Have you enabled the Windows Subsystem for Linux, Virtual Machine Platform and Hyper-V on "Turn Windows features on or off"? Then restart the machine. Plus make sure Windows updates are up to date :)

Yes you can run some GUI apps, depending on your needs. Check this learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/tutorials/gui-apps

Disable the "Windows Subsystem for Linux" on "Turn Windows features on or off", that should remove the folder :) But be careful to not delete your distros and / or data in them.

late reply but i had the same issue what you have to do is go to the github for wsl and go to releases (i typed in /releases manually in the address bar to get there cause i couldnt find it) then download the msi install it then wsl --update should say the latest version is installed hope this helps :) (copied from another comment)

I would suggest you'd save your programming projects inside the Linux distro, making sure they are always committed to github. If you want to keep them on D drive, try to change the default startingDirectory on Windows Terminal: stackoverflow.com/questions/59057687/how-to-change-default-directory-in-windows-subsystem-for-linux You could also try to move WSL filesystem to D as last resort. ​@@TechWithCosta I was able to solve my issue by using different profile at startup of Terminal (ubuntu which have linux icon instead of ubuntu icon). I also thought of your first suggestion of moving all my programming files to WSL/Ubuntu but since it's not the main OS, I have some trust issues moving all the file. I use it as playground and for small programs. I also have to download and set up my dev environmental from scratch.

I would say, install the IDE on Windows and indeed work remotely on projects stored on Linux via WSL. I use VS Code, and it has an extension to connect automatically to WSL (checkout the following videos). www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/how-to-use-wsl-development-environment-in-product.html#wsl-general

What do you mean? Linux will run inside Windows, so I guess it depends if Windows is compromised.
