Jerry Garcia's Rip-Snortin' Cocaine Interview
Переглядів 57 тис.Рік тому
I extracted this audio from an informal pre-show backstage interview from the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon, October 2, 1977. I don't think it's a coincidence they opened the show with "Casey Jones." Why did Jerry Garcia go to Disney World? Because he heard the lines were long.
Jerry the king
Sad to hear such a big-hearted genius sealing his own doom by carelessly using deadly drugs here. And the giggling flatterers both enabling and feeding off him. Yech.
Even though it's not funny, my laughter increased with every line sucked.
Just listening to this makes my bowels move... Natural laxative
Boycott cocaine!
I'd like jordan spieth to build the world a home. And furnish it with turtle doves. Grow dank bud weed pollinated by honey bees.and snow white turtle doves. Spieth would like to teach the world to swing in three part harmony. Spieth wants to baptise john the baptist in his arms in front of some hippies company. Spieth would like the world for once to see Jon rahm baptized by his hand. And hear the laughter roll thru the hills throughout the land.
I like the William S Burroughs interview saying to look in your own house as far as that goes.
They're playing with Marilyn Chambers Ivory Snow Box in the laundry room.
I so loved the tone of that guitar Jerry is holding, i believe he used it thru 77 for sure and i dont know when he began using it??? The earlierst i seen him with it was 74. It sounded so nice its my favorite guitar of his.
Wolf!!
There is NO ONE who can beat Warren Zevon. Even tho he is no longer WITH US ..HE STILL SHINES LIKE THE SUPERSTAR HE WAS, IS, AND SHALL ALWAYS BE. GOD AND LEGEND. HE LIVES *FOREVER* MY GOD OF MUSIC.
It’s sad as fuck. These guys are the type that helped off Jerry. Listen to the coughing, choking and anxious laughs. These guys were a absolute wreck. Keep snorting it tho…
They opened w/ one of the longest Casey jones ever played that night’s shows
can almost feel them plateauing out on stage, high as a kite
Next up..an interview with John Belushi...
And you thought your first girlfriend was a tease.😅 Thanks for sharing. You're a legend! (We lived in Angel Dust central, once we heard this song we'd be off on another three day binge, using every drug between Baltimore and D.C. Good times!) Thanks again. Warren Zevon RIP
That Milli Vanilli joke in the middle killed me 🤣
The incomparable
Easy guy to miss. Always chose to take a song through a more interesting way home.
I'VE DONE PHARMICUTICAL MORPHINE, THE REAL QUAALUDES, LILLY F-40 SECONALS AND THE ONLY PLACE IT ALL GOT ME WAS A 30 YEAR METHADONE ADDICTION - THE METHADONE PROGRAM I'M ON IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF NAZI BITCHES. YEA I HAD SOME WONDERFUL TIMES BUT I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE ELSE. IF I COULD DO IT ALL OVER I'D CERTAINLY DO ALOT OF THINGS DIFFERENTLY!!!
I can't feel my face!!!

I suspect Bill and Bob were the ones hoovering most of the blow. And whoever’s doing that damn weird laugh either bob or Phil maybe? You can hear people sniffing and coughing the whole time Jerry’s talking though he definitely had plenty…good interview if the nasal sounds weren’t overwhelming the dialogue, they’re sniffing that stuff way too hard anyway you want it in your sinus not your lungs😅, noses were probably sore the next morning…the cure? More cocaine!

Just some good old school raw.
This is awesome lol. At this point in time it started being heavily regulated. But in '66 my dad start working at a pharmacy. He had to make the codeine and other meds from scratch. There was a safe where they kept pure cocaine. It was never really that big of a deal. He jokes about how he even had to call the orders in when it was getting low. Lol, with a wink and a nod I know they never kept track of what was there either. So, I'd hazard to guess even in the '70s with the right connections they were not doing something imported. Crazy to think about nowadays...
All those good drugs and about the only thing they managed to play was noodley doodley. With the energy of sloths on ludes.
What an original and wrong take. Some shows were duds, sure, but there are tons of shows where the energy is through the roof and the stage was literally moving. GD fucks hard.
Thank you for letting me know that my opinion is wrong. My 40 + year obsession with music has been informed by your reply. GD sucks hard. It's all relative. 97% of deadheads I've met have been far more interested in drugs and alcohol than music
He was living reds, vitamin c and cocaine...
Miss my dearest Brother Jerry beyond belief!
Jer sounds stuffy? 😂
What show was this before?
Gotta go fast to catch up to them riffs that were droppin at the time and damn did these dudes have riffs
Hmmm... Everyone caught a cold or something???
Chain smoking heaters in between scrapes.
Blastin' lines with Jerry...good times!
Ssssnnnniiiifffff....oh god that's good!....😊😊 I bet they blew at least a teener during that short interview....ssssnnnnniiiiiiffff....(cough... cough)
Someone gagged on that good first drip...,,
They had me at rip snortin
Drivin that train high on cocaine Casey Jones better watch your speed!
Pace of conversation goes into cokerdrive around 2 min mark. Jerry, however does not seem particularly geeked. In fact, he does sound just a bit opiate faded to me. Perhaps there are a couple moments when the white wins out. God bless the man!
God bless him? for what? Doin drugs?
@@SoberHighDrunkfor being a great man.

1:47 ' You wanna scraped out another line'? 😂 😮 😳
If this was too intense, watch the 1974 interview of Keith Richards high on smack to come down.
Ahhh the infamous UA-cam speedball ;)
as much as i love him it hurts to know this is one key to what killed him

Cocaine has done more for our music industry than most executives
nobody knows wtf they're saying here... nice...
Can almost smell the cocaine.
Those were the days when Pablo ran it and it tasted like bubble gum.
And smelled like either!!@@michaelb.42112
Jerry is SOOOO funny.
🤣
Sadly many Jerry interviews have cuts, with him returning with the sniffles. It was part of the man his voracious appetites and the dark emptiness he battled. He was a walking contradiction like many geniuses.
"A walking contradiction" would imply he was a hypocrite, not a genius. If did drugs in secret but openly opposed drugs in his songs (which he did not), then he would be a "walking contradiction."
@@kurtisschilk1218 I’m not sure you are familiar with the term walking contradiction my dood.
Pic up your phone and ask google "What is a walking contradiction".....You're welcome@@brad5392

Great comment. I recently read a lengthy transcript of an old Dan Peek interview. He said that he and the other members of America had been playing together as teens, from 1963, gigging , practicing, and touring right until their success hit full bore ( 1970?)….He said that he was a multimillionaire at age 19, going on 20. Pretty much overnight. Anything he wanted, he could buy, and he had the best of everything. The problem though, for him at least, is he said that because of their newly born fame , they had huge a huge responsibility to tour for their label. He hated the travel, groupies, and the partying. He said that he was miserable being with his band mates and they had to be together 24/7…..practically hated each other most of the time… His escape was drugs….LSD , Hash, quaaludes, amphetamines, alcohol, and LOTS of cocaine. I believe he had over a six year run with his abuse before he got squared away. His biggest point was that it was the most horrible feeling to have everything ( money , fame, possessions) and be emotionally drained, miserable, and addicted, while not enjoying their music in those prime years . Apologies for the lengthy reply, but your comment struck a chord ( no pun intended) and I immediately thought of Peek’s interview about the drugs and conflicts with immense talent as artists.
