    Had the original Nik software years ago, it has always been a great package, gone through a few different companies. Obviously the program is being constantly upgraded now its in the DXO stable. Another one I love is the neutral density filter!

    Not sure if you find a answer to this. To share some of my comment on this for you and those who might have same question, though it is a two years old video already. It could be blocked by AF signal & image processing, (used to be called “dark time”), even though you switch to manual focus. Different camera would have different dark time. On my Z7, Zfc, D5300, it is about 1.5 secs. On my Z800, it is about 2-3 secs. If you use live view to reduce flicker, it will be more longer. Another 2-3 secs must be added. For example, you set 10 seconds of interval, and set exposure to 8 seconds, there will be 2 seconds for camera to process/save image, display review, send AF signal, next shutter release signal. For some camera, it is too short to do that. So as you said, the camera is not able to register new camera setting during those 2 seconds. More worst, it would skip next image. Solution is to do some hack on shutter release cable. Solder AF & Shuter release signal wires together. In my experience, the interval could be reduced to 0.5 seconds with such modified cable. For more information, you can check out “lrtimelapse pro timer”. There is even a free diy model. Lots of more detail information on Gunther’s web pages. Hope this helps.

    Solution: You dont need to change the exposure manually in preview in between of the exposures. Instead run your timelapse in "P" Mode. Here the camera changes the exposure time automatically depending on conditions. (Set up ISO to automatic Mode).

    This has been an issue forever and gopro still won't do a simple update to make it so we don't have to do this every time it is connected. The gopro 7 doesn't have this annoying feature. I find I have to crop it out in OBS to prevent using the mode button every time. When using a switcher, the HDMI disconnects every time you switch and then the osd returns. I have 3 gopro 8 and I still can't find anything positive to say about them.

    Great post Adam. Very helpful, especially around how to get clean HDMI. I’m still struggling to get good quality to my Mac (M1 Apple silicon). I’m trying to use it strictly as a webcam, and not for live streaming. Did you install the Elgato Game Capture software on your Mac? I have seen some users comment that it ‘helps’ with overall quality. Your GoPro quality looks amazing in your video. I don’t seem to be dropping frames. It’s just that the overall video quality is poor regardless of whether I set the GoPro to 4K or 1080.

    It's the same in Canon R5/R6 and it's documented in the user manual. The camera is blocked for 2 sec for exposure changes. I guess it's a "feature" in mirrorless cameras :) Unfortunately I don't remember how it was in Sony A7III. As You said, the workaround is to use external timer.

      @DJMatthewDunn 2 роки тому

      @@tonead3748 well the one benefit of using this over the GoPro webcam software, is when you use the webcam mode, you're locked out of ALL the cameras manual settings and stuck with 1080p @ 30 with no way to change it. At least with the media mod you get the bump on fps to 60 and regain access to all the cameras manual control settings. Whether or not that's worth the price of a media mod though ... heavily debatable 😅

    I also immediately picked this up on my first atempt to shoot a timelapse with the Z7 II as I also fo0llow the same workflow as you described. Shooting manual and watching the meter. I also agree with you that the raw files on the Z7 II does have a very nice look to them, but other than that, the camera is a major step back in ergonomics and usablity. Personally I think it not just Nikon related but more mirroless related. Way too much emphasis were placed on making mirrorless cameras smaller at the expense of ergonomics. Hopefully and the mirrorless eara age we will see a return of solid design and workflow options.

      The thing to keep in mind is that Nikon's definition of Interval is from the start of one image to the start of the next image. Not the time from the end of one image to the start of the next. You didn't state how long your exposures are, but I'll assume that they were set for longer than 9 seconds. If so, that is why you only get one image because the camera will have "taken all 9 of those images by the time the exposure of the first image ended because you asked it to start the next image 1 second after starting the previous image and it will just count them down one second at a time then stop. See my reply to Terry Kontopoulos elsewhere in the comments where I delve deeper into that and the fact that longer exposures, such as 15 and 30 seconds, are longer than you think they are.

