Urban Trinity: The Story of Catholic Philadelphia
I am Catholic. I attended St. John Cantius in Bridesburg until 1992, Nazareth Academy until 1996, and Chestnut Hill College until 1998.
I'm amazed that this video says it was uploaded 8 years ago but there are only 61 comments. Public interest really shows that what was in that wonderful video is no longer alive. I graduated from Nativity BVM in Port Richmond in 1977 and North Catholic in 1981. This video brought back many great memories.
My maternal side is from Swampoodle in North Philly. My grandmother would look at St. Columba Church, Bless herself, and then cross Judson Street. No matter how many times a day she went out, she did the sign of the cross.
I went to Our Lady OF Lourdes until med 3rd grade, 1965. I loved living there.
Thanks for creating this video about St. John Neumann, patron saint of our school. HIs life story is inspiring and I am pleased that you have a short video which I can discuss with students in my art and/or religion classes. I especially enjoy viewing the image of St. John Neumann in mosaic tile. Is the artwork in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, or elsewhere? And do you know who created it?

What the Church do for this, ua-cam.com/users/shortshxVPrjL050g?feature=share4?.
John Neumann was born in Bohemia (Czech Republic) Went to seminary in Budweis Bohemia, in 1811, ordained a priest in New York City1836. He joined the Redemptorists in 1842. He became a Bishop in 1852. Bishop John Neumann died suddenly 0n January 5, 1860.
I love that church, so close to West Washington Square where I spent several years. I miss that place.
The Catholics didn’t take over Philadelphia…the Protestants abandoned it.
Why is the Catholic Church so right wing, fascist?
That was a great documentary on the history. Well done !
This video brings back old memories when being Catholic meant a lot more than just a name. Back in the day, before Vatican II when you said "I am a Roman Catholic" people automatically respected or hated you now things are different. I'm 76 and have seen it all.
How sad that Fr. James Martin was used for this clip!
How times have changed! Now the Democratic party is far left. Late term abortion, pro gay, pro transgender, etc...
I remember watching your videos. We really need your program back!
They're on FORMED. :) I hope you can see them there!
Catholic schools and church is dying in my hometown.
That's because nobody's proud to be Catholic anymore.
There will probably never be an Phila. Archbishop who's a cardinal again. That's proof of how unimportant Catholicism is in the Phila. area today.

The documentary accuses Catholics of racism but really it was about ethnic people wanting to protect themselves. Ethnic groups each had their own neighborhoods and they didn't like it when different ethnic groups impinged on their territory. The european ethnic Catholic groups were like that with each other - they got into conflicts with each other - and that attitude wasn't called racism except when blacks were involved. The news media labeled Catholic ethnic groups as white to accuse them of racism.
Hello! Here’s a little something for fun: ua-cam.com/video/YfVjB6c5CxQ/v-deo.html
Growing up it was Priest. Today it's scientist. In reality it's all politics.
The documentary does not mention the millions if not billions of dollars that Catholic schools have saved the city and the state since their inception. It does not give credit to the Catholic school sisters, teachers and parents who made that happen. The documentary does not give Cardinal Dougherty credit for standing up against institutional Anti-Catholicism and Catholic bigotry thus his being integral in Catholics ascending in the larger society. The tone of the documentary is that it was produced mostly by baby-boomer lapsed Catholics.
How anyone could think that Italians don't practice "real Catholicism" is beyond me. Rome is in Italy, the church has as its liturgical language the ancient Italian language of Latin, and if anything, it would be the groups from the fringes of the Catholic world which diverged from the real practices.
Well said. Lots of Irish Catholics were rural racists. Religion was as much about societal control as it was spiritual.
This reminds me of my Grandmother...she has been a practicing Catholic all her life. I'm myself practice and believe in Mother worship Shaktism, of Sanatan Dharma. But this is amazing.
Who here for theology?
Mmmhmm
we are now in my late sixties I amstill coming up against cold in the winter most of my money going to medical expenses wish I could get oil to heat my house
Great documentary John Dougherty MBS 1967
In the late fifties I attended St. Philip's Neri school and did one year at St. Stanislaus. I am seventy now and I enjoyed this documentary so much. Thank you. Long live the Catholic Church.
My favorite saint. He is responsible for the Catholic faith of my Italian grandparents and my irish grandparents. I love him and thank him everyday of my life. I thank him for the faith he imparted to me as a little child. I visit him lying in his glass coffin every time I visit my Philadelphia where I was born and brought up to love my True Catholic Faith. I was taught by the order of nuns he brought over from Europe and I loved them day, along with his Redemptorist priests. I know someday I will be with him again in Heaven. Deo Gratias!
Boa noite! Amo histórias em geral ! São nossas "raízes". Belo Horizonte, MG, Brasil.
I wonder how the victims of molester priests would view this idolized view of Philadelphia Catholisisim? See the web site “Bad priests of Philadelphia”. Four of them taught at Roman Catholic High School when I attended there in the ‘60s. The church hierarchy ignored their crimes and failed to protect us.
Having stayed in a homeless shelter ran by Catholic Social Services in Philadelphia for a couple years, I can say for a fact money and donations are skimmed off at every level of the organization. First red flag was the place is ran by more muslims than Catholics. From there I've seen how the staff "processes" the toiletries, clothes, and food while having to "work" or do "chores" in order to stay there. Not one employee buys shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste,or any other basic toiletries, if they need it they take it. Having done chores handing out clothes and offering showers I seen first hand the staff coming down every day to see what new clothes came in. There was certain closet where they would keep the "good" designer clothes that no one was allowed to pick from. I could tell numerous stories. It's just sad that this is nothing but fraud from the top down and this shelter is considered the best in Philly. All I could suggest for people to donate directly to the homeless and stop allowing these "charities" pilfer the donations all while being paid to do it. This year I personally handed out $1000 to individuals in the city on Christmas eve. I get it people don't like giving out money but who are we to decide what people need or want if you are giving without judgements or prejudice. If it genuinely comes from your heart and you want to help do it without bias. This and every other charity out there are scams.
Reminds me of the all the "Christian" non profits that are ran by MS13 at the botder that kid are being smuggled through at the border to replenish Democrat city voter ranks.
Thank you. St John Neuman was a most impressive figure. "Saints are men who have freed themselves from the world of matter and who have overcome sin. They live in the world but are not of it, their thoughts being continually in the world of the spirit." ~ Baha'i Faith
Philadelphia is one of the dirtiest, ugliest and most violent cities on the planet. As a European I can’t believe this is America. It’s more like a third world city. Sadly it’s not Catholic or Protestant it’s pagan.
Michael Hrisca is it? Where do you live?
Leave our little city alone.
You obviously didnt do any reaserch before making an uneducated, ignorant, and biased opinion. Philadelphia is one of the greatest cities in the world for many reasons, one being that it was the original capital of the United States when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Also, other cities like New York have much worse issues with poverty, rat infestations, and other horrible things that aren't mentioned much. Do some research before jumping to conclusions.
Excellent documentary.
