In this video, I walk through how to stack plates in a woodfiring. These plates were fired "raw" and unglazed.
How to throw and texture a large pottery bowl.
Переглядів 9744 роки тому
In this video I use about 8lbs of white stoneware clay to throw a large bowl. After walking through my technique to center a larger amount of clay, the exterior is textured with handmade tools and stamps from MKM. Because of the texture I must shape the bowl from the inside out.

Throwing and Assembling a Ceramic Flask - Time Lapse
Переглядів 9606 років тому
Throwning, Altering, and Assembling a pottery flask. The original raw footage was over an hour long. Music is "A Space in My Head" by Liam O'Brien's Faithless Followers (c) Andrew Linderman Pottery 2018
Those masonite bats are my favorite, also. Stored upright to dry and it reduces the warping almost to none at all. But when they do, the bats will tend to bow outward from the middle on one side. What I've found is you can correct even really bad warping using differential drying. First, thoroughly saturate the problem bat, then place it to dry upright next to a wall with enough room for air to get around both sides. Be sure the part that warps up is faced towards the wall. This is important. The more exposed side dries faster, which pulls the warp in the other direction. It should now be very flat again. I've maintained the same batch of bats for years this way.
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
The eminent Bernard Leach describes this in his book, but this is the first time I have seen it done. Thank you.
this is great, for a newbie starting to go big, a guide like this is perfect. thanks for sharing. thanks x
Glad it was helpful! Let me know what you'd like to see in any new videos!
Plea see e don't black out screen. We like to see full lesson view. Thanks for teaching!
thank you! i never really understood why the word compression is used, i feel like i'm low key wedging when i'm setting the bottom of the pot
compression... just a really big misnomer...
I always somehow pull the handle off when I’m pulling. Maybe I’m using too much force. I’ll try this today thanks for the vid
It can also pull off if you're trapping an airpocket between the handle lug and mug or if the edges are well adhered.
And also it was ME!! 😊I’m the one who reached out! 👏🫶🙏
Nice technique. Shape turned out great.love to see it glazed.
Great explanation. Lovely shape mugs and handles. I’ve seen it also attached and pulled from the bottom up. So you don’t add any coils on the handle it seems. No problems with cracking?
The key to avoiding cracking is attaching pieces as close to the same water content as possible. If this isn't possible, then allowing the water to homogenize while covered, then pushing the attachment back together with a silicone shaper or wooden stylus works really well.
Thank you sooo much Andrew! I appreciate it!
You’re very welcome Kim! Sorry it took so long to get it uploaded😅😂
Great video! Nice that your dog gets to join you in your studio.

I was very confused by the title and thumbnail but now it makes perfect sense. Very cool and fun to watch!
Not sure how the algorithm sent me your way, but it was fun to watch. Always amazing how a talented artist makes hard skills look easy!
How did I end up here? Looks like a nice plate though.
Another great video with clear explanations. Thank you n
Super clear teaching, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
So much helpful tips, thanks for this. Really love your stuff man.
Great video. I appreciate your demoing some of Troy’s tools. I bought a few of the ribs based on an earlier video you made and like to see how others are using them. They are very nice tools.
Awesome! Thank you! Troy does make some of the highest quality ribs and brushes out there.
Andrew! Haven't seen you since Periscope! *waves*
waves back at you! Those were the days
Love this mug, will try it! I like throwing, but this looks very slow, creative and relaxing. Does the handle stay attached without using any slip?
I usually "wet and scratch" which creates slip on the attachment surface, and I don't have issues with cracking. That being said, some clays are much less forgiving. When I make with porcelain for example, I will get the attachments done a bit wetter, and then let them set together wrapped and dry a bit more slowly.
Great video. Love your clear explanations of hand movement, angles and pressures etc.. Very helpful. Thank you. :)
Thanks! Let me know if there are any other videos you’d like to see!
Thanks. I’ll think about it.
Great video thanks for sharing!
Very nice Wheel Controller... what Wheel are you using?
It's an older model Brent
No jugstick in order form
I just looked on the continental clay web page and they have discontinued them…

I think Xiem tools make some similarish tools. I'm going to be having some made for me to sell.@@jackiemorrison2661
Very nice.
Great tip on using a growing stick. Thanks!
gorgeous!!
Clever using the groove between your fingers as the fulcrum
Wow! I love your mug! Thanks for introducing me and others to this method. I'm kind of bored of the wheel and love carving, so this looks fun to try. I'm sure mine won't look as cool as yours, though 😂. Thank you for sharing your take on this technique. I personally love what you did with the handle!
Thanks! Enjoy trying a new technique!
Thank you! This is exactly what I've been looking for!
I really like your style.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Nice! Your videos should be seen by more watchers. May I repost your channel without changing anything on the clean platform named Ganjing World? Thank you!
please do not. Any sharing of my content should be cited with links to the original or my website.
So helpful, thank you!
O
Thanks that’s great - I’m new at some of this, throwing stick 👍🏻 you did an amazing job - looks beautiful and so quickly 🙋🏻♀️😍🦋
You’re welcome 😊
Very good video, thank you, nice pots!
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful!
Great intro to Kurinuki! Thank you.
This is so awesome!!!
"Gord-geous" pot! haha Cool video
Thanks!
Curious to know why you didn't get to the wall thinness/thickness on day one, but waited to do it on day two with the knife? Thanks!!
The clay is really soft and fresh. In a dryer/warmer climate you could probably just wait a few hours.
*waves* great video, very helpful thank you!
Amazing !
Wonderful, thank you for sharing it.
Is this ceramic paste?
Nope. Regular commercial clay. This body is fairly groggy (lots of grit)
Andrew Linderman thank u 🙏🏻 He needs an oven, right?
Wow! I love this technique, and I love the foot that you added for this. I've seen these type of cups before and assumed it was done on the wheel. I have a wheel but beginner / hoping to self-teach so this is a great introduction to starting to make pottery.
Thanks Elena! If there’s something specific you’d like to see, esp. as a beginner, let me know!!!
Me ha fascinado esta pieza, muy sencilla y expresiva.
Hi Andrew, how would a person go about making a plate with this technique? I love this
I haven't tried a plate, but you'd just need to start with a larger piece of clay and make sure it dries VERY SLOWLY and EVENLY
What is this crazy song? I love it! Great how to video, too.
Thanks! The song is “A Space in My Head” by Liam O’Brien.
