "safe" to drive at 30mph when the same road either side is not? There's some sheep out there who moan that it's all about safety. But then they wouldn't be happy until we have a man walking in front of each car waving a red flag. A 30mph limit was created when cars had inefficient drum brakes and cross-ply tyres and was deemed safe for decades. I've noticed a rise in the police in pairs out and about in the Ammanford area with hand-held speed cameras. It's a bad law and nothing but a cash grab.
While I live only a stone's throw from the Pantyffynnon swing bridge, I never realised there was one at Llandeilo. There's another over the Amman on the cycle path between Ammanford/Pontamman and Glanamman if you want to add another swing bridge to your collection. Thanks for making the video - great to see some local content.
Thanks Mark. Yes I'm aware of the Swing Bridge at Pontamman. That one is on the amman valley cycle path which I've cycled past but haven't actually gone over. I have thought of doing a ride to all 3 bridges at some point. I've known about the one in Llandeilo for a while but only came across the Pantyffynon bridge by accident a few years back.
@@CrossHandsRider You've probably already done it but there's a nice spin over the Black Mountain from Brynamman via the A4069 that includes a hairpin which is the closest we've got to a Tour de France mountain stage around here. Before you get to Llangadog take a left toward Bethelehem and on to Ffairfach. You can then go straight on at the traffic lights on the A476 and home to Cross Hands. The reverse route would be just as good. 👍
I have been meaning to do that route. Been trying to build my fitness levels up a bit but the weather up till now hasn't been great for cycling. That route is on my to do list
Well done, that was a good spin, I was in that area in the early 80s, it has changed lol
Yeah it was a good ride, dry as well!. About 23 miles in all so I would think if you started where I started you should be able to do that ride on your e-bike and still have spare capacity.
@@CrossHandsRider yep, got a range of 38 mile, trouble is that my Ebike is my only mode of transport :)
Ah I see your limitation now. Still, plenty of rides around the cross hands and ammanford area within range
@@CrossHandsRider That there is, the Amman Valley Riverside path is a good one, Sustrans Route 437
@@buzz4175 Yes I know it well. I've cycled all the way up it past Brynamman and onto the Ystradowen. It's a nice ride
That a ride I’m hopefully going to do this year, when I get back out on my bike had winter off this year. Can how many miles is it to Neyland from Haverfordwest?
It's roughly 8 or 9 miles, and then you double it as you have to get back! So somewhere around 16 to 18 in total. The entire ride down to Pembroke Castle and back to Haverfordwest was just over 23 miles. I started the journey on the outskirts of Haverfordwest and parked in a house estate just near Pembrokeshire College. No double lines and was a quiet place to leave the car.
@@CrossHandsRider thank you, i will try put it on my list to do this year.

Nice to meet you to. Stay safe
How many miles was that, I live in Gorslas but restricted to 35 miles on my Ebike
You should be fine. It's roughly 17 miles. The only caveat is how much the hills eat into your battery
I didn't cycle to Carmarthen mind you. I started up in Llangunnor and looped around.
