    Hello Professor Alex, I learned about the concept of sociological imagination, which really stood out to me. This perspective helped me understand that my individual challenges are often linked to broader societal issues, such as economic conditions or cultural norms. I feel like I can better analyze my own life and the world around me, making me more aware of the complexities of social interactions and structures.

    One thing I learned was Qualitative Sociology and Quantitative Sociology. Quantitative Sociology focuses on statistical methods and researchers will analyze the data to see if they can uncover the patterns of human behaviors. Qualitative Sociology focuses on understanding human behavior through interviews, focus groups and even analyzing of sources.

    Good Night Professor Alex, A very interesting take away I learned from this video is how W.E.B. Dubois contributed to the introduction of statistics to the U.S. I already had a little background knowledge about Du Bois' contribution to Black activism and the founding of the NAACP. However, I never knew about how he created statistic charts from scratch about institutional racism. I would also like to learn more about this if you have any links to articles or his data charts. -Daniel Alleyne (LD03)

    Hi Professor Alex, A few interesting facts I learned from this chapter are: - Harriet Martineau was originally from the UK but came to the US and called out the injustice towards women and Black people at the time. - Karl Marx believed that social change occurred as a result of social conflict. Conflicts lead to conversations, which ultimately lead to change. - Herbert Spencer is known for social Darwinism, which is the belief that the strong should have more power and wealth than the weak. Good afternoon Professor Alex, I learned that when conducting research, sociologist need to be very specific in defining the steps they do to measure the topic they are researching because they can't just say groups and leave it like that. They need to specify what types of groups or crowds. Tania Sanchez (LDO3)

  • @taniisanchezz
    @taniisanchezz День тому

    Good afternoon Professor Alex, I learned that Harriet Martineau came from the UK and called out the U.S for their sexism and racism. Emile Durkheim was the first that thought sociology was worthy of its own field George Herbed Mead focused on the development of the self. How we perceived ourselves in different contexts. How we see ourselves and others. How we behave in different social settings. The idea that our identity arises from the process of interactions and communications with others is really valid. I say this because thinking about, in my opinion, if we were in different environments then we would think and act differently. It would all depend on our interactions. The people we are around. They usually have an influence on what we think and how we behave. - Tania Sanchez (LDO3)

    • @ProfAlex13
      @ProfAlex13 День тому

      Tania, you are exactly right! Symbols are contextual: based on setting, environment, time period, and who is perceiving you. For example, a lot of cultures use the middle finger, but some cultures have other symbols/gestures that mean the same thing. We also often use symbols to project information about ourselves non-verbally. For example, if you like anime, you may have shirts or stickers that depict your favorite characters... then, when you are in class, it can help you find friends or people who are interested in the same thing. Another example is wearing a cross necklace, which symbolizes that you believe in God and helps people of the same religion identify you without having to straight up say "hi yes I'm Christian, what are you?" However, to take it deeper... symbols and what they mean change over time. Something that was once politically correct may become offensive, and vice versa. In terms of the wearing a cross example, this symbol USED to indicate that you are religious. However, now, people wear crosses simply as fashion. Regarding your comment about how in different contexts we act differently, this is the concept of "dramaturgy" which essentially means that we are always acting. The way you act with your parents is different than how you act with friends which is different than you would act in class which is different than how you act at work... The way we act and portray ourselves is backed by the idea of symbolic interactionism, and that we learn and absorb (socialization) different norms and values for different situations. Like you said, we learn and mimic the people we are around; others impact how you act and what you believe. Simultaneously, you are impacting how others act and think.

    • @ProfAlex13
      @ProfAlex13 2 дні тому

      Hi! Correlation isn't exactly a type of research... when we do research, we are looking for a correlation or a causal link between variables (or subjects of interest.) If we find a correlation, that means that the variables are connected, but we don't know which variable effects the other. If we find a causal link, that means that we know which variable impacts or causes change in the other. Both findings are valid, but finding a causal link is typically the ultimate goal.

    Hi Professor Alex, nice video. Can a research topic be based on anything? Are there any limits? - Alannah Williamson (LD03)

    • @ProfAlex13
      @ProfAlex13 2 дні тому

      You can research ANYTHING!! The more creative and unique, the better!! It's just that if you are studying a vulnerable population or touchy subject, you are going to need the right qualifications and permission. For example, if you want to study sex workers, you may need a Ph.D. This can be frustrating, but I feel good knowing that you need to be very educated and informed to approach these topics. This minimizes the harm to the participants. Typically people go into sociology to be able to study these niche subjects. You have more flexibility in sociology regarding what you can cover.

    Hi prof Alex!, A few interesting things that I gained from this lecture is: -Harriet Martineau is a British baddie that stands on business. She called the U.S. out on our racism and sexism! -Out of all the three theories, I enjoyed learning about Karl Marx and conflict theory the most! I agree with the idea that since there are power struggles, conflicts do arise, and out of those conflicts come problem solving/conversations and then change. I think that could be applied to different aspects of our personal lives as well! -Learning about Mead was really fascinating too! He said that, "our identity is developed through our interactions with others" and personally, I can resonate with that because I got some of my personality traits from the people I love and value most. - Kristiana (Kyla) Mateo (section LD10)
