The Phoenix touring motorglider is a beautiful little 2 place aircraft just as happy motoring along to the next destination, or engine off and soaring as a capable glider.
Join me in my Phoenix as I explore all the gliding adventures this unique aircraft enables across the Australian countryside.

Soaring on another beautiful smooth giant Morning Glory Cloud in my Phoenix #Motorglider.
After waiting a week since our first Morning Glory cloud we got another beautiful ride on our second last morning. A Grob G 109 and a Motorfalke (SF-25 Falke) took off with us, but were unable to make it to the cloud, so we rode this one on our own, up into the Northern Territory.
It was a slow start with only a very weak and wispy cloud where we joined, but it quickly grew into a beautiful smooth Glory Cloud. We rode the world's biggest wave up to 6,500ft for nearly 2.5 hours.

With no sign of a Glory for a week we flew out to Adele’s Grove for a coffee and a swim in the beautiful water hole.
We fly a morning glory cloud, surfing the worlds biggest wave in a Phoenix #motorglider
Переглядів 59014 днів тому
After our 3 day trip north to Burketown, we got to fly a morning glory cloud on our first morning. After taking off at first light, we climbed to the east and met the approaching cloud. After settling in front in the lift we flew for 2 hours with the engine off, climbing to about 5,600 ft at up to 300 ft/min. The Gulf of Carpentaria is the only place in the world where these clouds form with an...
Flying north to catch the Morning Glory Cloud in the gulf of Carpentaria in my Phoenix #motorglider
Переглядів 36714 днів тому
I am heading back to Burketown for my second year chasing the morning glory cloud, an amazing phenomena that only occurs reliably in North Queensland, Australia. This year I am joined by my friend Andreas who also owns a Phoenix Motorglider in France. We have 10 days booked in Burketown and hope to catch some clouds and surf the biggest wave in the world. #motorglider #aviation
Returning to surf the worlds biggest wave, the morning glory cloud, in my Phoenix #motorglider
Переглядів 568Місяць тому
The Morning Glory Cloud is a huge shock wave travelling through the humid air over the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia. Meteorologist call it a gravity wave but it is also mistakenly called a roll cloud. This is the only place in the world these clouds form with any regularity and predicatability. Our plan is to camp out in Burketown then motor up first thing in the morning, turn off ...
Flying in formation with wedgetail eagles in a Phoenix #motorglider
Переглядів 164Місяць тому
During the Ararat wave camp, Graham and I tried our hand at slope soaring, and found ourselves amongst a group of wedgetail eagles. These impressive birds seemed very interested in us and tried to fly in formation with us. #soaringflying #soaring #eagles #glider #gliderpilot #gliders
Captured on Google Earth and video on short finals into the Tumut airport in my #motorglider .

What amazing timing. The latest (2024) Google Earth/Maps satellite images capture Stuart and I on short final into Tumut runway 1 7 in NSW, and we had the video camera running at the same time. The Phoenix motorglider profile is clearly captured by the Google satellite picture. Well done to Stuart for finding this! You can see the image in Google Maps here: (switch to satellite view obviously!)...
Cockpit tour of the Phoenix Motorglider

Welcome inside for a detailed tour of the cockpit of the Phoenix motorglider and all the screens and controls. To regular followers - once again sorry for the poor audio quality but I have now found the source of the problem - electrical noise from the USB power controller - so audio should be much better in future videos. Thanks for your patience.
Chasing mountain wave at the Grampians soaring club wave camp in my Phoenix #motorglider
Переглядів 5823 місяці тому
The Grampians soaring club hold an annual wave camp, chasing the mountain wave lift off the local mountain range. Flying out of Ararat the locals have a great record of high flights, often reaching over 20,000ft and reportedly once around 32,000ft. This is amazing when you think the mountains are only around 3,000 ft above the plains. I flew across to Ararat under power and stayed in the clubs ...
Slope soaring on the Cathederal Ranges in the Phoenix motorglider
Переглядів 5686 місяців тому
Not the greatest of soaring days, but I was cruising (motoring) past the Cathederal ranges and thought I would see if the slope soaring was working. I think this was as much thermals being triggered as slope lift, but it's all fun. Another example of how the Phoenix gets you places you don't normally get to soar. I have driven past this range many times and imagined it would be great for ridge ...
A classic outback Aussie Pub Crawl up to Birdsville in a Phoenix touring motorglider.

