8 Days of Lisbon Street Photography w/ the Fuji X-T5

    Until one learns to photograph their own neighborhood as a world class destination, photography will always ruin your travels. Otherwise, one is nothing more than yet another UA-cam photographer chasing likes. The same can be said of wedding photographers. Always chasing the destination wedding. Leaving money on the table for the rest of us in the local market.

    • @gunairy
      @gunairy Місяць тому

      I agree, I’m still learning that first part for sure, though I don’t really live in any one place so I’ve been incredibly spoiled. One of my biggest fears is that I’m too dependent on having all of these amazing places at my fingertips and I would be nothing without that crutch to lean on. It’s a long journey but it’s can always be an exciting one.

      @@gunairy It doesn't matter where home is, the sentiment still applies. Because if I can't photograph my hotel or AirBNB as I would what's outside, I'm right back in square one. It's the same as having too much gear. As they say, limitation fosters creativity. Look at Jurassic Park. Severely limited by early CGI at the time, yet, it has become one of, if not the best movie to incorporate CGI to this day.

      @@thedrunkweddingphotographer Fair point! And traveling light too. I'd rather have 1-2 lenses than 10 any day of the week. Photographing the hotel or AirBnB as you would outside reminds me of Greg Girard's work. @@gunairy Ain't even gong lie, I don't know who that is. I don't follow photographers. Outside of Ansel Adams, I'm oblivious. I follow chefs and leather makers. Took a look though, very good work. Reminds me of daily life in the hoods of Mexico where I'm from. One of the few places left untouched by the "influencers" on this platform. But yes, Girard proves the point of photographing one's mundane neighborhood because that's what stands the test of time. That's what will set you apart. Took a LONG time for me to learn that.

    i use it on my x-t3 for multiple years now. I'm not crazy about the focal length tbh. It' kind of a strange middle ground. And i think the "3d pop" is kind of missing and it slow und close focus is bad for a wide angle . BUT its still the lens that I use the most. For me my x-t3 is my "fun" camera that isn't supposed to feel like work. The form factor of the 27 makes it easy to carry my camera and use it more. That to me is way more valuable. This, the 16mm f 2.8 and the canon fd 50 1.4 are in my bag most of the time. (sometimes the viltrox speedbooster + smct 50 f1.4)

    • @gunairy
      @gunairy 2 місяці тому

      Sounds like a good kit! Yeah I hear that a lot. Any flaw you can find with the 27 is balanced out by how tiny it is. At least to some degree. I do agree that the focal length can feel a bit flat if it’s used a ton though. I’ve been having good luck with the 50mm length lately.

  • @stevegodsell
    @stevegodsell 2 місяці тому

    Great vid. Grew up with a 50mm on a film camera, but that was before iPhones. Now 24mm, 28mm & 35mm is what many grow up with and favour. It’s what you are prepared to discipline yourself to explore, and look at in a different way. Now it’s a 35mm & a 50mm which go with me everywhere.

    • @gunairy
      @gunairy 2 місяці тому

      Thank you! That's such an interesting point because you're 100% right, phone cameras are almost always wider. I was definitely taking photos on my phone before I picked up a professional camera. Maybe that's why longer lengths are a little more difficult to wrap my head around! I also think it's partly to do with movies and TV shows using wider lenses with the most common, I think, being 28mm.

      It would be the ILC equivalent of a leaf shutter: silent with minimal shake (but without a typical electronic shutter egregious banding and rolling shutter issues) and easier flash sync speed. This and IBIS would be a dream combo on a camera designed for documentary and street photography.

    I need the right tool for the situation. I have a ThinkTank Airport Essentials for when I need the full load out, a Tenba Fulton 14 which is half camera storage, half roll top backpack (great for day hikes), and a Tenba BYOB camera cube to put in my Aer Go Pack (great for walking around cities). I also have a ThinkTank Retrospective which is a more classic sling/messenger style like this Bellroy. Bellroy makes good sling bags but I've never used that camera specific one. It's worth acknowledging that your camera gear is tiny which makes it easier to use smaller bags.

    • @gunairy
      @gunairy 2 місяці тому

      I’m glad you found the tools that work for you! It’s always going to be subjective for every photographer to some degree. My gear is tiny, which is why I showed it to be transparent about what I’m packing, but it’s not THAT tiny. I used to use the Wandrd prvke 21L, and what I have now would push the limits of that camera cube.

    You may have found out after this video, but you don't have to scroll through all the modes to switch between still image and movie. When on still image, you just have to scroll one step up and you're in movie mode and down one step when you want to switch back to still image.

    • @gunairy
      @gunairy 2 місяці тому

      That’s a good tip! Yeah I still hate having to go into a menu at all vs. shooting on the T5 where you just flip the switch over to video, but of course the Pro cameras aren’t designed to be hybrid cameras at all, so it makes sense they wouldn’t have a movie switch like the T and XH bodies

    Although I personally didn’t like using a sling, I agree with the whole backpack instead of camera bag thing. I take one of the cubes from my McKinnon camera bag and put in a $25 Volcom backpack for everyday use. I love it and it’s very comfortable. I only use the camera bag when I’m on a paid shoot and need a ton of extra gear.

      I can see that being a potential problem too. Are you packing it pretty full? I try to keep it to just a camera and a spare lens so that it’s not a lot of weight all day long. It’s tough to find the perfect solution, but I wish you luck with your backpack hunt!

    Great video. Very chill. I definitely feel similarly about camera bags. Like yeah they’re full of neat features a lot of the time but I carry other stuff too! Gotta put my documents somewhere

      I appreciate it! There are so many established companies out there making awesome backpacks- Maybe we’ll see some of them get into the camera backpack world and get a fresh perspective on the way they’ve been designed so far.

    Thank you for the review! Are the straps comfortable since they are pretty slim? Do you have issues with the strap of the backpack shown in this video? ua-cam.com/video/MTVFlCY6nXQ/v-deo.htmlsi=ejVL7zFrOViYulgz

    If it’s coming from someone living out of a suitcase/backpack I think you definitely have enough background to be talking about this and is definitely a great pov!!

    This video is perfect timing for me, and extremely well articulated. I have recently been struggling with my inability to try and capture something unique, and each time I try to convince myself that it is likely just too damn difficult, or, it could take a long time to achieve. There’s millions of photographers around the world, who are we to think that we’ll create something unique each and every time we’re out there?! Appreciate the work you put into this.

      I’m happy to hear it came at the right time for you and happened to resonate! That’s exactly what I’m going for with videos like these. I think we need to connect and compare notes as artists now more than ever before, and so I hope videos like these can say, “Hey, here’s what I’ve been thinking lately, how about you?” and touch base with other artists. But I think it’s all about mindset! Are we failing to create something unique, or just channeling all the work we’ve been inspired by leading up to this point? I think we all need a reminder to reframe our thinking once in a while!
