My 1978 Yamaha XT500 Build!
This is my completed 1978 Yamaha XT500 Build. I bought it back in Summer 2022 and stored it as a upcoming project. Starting in January, I ripped the bike down to its frame, motor out and cleaned things back up. I installed a ton of new parts, specially the ones that wear and tear, learned a ton and had so much fun along the way. It wasn't easy but it also was if you know what I mean.
More riding to come and maybe another bike?!!?!?
Shot on a A7IV with Sigma 24-70.

If you know someone in Victoria who has a story - reach o...

1978 Yamaha XT500 Build: Ep1 - Teardown!
Переглядів 2,7 тис.Рік тому
Thanks for stopping by. Today I rip apart this 1978 XT500. I got it for a steal last summer and it has sat waiting till I found a space to build it. In this episode I talk about my plans for the motorcycle.
That bike does not weigh anywhere near 3000 lbs. I have one i know.
Fantastic project!!
How do you film these so well?
Nice bike dude...I love thumpers I have 5 xts and 2 srs...I really like what you did with yours
I just bought a 78 XT500...without a carburetor (I noticed you had none as well)...so many choices...what did you go with?
Amazing - it's a tank and so simple. Mine came complete but I had already removed the carb at this point to open it up and clean it out / rebuild it. I had the stock Mikuni VM32. Treated me well.
The worst mistake anyone can make at the stage is to not make sure the oil reservoir in the frame is 100% clean. Many people get the frame shot/media blasted and then painted in 2K or powder coat. If any shot gets into the oil reservoir that will be the end of your engine. Make sure it's properly plugged before you start the blasting. Then, rinse it out, then rinse it out again and then rinse it out again. Enjoy
My mate does a complete nuts and bolts rebuild on an XT about every 3 months. For a full breakdown he does it in 6 hours. As you know that's when the real work starts. Cleaning cleaning cleaning.
You really don't understand lbs and kilos
i got one, xt500 from 79 it was my dad’s and he gave it to me so i can bring it back to it former glory, but im trying to find websites or places where i can find new parts or replacement to hoses fittings and that sorts
3thousand? or 3 hundred?
Cool build, not overdone, will draw attention and looks fun to ride!. I just finished one, mostly stock with a few subtle mods
That's awesome! What year do you have? Thanks for the kind words!
I rebuilt the whole engine transmission put all new chain gears in it sprockets. Who built the front end put in said? I haven't drunk breaks real blazed it with a different rim but desperates the front desperates the rear modified it quite a bit the only thing we kept. Stock was the Swanger all the rest of the modified shocks that all that and we put a battery in it told all so little bit more stable.
I built the front end but that's awesome! Sounds cool!
Looks great. Def my style.
Thanks so much!
Bullet proof bikes those. I've given guys a run for their money in the woods on one. Xt 650 is even better
@@shibuigardenbungalows0420 Hell ya!
Are there any more videos in this series, or is this where you are right now?
Bikes on the last stages. Im making a final video completed soon! Stay tuned and I walk through everything i've done!
I recently got an xt 500 in a box and have no idea of where to start but also have a fully built one
That's awesome to have one - let alone two! Are you gonna re build it? They are fairly simple machines and can run on minimal wiring too!
@@waypointgp yea I'm going to attempt to restore it and rebuild it
This think shots crazy flames
Sooo insane and sick!
There's an oil line mod For the valve train
Got it! Went with a braided line one!
great tires kenda!
Heck ya!!
Nice work! Love to see people that put in the work to keep these motorcycles riding.
Have to keep the legends alive! thank you for watching!
Is that tank you've got on it actually off an xt500?
It's a Malcolm smith desert tank modified a little to fit. Those are sorta universal
Just got to love the xt and tt models. I have 2 for rough resto at the moment, ones a 76tt and the other is a 80 xt. Looking forward to more videos.
@@markcoppersmith Super cool. What's your plan with them?
@@waypointgp just tidy and light trail riding as all my others are restored.
nice mate! finally some xt500 content. Just wait to buy my xt500!
DO IT!
Love your work mate, keen to see where you take this build!
Thanks for the love!
Awesome I've followed u on insta for ages and I love older bikes I'm racing vmx thus season with my ts185 I've fully restored with dad I found under a piece of corrugated iron rotting away and it turned out to be an easy fix it basically started first time I put gas in it was a fun project. After working through the holidays I saved enough miney to get myself a ds80 and thise bikes do not dissapoint that's for sure
That's unreal man! Send some photos of the bikes over to me on instagram! It's great what a little elbow grease can do to an old bike. But also how easy old bikes can be to fix! Thanks for being here! all the love!
You super good man! Following u on IG since the beginning. Keep going! Full gas!
Full gas! I will - thank you so much <3
