Stitch Along 4 of 4 (FB04) EPP Project Hanging Mobile - English Paper Piecing Skill-building Series
Does it help to spray a little water on the paper to pull the threads thru?
This project was glue-basted, so no pulling threads through.
Where do you get the scissor from? And the fabrics? Thank you
Just new to EPP, so i found this video very informative. One question i have is how often should you use a new needle?
I don't change needles often. Usually when it is so bent that I can no longer thread it easily is when I replace my needle.
Thank you for the Templates.xx
I purchased a punch & i use my junk mail and old holiday cards.
Love it!!
Can I still get it
I like the glue Method it will save me alot of time. Thank you for your videos
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.
This was one of the best English paper piecing videos I’ve seen so far. Thank you
Wow, thank you!
I'm new to EPP and so far, have simply experimented with shapes, threads and needles. I starred with 50 wt Aurifil, and thought I was doing pretty well... until I tried the 80 wt Deco-Bob. What a difference! My stitches nearly disappeared into the fabric and the seams feel thinner. At first it felt like I was trying to stitch with spiderweb, and I had terrible problems with tangling. When I started using thread conditioner, it felt much more manegable and I had almost no tangles. At that point I decided to try a different needle. At the advice of a lady from the quilt shop, I bought some tiny binding needles. They sewed nicely, but the eye was so small that I had real problems threading it. I switched to an Appliqué needle, which has a larger eye. I'm using the smallest one in the pack, which I think is size 10, which is working beautifully. Then I made one more change. I was finding that I kept dropping my needle, so I decided to see if I could simply tie that 80 wt thread to the needle itself. I threaded it, then tied two knots, leaving a 3-4-inch tail. Surprisingly, it went right through the fabric, not catching at all! My frustration level has completely disappeared. The thread barely shows, handles well without tangling, and I no longer lose the needle. All I have to do now is improve my basting skill. I started with a 2" hexie, moved to a 1" hexie, and now am working on a fairly complex star. I need to improve my glue basting at the ends of those long skinny points, and then I'll be ready to start a quilt! Thank you for your videos. I've watched several and found them quite helpful. I need you try changing the angle of my stitching to reduce hand strain. That's the kind of thing you can only learn from someone with experience. Thx again!
So glad to hear you are figuring out your path forward and making it work for you. Thank you so much for sharing your journey here. It's wonderful to read how you have progressed along!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
How thick is the paper?
You can use regular printer paper or medium weight cardstock. Either will work.

So lovely
Thank you!
I loved 5 the best
Thank you so much for this series. I’m just getting started and this was the perfect way to see if EPP is for me. I do like it and now I’ve learned the trick for threading a needle (only took 60 years for me to hear about this!) and also the quilter’s knot and now the different stitches. Thanks!
You are so welcome!
The polkadots help it stand out the others are a little busy
Thanks for the input!

Thanks for voting!
I liked numbers 3 and 5 the best.
Thank you!
I thought I knew about needles but having watched your video I realise I don't. Thank you for the excellent information. I have to admit that until now I just used the needle with the biggest eye as my eyesight is not so good
Glad it was helpful!
I am a new be to EPP and have learned so much from your videos. Thank you so much. Greatly appreciated 😊
You are so welcome!
So interesting and I love it. How great. Thank you so much.😊
You are so welcome!
You are incredible, this is wonderful information.
Thank you kindly!
Do use do useBOHIN needles sharps #9 works better good. Quilting I use BOHIN between big eye # 10. They tiny but work really well. I have use many different thread and needles. This gives me better info on buying in future. But so far BOHIN France needles are so easy thru the fabric. Thank for the info, am always up to better and easier ways to get the sewing done best results.
Good to know! Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it and it was helpful. :D
It looks very interesting, and I like different. I love the old stuff don’t get me wrong. I really love all kinds of quilts. I really love civil war quilts, hexagons, many, many others. New designs would be refreshing. How fun would that be. You go girl. 😊
Prayers are with you and your husband for sure. Hoping it will get better soon. Just stop and breathe as much as you can. It will get better. Bless you both.
Thanks so much
Love to see it. Would be nice to see you with the Gild. Very interesting. Yea that would be great. Congratulations that’s awesome. You deserve it. You are very creative person very well. Well put together..😊
Very helpful removing papers.😊
Thank you that is so cute , can’t wait to try this as well I love the flower and butterfly. Well done.😊
Thanks so much 😊
I have done all the basting by hand. What was I thinking, I don’t mind it , but it will be faster if I glue. So I will try it next time I do some hexagons. Which will be soon, I find it so relaxing. For a while, then I have go to another project for a break from the routine. I like doing hexagons when am T V or setting in a doctor’s office if am stitching them together. Just starting watching and I love it. You are really good at teaching, I can fellow with no problems. 😊
I use Aurifil 100 cotton 50/2 I’m not sure why I took a quilters recommendation. I only trouble I have is that it does catch on and curls up and it doesn’t stay straight very very well so I know what I’ve got to do now get an 80 white thread. Thanks for all your help. I do appreciate it very much.😊
Curves terrify me Janie!
