Textile arts need a lot more recognition and promotion. I'm glad this museum exists. The challenge is that they've suffered being treated as the least respected of the so-called "minor / applied / decorative arts" for a very long time in the West. I'm not entirely convinced the little boost fiber arts got from the 1970s and 1980s movements like the Pattern and Decoration group or the numerous Feminist Art collectives did it all that many favors either. I hate admitting this, but .... postmodernist aesthetics are a bit garish, however exciting and amusing they once seemed. I wonder if the fiber arts suffer a little, as well, from the intricacy of its craft. All the "decorative arts" can have this problem, obviously. What's marquetry if not a ridiculously intricate craft, after all? But the fiber arts - at least everything that falls under needlework and string work - are all about the stitch and patterns. It's almost destined to have a bit of a "insider's craft" problem when it comes to getting wider appreciation and understanding. Perhaps promoting these arts will bring innovation that either has a more dynamic relationship with the intellectual currents of the art world - or can speak to our image-oriented, screen-obsessed culture.

Excellent presentation of Melody's exquisite art.

This exhibit is amazing, not only for the composition of light and dark creating landscapes but the embroidery detail which brings it to life. Viewing the pieces through the lens gives you an idea of the complexity of the work in detail which is wonderful in that you can stop the video and see every thread applied to the work. Don't miss this exhibit. Thank you Visions for allowing the work of Melody Money to be seen via UA-cam.