Pooncarie on the Darling, William Creek and Lake Ayre, Birdsville , The Dig Tree, Camerons Corner, Tilpa on the Darling then home via Narromine and Tumut, this was a classic Aussie pub crawl to some of the most iconic country pubs in Australia. Touring with my friend Stuart we put the motor to good use, with almost no gliding, other than an attempt to ridge soar on big red! The Phoenix handled ...

This was our last full day in Burketown and our 3rd Morning Glory cloud in a row. Once again, this was was differnt; lots of following waves, a much gentler front face and only inland. It is still a stunning sight, surfing a 3,000ft wave for over 2 hours without an engine. Our first ride on a Morning Glory Cloud in a Phoenix Motorglider
Переглядів 23 тис.Рік тому
After years of planning and trying, and our 3 day flight up from Benalla, we waited 4 days in Burketown until we got our first Morning Glory wave cloud. It was worth the wait. The cloud formed up over the gulf out past Swears Island and travelled well inland. We flew nearly 290km and spent nearly 2.5hrs riding on the cloud. A fantastic first flight on this amazing cloud formation, and the weath...

Introduction to Flights of the Phoenix channel and the Phoenix motorglider
Incredibly cool! I wish that motorgliders counted towards single engine time, I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Where did you get the sunshade for your canopy?
Great cloud & a good video of the events, thanks!
Amazing stuff!
A glider is a very impressive aircraft except for the one fatal flaw, that it's doesn't have an engine so it's useless. U-15 is actually a great aircraft. It's a disservice to call it a motorglider. It's just a plane of good engineering. It should be more well known as a very good plane, not as a motorglider.
Great airplane (motorglider); May I ask the price of acquisition? Best regards.
Interesting. I didn't know you get multiple layers of lenticulars
Looking at it now, I am very annoyed we didn’t power up to the upper cloud to see what was happening. My thinking was it would be very weak, but I have since heard some people got up to them and gone on to 12,000+ ft. Grrrr.
@@FlightsofthePhoenix Next time. Having thought about it, I can understand how it might form. A weather map, temp height graph etc, for the day would also be interesting
I like the new sun shade! 🧢
Yeah, a new addition for this season north. Very nice on the sunny days.
WOW, that looks very impressive; what an amazing experience. 👍
Barry this is the second time you have been snapped by the Google cameras 😅
Thanks for posting. I hope you make more videos of you adventures this year!!
So many camera angles. How did you get the exterior shots?
They were taken with an Insta360 camera on a stick out the window. The camera takes a complete 360 degree video and you can extract what you want from it later.
@@FlightsofthePhoenix Wow. I'm going to look into that camera. Never seen anything like this video.
Absolutely magical. What a privilege it must be to get to surf this wave.
Great video Barry, what a great machine. Just a wee bit envious!
Great stuff Barry. Very intrigued by the Phoenix, looking forward to following your adventures.
Lovely and the Phoenix is an interesting plane. Even better glide than Risen but is it built for low speed? can it exceed 200km/h level flight? 300?
Vne (max allowed speed) is 220km/h ( 120 Kts ) which with the 100hp engine you can very easily bust in cruise. Stall is about 38kts (full flap), so it thermals very well.
What are the licence requirements for a motor glider in Australia?
I fly under the Gliding Federation of Australia with a Glider Pilot Certificate. You can fly under Recreational Aviation Australia but then you can’t turn the motor off. Both are sport pilot systems with numerous constraints but simpler operations.
Hah! I thought you were visiting Scotland! Nice video thanks!
Living the life!
I always love your videos! Please keep the coming 🙂I am surprised at the turning radius, she can turn on a dime
You can get it down to about a 350 ft radius turn when thermalling, so very tight. I have been having trouble with the audio on recent flights, but hope to have some more videos soon.
😂 are you the ufo everybody is talking about?
I don’t think so …. This was in Western Australia in April 2023.
Wow!
where i can buy one here in australia
The latest exciting news about the Phoenix is that the aircraft manufacturing has been taken over by JMB. It is not clear what this means for local sales, but they will be sold as a JMB Phoenix now.
Burketown looks cool and Savannah Lodge looks just loaded with cool character and excellent vibes. This wave cloud soaring experience was absolutely magical. I don’t understand how any human can possibly feel satisfied with life, if they don’t aviate. Cheers Brother 😎🎩♠️
I think my heart skipped a beat. Watching it from behind you, it looks like you're never going to touch down, the glide ratio of that bird must be amazing
Its rated at 30:1, but ground effect gives you a much longer run.
Thanks I'm also looking for a touring motor glider and your videos are very informative and also fun to watch. I hope one day you can also make one from the ground, showing us all the features of the airplane and your considerations for purchasing it and your experience (maintenance, upgrades, insurance & other costs) with it.
I was thinking about an introduction to the cockpit and the instruments, but I can do an outside intro too. It might take a while, so make sure you are subscribed!
good video

