The Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative
Приєднався 16 сер 2019
The mission of the Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights is to advance the cause of justice through scholarship, civic dialogue, and public engagement. To that end, the Holder Initiative was launched in 2017 with the "American Voter Project," a series of high-profile events focused on challenges to the American electoral system. This series brings together leading scholars, politicians, journalists, activists, artists, students, and community members to discuss key issues that influence American voting today. In Spring 2019, the Holder Initiative launched a fireside chat series designed to examine systemic racial injustice and inequality in the US, and to address areas of criminal justice reform.
"The Stadium": A Conversation with Frank A. Guridy
Join Frank A. Guridy (Dr. Kenneth and Kareitha Forde Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies and Professor of History; Executive Director of the Holder Initiative), Amira Rose Davis (Assistant Professor and Harrington Faculty Fellow in African and African Diaspora Studies, University of Texas at Austin), and Dave Zirin (author, filmmaker, and sports editor at The Nation) as they discuss Professor Guridy's new book, The Stadium: An American History of Politics, Protest, and Play.
About The Stadium
The “deep and impactful” story of the American stadium (Howard Bryant, author of Full Dissidence)-from the first wooden ballparks to today’s glass and steel mega-arenas-revealing how it has made, and remade, American life.
Stadiums are monuments to recreation, sports, and pleasure. Yet from the earliest ballparks to the present, stadiums have also functioned as public squares. Politicians have used them to cultivate loyalty to the status quo, while activists and athletes have used them for anti-fascist rallies, Black Power demonstrations, feminist protests, and much more.
In this book, historian Frank Guridy recounts the contested history of play, protest, and politics in American stadiums. From the beginning, stadiums were political, as elites turned games into celebrations of war, banned women from the press box, and enforced racial segregation. By the 1920s, they also became important sites of protest as activists increasingly occupied the stadium floor to challenge racism, sexism, homophobia, fascism, and more. Following the rise of the corporatized stadium in the 1990s, this complex history was largely forgotten. But today’s athlete-activists, like Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinoe, belong to a powerful tradition in which the stadium is as much an arena of protest as a palace of pleasure.
Moving between the field, the press box, and the locker room, this book recovers the hidden history of the stadium and its important role in the struggle for justice in America.

American Voter Project: Looking Ahead to the 2024 Elections

Voting is fundamental to democracy, but American trust in “one person, one vote” has been compromised in recent years by Electoral College outcomes, allegations of voter suppression and voter fraud, and gerrymandering of congressional district boundaries. Looking ahead to the 2024 elections, electoral politics and voter mobilization are integral to that conversation. For this installment of the...

American Voter Project: The Mueller Investigation
So, what do these people say now that Trump won with 313 electoral votes and an extra 2.25 million popular votes? They ran on "Treat to Democracy" and the majority of voters ACTUALLY VOTED. Blame Trump? Blame the 77,167,889 voters?
The GOP did get the popular vote by over 4 points on the house. Biden did make a possibly illegal promise to pay for student loans which affected elections even if its struck down. It is noted that MSNBC is heavily drawing from the progressive Union Seminary where Raphael Warnock hails from. Classes coming up there include 'imagine no religon' and 'the Bible beyond humans" and will practivce neo paganism at events like thanking the land and calling on nature spirits and they are not representative of orthodox Chrsitan views but MSNBC pretends they somehow speak authotitatively on the Bible. since liberation theology is more to their political likings.
One stange thing happening is MSNBC is painting abortion rights as a 'White Christian Nationalism" issue where all the original civil rights leaders wre very much pro life. When they say most Catholics or most Pentacostals voted for Obama perhaps there is an ethical confusion between morals (prescriptive and what ought to be) and morrays (prescriptive and what is) . Certainly the heads of the Pentacostal and Catholic churches are pro life. They would not agree with th e MSNBC tact that it's only a concern of "white Christian Nationalism". Reality is abortion through the full nine months as the Democtratic party normalizes. It would be radical from a European view which generally doen't allow abortion after first trimester.
These are some inspirational brothers. Thank you for this discussion.
