Crossing Australia on foot - Melbourne to Cape York - 144 days - 5000km - Solo & unsupported
Hi there!
This is a documentation about my walk across Australia in 2019.
I did not plan to hike the length of Australia, but different circumstances changed my plan. I had actually planned to hike the 5330km long Bicentennial National trail, which goes from Cooktown to Healsville.
However, first i walked the Great North walk (Sydney-Newcasle-250km), then 450km on the Australian Alps walking track before i got stopped by bushfires. After a couple of weeks in Melbourne i started at St Kilda Beach, followed the Great dividing range and made it to the Tip. Afterwards i flew from Cairns to Hobart,Tasmania and hiked there around 300km.
I could tell so many more stories, but i did not take any pictures or clips at the time i was enjoying the company of new friends. I‘m glad about every encounter i had before, along and after the trail.
Thanks sooo much again to all the people i met!!
I would not recommend to cross the country, if you just do it for the trail, but if you want to explore a gnarly backcountry and meet some of the loveliest people on earth…Do it!
Happy Hiking all!
Peace,
Teddy
Ps: Stay tuned for my next adventure…

Australian Alpine Walking Track 2019 (AAWT)
The Australian alpine walking track, what a beautiful trail on the other side of the world. I started in Tharwa and hiked south bound. Most of the people hike it north bound (slightly easier), but it was just more convenient to travel to Canberra and i haven’t planned anything anyway. Resupplying seems like a big part of the planning, but to be honest it was so easy to find a hitch into Jindaby...
Solo Thru-Hike Norge Pa Langs 2017
Norge Pa Langs - The length of Norway A 2700Km unmarked trail from the bottom to the top of Norway, the Northcape. This trail is really something special, as there is no certain route given. But the Norwegian trail system is just awesome and gives you so many options. So it was pretty easy to plan from day to day, rather than planning the whole route. Compared to New Zealand, it was definitely ...
Great effort and video Teddy. Any chance i can get in contact and ask a few questions about logistics on the cape york leg?
Jo Teddy hast du zufällig eine Instagram Account
The snake at the start was a black backed tiger snake. And yes it's deadly.
Been here my whole life and you've seen and experienced more of the countryside than I have, I envy that. At least for me, definitely some pretty hard trekking on those rough trails. The people you mentioned around the 26min mark reminds me of when my brothers and I used to go camping here in NSW, middle of nowhere, no towns or people to be seen anywhere, special times. Glad to hear you stumbled upon some great people along your journey and the Aussie spirit in people is still kicking strong outside the big cities. Good on ya mate and cheers for sharing your memories. 😎
This is amazing. I traveled in a giant loop through the center of Australia to the tip of cape york and down the east coast around 2010, as a 4x4 support vehicle for 3 friends who did it on motocross bikes. It was a fantastic adventure. I love hiking too (i live in the Blue Mountains, its a shame you didn't see the beauty of it all... and the canyons! so many amazing canyons) but i've never thought about hiking.... for weeks? or longer! but i think i would love it. I need to do this now, nothing as long as you've done, but something like a month. You've put a plan in my head that i never had before!
Great video. Planning to hike solo (south to north direction wise). Is there a chance I can uplink and get contacts for people like Michael for planning? Thanks! 😊
Hi, I'm toying with the idea also. Did you do the walk, or are youstill planning?
Thanks from the uk, was in oz 2006 brought back memories,
This is the dream
Just a goal 😉
Great video question you think i can do that on bike and where can i get the full route gpx cheers
Thank you! Sure, it‘s actually easier..check out Bicentennial national trail and add the development road to the top 😊 let me know if you have questions…cheers
@@teddymetzler2714 thanks for sure i have question like what the longest distance between water resupplies and food supply distance
@@Bikepacking puhh i think the longest without water was like 100-120km, but i also consider dirty paddles as water resource. The longest inbetween towns was like 700km
@@teddymetzler2714 great info man
Thanks for the video!!!
Amazing video. Do you think the path able to be done with a mountain bike?
Thank you! Sure, it‘s actually easier..check out Bicentennial national trail and add the development road to the top 😊 let me know if you have questions…cheers
Thank you you making the video. It highlights how run down and neglected and over looked the trail is. This trail has the potential to be amazing like other trails in other countries. What an amazing effort you made to complete the journey. Very inspirational.
Thanks mate, yeah it has the potential but i guess its even for experienced hikers to difficult…cities are too far apart, water is rare and you have to take a lot care about wildlife…also very rewarding 🎉
Hi teddy Congratulations on completing your amazing Thru hike of Australia , a amazing achievement. It’s a fantastic way to live life 👍👍 All the best for your next adventure Jon
Thanks mate!! 🎉
Well done, an outstanding effort!
Thanks mate! 🎉
Definitely outstanding work! Beautiful colors and shots. Well done my friend!
Thanks mate! Appreciate it!:)
Magic Teddy 🧙🪄
Thanks so much bro! 😘
Thanks for sharing, this was awesome. Was looking at the feasibility of doing this myself once everything is back to normal in the world. It looks amazing. Was there a lot of time spent walking through water? Not something I have a lot of experience of, how do you deal with the cold afterwards? I normally wear boots when it is rocky but maybe I need to carry some trail runners as well.
