Early modern English loanwords (part 2)

Early modern English loanwords. Many of Shakespeare’s specific uses reflect the general stylistic characteristics of Latin in English that were mentioned in the previous video-talk. For example, the fact that Latin loanwords tended to be polysyllabic expanded Shakespeare’s metrical possibilities. An English or Anglo-Saxon word could be swapped for a Latin loanword of similar meaning but with ex...
Early Modern English loanwords (part 1)

Early Modern English loanwords Shakespeare’s time was when English people were borrowing (copying) words from other languages at a phenomenal rate. Latin was the language that was being most borrowed, with French not far behind, and a few other languages trailing behind that. Latin, in a number of respects was the big issue of the day, not least because it has very different characteristics fro...
Shakespeare's language // What does the label “Shakespeare’s language” mean to you?

What is “Shakespeare’s language”? What does that label mean exactly? As a first step, we need to distinguish it from another label: “Shakespearian English”, a label that has a much broader application (roughly, any kind of English from around Shakespeare’s time).
What does the label “Shakespeare’s language” mean? What does “Shakespearian English” mean?
Переглядів 22 години тому
Let us consider two labels Shakespearean English and Shakespeare's language. These labels are usually used for the same thing- - the language produced by Shakespeare. I'm not going to use the term Shakespearean English because it is less precise. Sometimes it is used not just for the English produced by Shakespeare, but the English of Shakespeare's time, much like Elizabethan English is regular...
Shakespeare's linguistics: “Early Modern English” (or EME) no standardised English at that time
Переглядів 12 години тому
Shakespeare wrote during the early modern English period, often abbreviated as “Early Modern English” (or EME). Linguists and historians generally define this period as spanning from 1450 to 1750, though dates can vary slightly. The start of this era is often linked to significant events like the advent of printing, with William Caxton establishing his press in 1476. The period’s end is sometim...

Annotation usually refers to linguistic information encoded in a corpus - however, the encoding is achieved using a mark-up language. Is it just a collection of any old words? Well, yes and no. It’s certainly a collection of words. We need some type of very large, typically, collection of words stored on a computer, so that we can rapidly and reliably sear...

Q: What is critical thinking? A: Critical thinking is the process of applying logic and reasoning to our thoughts. It means not just accepting everything we see or hear as truth, but questioning and seeking evidence to form a well-informed opinion. Critical thinkers are open to changing their views when presented with new, compelling evidence. Q: Why is critical thinking important? A: Critical thinking has played a major role in many world-changing developments, such as the discovery of penicillin, the fight for women's rights, civil rights movements, and technological advances like mobile phones and the internet. Without people questioning the status quo, many of these advancements wouldn't have happened. Q: Can you give an example of what happens without critical thinking? A: Imagine going to the dentist and being told your toothache is caused by worms in your teeth, something that people once believed. Today, we know that cavities are caused by bacteria producing acids. Without critical thinking and scientific research, we might still believe the old myths and not have developed effective treatments for dental problems. Q: How does critical thinking affect our lives? A: Critical thinking helps us make better decisions by questioning existing beliefs and seeking evidence. It encourages curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge, which leads to personal growth and societal progress.

The tactics used in gaslighting include •Pretending not to understand what their partner is talking about or refuse to listen •Questioning their memories of events •Suggesting that their partner is imagining things •Trivialising their feelings to make them feel that they are making a fuss •Suggesting that their partner is making things up Gaslighting can be experienced by both males and females. In Men and boys’ experiences of domestic abuse, located at the bottom of the page under downloads, a survey of men and boys 71% stated they had their ‘memory questioned or been told they were imagining things they knew to be true’ by an abusive partner.

  • @ShetlandNeurodiversityProject

Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse often used in IPVA as part of coercive control. The abuser uses psychological manipulation to make the victim question their reality and often their sanity. It is a very insidious form of abuse. The term ‘gaslight’ originates from the 1938 stage play and subsequent 1944 film Gaslight starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer as a husband and wife. Boyer’s character brings his wife to London to live in a house where her aunt was violently murdered, isolating her from all sources of support. Over time he starts to move things around the house and the gaslights regularly dim without explanation which makes her doubt her sanity. What Bergman’s character doesn’t know is that her new husband is actually her aunt’s murderer and is manipulating her in order to take control of her finances. The term ‘Gaslighting’ was born. In IPVA gaslighting tends to happen slowly and is used to undermine the victim. It is very disorientating and a very effective way for the perpetrator to gain control as their victim gradually becomes anxious, depressed and more dependent on them.
