The American grid style layout actually predates cars; for example cities like Chicago and NYC had this layout way before the automobile. This layout was pretty efficient to handle foot traffic and allowed rapid development for the exploding populations during the late 1800s. Indexing streets is also easier with this layout. Both these cites also had some sort of tram/subway system during the late 1800's as well. So auto companies certainly did not lobby for this design because they didn't even exist at that point. Also regarding the train system, it actually is huge. HOWEVER, its mainly dedicated to freight. People like to say that auto companies lobbied against railways but even back when they were the main form of transport the railroads would prioritize freight over passengers. They simply made far more money over passenger service. Maybe its different in the UK. Another meme is the American mega highways as a result of more lobbying from the auto industry, which again, is wrong. Eisenhower signed the national highways act in 1956 with the goal of readying the country to move supplies, military equipment and people very quickly due to the cold war. Highways could not cripple supply chains if destroyed the way rail lines could. So whether you liked cars or not they were getting built. The highways just became more convenient for the average person. It also helps to factor in that driving 3 hours in one direction in the UK and you'd be by the ocean, for many American states you wouldn't be close to the next state over. A lot of early towns were very spread out before the advent of the car and to "fill in" the gaps between areas it was far easier to make auto-centric infrastructure along the distance between them. You see a lot of smaller midwestern cities rely on car centricity this way moreso than places like NYC or Boston.

Well, I'll say, if you're playing on a world with terrain and not superflat or something, your roads will definitely be more random, that's for sure!

The "highway" is really just a big boulevard, however, it may still be classified as a highway of sorts like a US route or a state route, even if the speed limit was only 30 or 35 miles an hour or 50 kilometres. Kind of like how US Route 60 goes down to 25 miles an hour near a college campus and then goes to 35 and then to 45, 50, and then 55.

however, you do notice buildings built by companies look basically identical, it just varies on who builds it. use this wisely in your cities, get builders!
