Good afternoon, my name is Jhoao Venegas. I am student from Escuela Politécnica Nacional from Quito, Ecuador. I saw this video of your simulation and I was wondering if you could help me with the setup of the CFX ANSYS simulation of the pelton turbine if you can or maybe you can give me some guide to complete my simulation please. Thanks for your time.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! :) I worked on it on and off for about a year between 2016-2017 during my last internship. The animation probably took a solid 8 hours to make since I had never used the Motion Study module in SolidWorks before.

Hello! Thanks for watching my video. Unfortunately, I cannot share the CAD files, as they contain proprietary information. Sorry about that! I would recommend however that you check out grabcad.com - there are lots of great turbine CAD models that you can download!

you used just solidworks?...or also used another video editor?

    • @aggieengineer7913

Hey, alex. I just SolidWorks' Motion Study to set it up and create the video file. No other video editor. First I drew a 3D sketch for the camera path, and then I set up the key frames, transparency effects, etc. Took a long time. Haha

Vorrawit_Foke Hello. I suggest ANSYS CFX or Fluent (this video came from a CFX simulation). I find CFX easier than Fluent to use. Unfortunately, ANSYS is very expensive for commercial users. However, ANSYS provides a non-commercial use only version of their software here www.ansys.com/products/academic/ansys-student for students and academics. If you want to learn how to use ANSYS products, I suggest you download it there and try out some of their tutorials. As for more affordable options for CFD, unfortunately we don't have any CFD software at my workplace either. However recently we've been considering getting a SolidWorks Flow Simulation license. I've used Flow Simulation before and it's okay (not as good as ANSYS). It can handle rotating fluid domains and transient simulations, however, it can't do multiphase flow, which is the type of simulation you see in this video (air and water being the two phases, obviously). Flow Simulation also cannot do deforming meshes. But otherwise for simple simulations SolidWorks Flow Simulation might be a more affordable option for your workplace, especially if you already use SolidWorks.

Vorrawit_Foke Hello. See my comment on my other video regarding ANSYS or SolidWorks Flow Simulation for your workplace. To make a rotating domain between two fluid regions in ANSYS first you need to model the regions as two separate bodies. Then it's as simple as selecting the two faces of each body that will be rotating relative to one another, specifying the pitch ratio at the interface of the two domains (an interface being where there's heat/mass transfer), and specifying the angular speed of the rotating body and the axis of rotation in CFX (or Fluent).