Oh no! Rest assured, they aren't as bad as they seem.
I am a new member, and a "Before" Beginner EPP as I am just now doing research into what and how to EPP. Thus how I found your channel. It does not matter to me when a video is posted as long as it has the complete information for that video! I usually watch and re-watch a video as needed to learn what I went to the channel/video to learn. You are an excellent teacher and your videos are well edited!!
Welcome aboard!
Excellent tutorial! I need a needle threader too.
Glad it was helpful!
You are a great teacher
Thank you. :)
I don’t mind when information is from. Many UA-cam videos I watch can be from a year or more ago, on catch-up. Best wishes to you.
This is a a concise and very informative hand needle sewing tutorial or video. I wish I had had it many years ago. I have been quilting, mostly hand quilting for 40 yrs. There is not much I could add to this video of yours which is extremely well done. And I even enjoyed listening to the easy way you teach. I would recommend this video highly to anybody starting to do any kind of hand stitching which now is being called slow stitching, which I'm laughing at.... It's funny how they have to take something old and give it a new name to make it sound current... The only thing I would say is your sewing needle is your best friend for hand sewing and not too cheap out on buying good quality needles. The few cents or dollar that you would save will not compensate the aggravation you'll have with cheap needles that have burrs and snags and are badly made that you buy at the dollar store.. It could make or break your sewing experience. Especially if it's your first time... Thank you so much for making this wonderful video. I Have just found you and I am enjoying going through all of your videos. I mostly hand stitch even for quilting. Applique has been my favorite with spatterings of embroidery and beadwork added in for texture.... EPP has been my latest obsession And it fills my time in the evening when I'm tired after work, but still feel the need to do some stitching!... I Just have to say that you are fantastic. I will definitely be passing on your videos to others I know!🎉❤much Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. I'm so glad you found this video helpful! :D And thank you for sharing your wisdom here. I'm agree, having the right tools makes all the difference and needles are our main tool. So don't cheap out on them. Good advice @damarisrempel9147
Thank you so much for the free templates!!❤️👍
You are so welcome!
I’m not really into EPP. I have a current EPP quilt I’m making, and I enjoy the sewing, but I hate the whole basting/prep part of EPP. So many little papers and they Always get all bent up which makes them so tricky for me to reuse! I really do love the calm of hand stitching though, and have fallen in love with hand piecing (aka running stitch- no papers) and I find the EPP patterns work so well for hand piecing…. Hence why I watch so many of your videos 😅 Tonight I went down a rabbit hole with your snippet videos and I have already ordered some! I love improve piecing on my machine so much, and I think I’ll be able to use all my little Jen kingwell templates to make some fun scrappy little quilts. Thank you SO much for sharing all about this. I would really love it if you did more videos on the projects you make from your scrappy bags. Scrappy projects are definitely my favorite ❤
Glad you enjoy the videos. And I'm so happy you've found a way to make EPP pattern work for you (without papers). Happy stitching!
Awesomeness.. Beautymous... Amazing Janie... ❤️❤️🌹🌹👍✌️☮️
Thank you so much!
❤😊 absolutely gorgeous. Stunning! Great job 👍 beautiful ❤️
Thank you so much 😊
That's BEAUTIFUL!!
Thank you :D
I really appreciate your knowledge on using the glue sticks.....
Glad to help :D
Just discovered EPP few mos ago & find it addictive. Yes, give yourself 15 min of pure joy! It’s beautiful!
EPP is pure joy! I love it! :D
When im doing the hexies, im not looking for speedy ways, thats my slow stitching time. Glue belongs in my papercrafting supplies. I use only needle and thread to baste fabric around the paper. I dont even use.pins, i have wonder clips. Dollar stores also sell mini clips if you can't find the Wonder clips. I can pop the papers out once I've surrounded the pieces when piecing together. Gluing is an extra step i really don't need, let alone getting glued papers out. Oh, and then there is the detail that I can reuse the papers a couple times. 😏
Wonderful, @wendywilson1736! Those are all great reasons to thread baste. :D
I take a photo with my phone after I decide what arrangement I want. That way I can make sure the row stays in the right order.
Great tip!
Wow! What lovely evenly-spaced stitches you make! I started getting into quilting right before my kids were born and loved it, but that’s still on pause while I have littles. Bravo on a lovely piece. Im sure it will come together nicely. God bless you!
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much! I have been dreading the point when papers will need to come out.
You are so welcome!
Thank-you so much for the colouring page, especially! I have my flowers sewn together already, but it will help so much with designing the paths and the whole quilt layout!
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful!