This is awesome!
That's the dream. So beautiful! Thank you for sharing this amazing moment.
Awesome video, I'd love to fly over a cloud like that at some point.
That's my old motor glider. What a great plane it is. I hope you love it.
Absolutely loving it. With many more adventures to come I hope.
nice videos!
Well jealous! Al we get here in Wales is rain...
Nice! I am wondering, why is the prop not feathered when you're gliding?
Yes, the prop was feathered! Not sure which shot you are talking about? The blade does have some twist and it is probably from the high angle of the view and the wide angle lens.
yeah wide field of view cameras make things look weird more often then not. I was talking about 1:16 @@FlightsofthePhoenix I'm currently working my SPL and doing the TMG after, can't wait.
Tremendous! Spectacular views what a flight
Epic!!
How did you get those close up outside pics?
Taken with an Insta360 One X 360 degree camera on a selfie stick.
Wow!!
So, you don't need a pilot's license or FAA medical to fly this? Just a glider certificate?
The rules change by country, but generally the medical requirements for a glider certificate are much simpler than a full pilots licence.
Crazy this video is not trending.
It is climbing... and your comments help thank!
That's my idea of. Incredible flight and capture!
So imagine encountering all that with no cloud to show its presence
I think that is what they call 'clear air turbulance'. There is a big gust of wind when it goes through, so you would not want to be landing!
Great video-thanks! Question: how did you video those external views in flight?
The outside shots are from an Insta360 One X 360 degree (Sherical) camera on a selfie stick out the window. The software makes the stick disapear!
@@FlightsofthePhoenix That is amazing! Thanks. 👍
That’s incredible! Good job!
Thx4sharing! We had one rolling over Munich, Bavaria a few years ago. But here they are rare like a 9-tail-cat. And of course I was not gliding it.
They do happen in lots of places. There was one in Turkey in this video i think - but they didn't realise what it was. ua-cam.com/video/N4ZuzBfQ5E4/v-deo.html
I've seen very similar formations in the middle of the Pacific on flights from Sydney to LA. 🇦🇺
They do occur anywhere the hunidity is high and there is a trigger, like a storm. I have seen them in Bass straight, and lots of times in satellite loops over the ocean. There was also a a big one photographed in the Great Australian Bight from a Virgin flight.
Spectacular stuff
Thats cool, 👍👍
Awesome experience
You neeed to tell those rodeo boys the landing on their heads isn't the idea.