    I feel your pain. Gone from the 850 to the z7. Love the camera. Except the interval timer. I do 45 secs between frames and on the 850 the easiest way to turn off the timer was to turn camera on and off. Z7 seems to turn off at the drop of the hat when making adjustments. Still haven’t worked out why.

    It is NOT only the Z7II or Z6II but I had D850 and now the Z9 and both have a serious problem with the "Interval Timer Shooting" they losing frames if you don't make the interval long enough... For me it is in my star-trails with settings: 30' per frame for ec 500 frames I need to input the interval to 34' (shutter speed + interval) seconds, meaning I have to have 4 seconds minimum gap between frames instead of the 1' second an external controller gives me or even almost no gap in continuous mode and locked controller... Nikon knows about it for many years as very known photographers have asked but never heard... I was hoping with Z9 they will fix it but... Thank you Nikon!!! (?)

    • @Robert-R
      @Robert-R 2 роки тому

      There are two factors that most people aren't aware of when doing Interval Timer Shooting. The first, which based on your comments I believe you're aware of, is that Nikon's definition of 'Interval' is the time from the start of one image to the start of the next image. It is not the time from end of one image to the start of the next. Most people jump into it without reading the user's manual and don't realize this. I have no idea if Canon, Sony, and others operate the same way. The other factor, which hardly anyone is aware of, is that what camera manufacturers list as an exposure time, in many cases is not the actual exposure. As you know, in order to change your exposure by one full stop you need to double or halve your exposure time while ISO and aperture stay the same. The baseline starting point for the exposure scale is 1 second. Start doubling and halving the time from there and you'll quickly find out that they don't line up with the stated exposure durations in the camera. Below I've listed the indicated shutter speed in the camera from 30 seconds to 1/1000th of a second and compared it to the actual shutter speed (which is based on the 1 second baseline). Obviously there are many more exposure options, but I'm limiting this to full stop increments/decrements. Shutter Speed Indicated (secs): 30, 15, 8, 4, 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000 Shutter Speed Actual (secs): 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128, 1/256, 1/512, 1/1024 This has nothing to do with Nikon. All cameras operate the same way in this regard. It has just been an industry standard since at least the 1950s to use the shutter speed scale that we're used to seeing. Why? Human nature. It's easier to say 1/250th or 1/500th of a second than it is to say 1/256th or 1/512th. This is not an issue when dealing with fractions of a second, and mechanical shutters aren't that accurate anyway. But with the advent of digital cameras we've had the options to take ''15" and "30" second exposures. And that's where the problems start. So, your 30 second exposure is actually 32 seconds in duration. Therefore you need to input a minimum interval of 33 secs for the camera to take the total number of images you requested since it needs a little bit of time to recycle and take the next shot. If someone wanted to take a series of one hundred 30 second images and they wanted to have 1 second between images but didn't realize that interval is start-to-start, they will set up their interval timer with 100 images and 1 second interval. When they press start the camera will start counting down the images one per second (the interval) and after one "30" second exposure the camera will have "taken" 32 images. It will then stop after taking only 4 exposures since it will have counted down all 100 of the desired exposures shortly after starting the 4th exposure.

      If you do milky way timelapse you won´t see the additional 4s gap in the film because each frame will be finally 1/25 of a second within the timelapse film. However, here I think is the reson why there is the "exposure smoothing" function at z6II and z7II..

    Appreciate you sharing this. I've seen the FB threads with the criticism, which led me here, but you have tons of support. Yes, I have over processed in the past, but unless I'm going for an art piece, I mostly try to process to the level that the image matches what I saw in person. Of course RAW files are going to be flat and dull, if you were shooting JPEG mode the image put of camera would have already popped a lot more, so showing people who don't know better the RAW files probably misleads them.

    you process according to what you wish to show to yourself and your viewers. Are you documenting? Are you interpreting? As an aside, there was this guy driving around the countryside back in the 1930s' taking pictures for a project. He saw something happening, jumped out and took a picture. The guy was Ansel Adams and the image was 'Moonrise over Hernandez' Check to see how he interpreted the negative and printed over the years. Not much different that what you did on this image.
