A vast number of these were sold in the oil exploration industry which is why you see so many wrecked examples on ebay. They lived a hard life on the wrists of people doing very hard work. The modest size of 38mm is just what was needed. Because of the comparatively modest cost, they were seen as disposable. These days, it's Casio G-Shocks and they're going the same way.

My first luxury watch was just after graduation with an BSEE degree (1978). Prior to that, I had a Bulova Accutron, a super nice watch. In 1981, I bought a Rolex Oyster Perpetual, my first luxury watch. It was great, and then I saw my Breitling Chronomat circa 2002. I gave my Rolex to my nephew, who proceeded to destroy it with carelessness and no service. That taught me a big lesson. My Chronomat is gold and steel and has served me for 22 years. With service every 8-10 years, it has never failed me and looks great on my wrist. I have one dial and some miscellaneous parts in a plastic bag from service. I recently bought an Omega Aqua Terra - again, a beautiful, elegant watch. Both have beautiful blue dials, and I interchange them monthly. Again, nobody really notices or they just don't say anything. Recently I was traveling cross country and took a ferry from Port Bolivar in Texas to Galveston island. I was at the bar in a fancy restaurant, and a gentleman walked in with his date. I noticed his watch and asked to see it. He readily took it off his wrist and handed it over. He also asked to see my recently serviced Chronomat. His was a beautiful Tag Heuer Carrera with black dial. We were both startled by our watches, and he thought my Breitling was almost new. His date mentioned that she liked my watch better. It was probably because of the gold bezel and partial gold bracelet. I'll never give away my Breitling Chronomat.

I know this is a clone but I’d imagine it is an exact replica and takes the same amount of skill to dismantle. That being said thank you for uploading. I have a question. I recently purchased this same watch and the gold plating on the stem crown has faded and I want get it replated. Does the movement have to be fully disassembled to remove the stem? Or is there an easier way? Either way I’ll be taking it to a watch maker to have them do the word. All the best!