Please continue it if you can. Great stuff.
Thanks mate, i will! :) gonna cross europe this year...
Nice work mate, what did you use to film this? GoPro?
I live in Southern Norway, and have been kinda envious of the Americans who have the Appalacian Trail, CDT, and the PCT - but taking on Norway like this would seem like a pretty nice alternative. I have been thinking about walking "Siddhis-stien" (about 400km from Oslo to Stavanger) this summer - but anything more than an overnighter kinda seems like a big project to me, so all this is probaly just a bad/terrible case of "delusions of grandeur" XD
Come back and walk the bit from Mt. Speculation to Mt.McDonald and The Baw Baw plateau. Those are amazing sections of the AAWT.
Hi. Great trip. It was nice to see places I know, because I hiked Nordkalottleden last summer. Norge på langs is my future dream 👍
Hey :) thank you! Nordkalottleden is my fav trail so far...
The area on your map when the fire was is now completely decimated :( We have had massive wildfires at the end of 2019 and over 6MILLION ( and counting) Hectares of land has been lost, the area you showed is a big portion of that. Very sad, Loved your video by the way. I hope you get to complete it one day.
great video, man! i hoping to walk the same walk this summer. greetings from Norway:)
benjamin bjørklund thanks buddy! Stay safe and let me know if you need sone help. :)
@@teddymetzler2714 Thanks man! sure will :)
hi did you have any trouble finding water on the first section tharwa to kiandra?
Sharndor hi :) nope not a problem at all. Cotter river is a sweet camp spot with plenty of cute wallabies
Hey Teddy, I'm planning to do the AAWT next year along the North way, was great to see some of the views from someone going the other way. I used to live in Bright and hope you get to walk along the rest of the track sometime. Nice video mate.
Good onya Teddy, shame you couldn't make it all the way but you got the best of best of the AAWT
Awesome!
Warum rennst du immer :D
Hey Teddy :) Viele Grüße von den beiden deutschen Jungs aus Camp Crusty. Wir lieben deine Videos und feiern dich ! Alles Gute und Gottes Segen für deine weiteren Abenteuer ! ;) You are a big motivation and inspiration!
Aaron-luis Köhn hey jungs!! Vielen vielen dank!
really cool how easy was ressuplying in the northern parts? :)
Thats amazing. I´m planning the same hike in a few years. My kids have to be old enough, so they can be without their father a few months :-) Two questions: How heavy was your backpack? and how much food did you pack (for how many days). Thank you and a great job.
:) Thank you! my backpack has a base weight of 18kg and i take around 1,2-1,5Kg food per day, so for a week it`s around 30Kg. I´ve never had to take more than 10 days. Food supply is pretty easy in Norway, especially if you plan your own route.
Thank you Teddy. Did you use real food or freezedried food? I hope to have a baseweight around 15 kg and bring maybe 1,2 kg of food and 2 liters of water pr day. For a week i will end up with max. 25,5 kg.
Hallo Teddy, tolle Tour.
hey Teddy. great video:) im also going to walk "norge på langs" - you really inspired me! I have a couple of questions.... how did you resupply and what was the challenges- especially in northern norway where there are few supermarkets. how many days worth of food did you usually cary? sometimes people leave food in the DNT huts and you can buy food there- is it reliable? where there all ways something to eat? any gear recommendations what is essential to bring? and any advise in general:)
Hey :) thank you very much! Seems like you got a couple questions..if you want you can hit me up on skype and we can have chat. :) name: teddy.metzler
I am also kind of wondering the same things. Planning on hiking it next year.
Jellepunx how can i help you? :)
Hey Teddy i also have got more then a couple of questions for you haha. Is it okay if i add you on Skype also?
yea sure, no prob :)
what gear did you pack sleeping wise? what rating bag ? Fantastic job by the way, i'm looking at doing the walk from sweden to trondheim from beginning of may in to june
Hey :) Thank you! I just use a +5 synthetic fibre sleeping bag and a 2,5cm thermo matt. It`s comfortable down to -5 C ...are you gonna hike or ski? it might be still really snowy..
I plan to hike my bags 0 degree to -5 so that's good news thanks I'm watching this again having hiked all winter just getting back to training 5 miles a day I want to build up to 10 miles a day my bags 12.4 kilos currently 4 days food 1.5 liters of water
Hello Teddy, Great vid! Did you walk thru the Nordkapp tunnel?
Hey :) THank you! yes i did and it was freezing cold but not dangerous or anything...Are you thinking to do it? The section before the tunnel is stunning and really worth a hike!
Hey Teddy, I am going to hike the part from Kautokeino to Nordkapp this year. I heard that it is an option to wait for a bus before the tunnel but if it's possible by foot I will walk it. Thankts for the reply!
Unbelivable
i'm impressed !
Michel de Hamer thank you! :)
Hey Teddy. congratulation for your hike and this great experience. the breadoven was fantastic ;) Happy hiking to you too
